3 роки тому

Documentary following six British teens and young adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder as they embark on an incredible journey to the American wilderness for treatment.
During the week-long intensive camp, the group undergo exposure therapy, where they are challenged to confront their greatest fears. The group are challenged physically and mentally as they grapple with the demands of camping in a remote environment while undergoing intensive therapy for their OCD.
First, the group meet each other for the first time in London and bond over their OCD life stories. On arrival in America, there's emotion and anger as the group are launched into their first exposure therapy sessions with the camp leaders.

the problem is this; with OCD and other things, its a perception disorder. voice/body things, thats dysmorphia. the assumed perception between what the person sees and what is actuality is skewed, literally. for me, its not dissimilar from seeing myself in a funhouse mirror constantly. its...difficult to say the least

Oh gosh when Olivia was talking about taking photos of the toilet, it unfortunately reminded me of me. I am not diagnosed or anything, but I am very scared of germs, especially when it comes to my hair because I have so much less control over it. I got scared that my hair touched a mysterious stain, so I would revisit that place I thought my hair touched and redo me walking past it to see if it was possible my hair touched it. If I’m not sure, I might wash my hair where I think it might’ve touched it and I even took a picture of the stain to send to my friend, asking her what she thought it was. I’ve done this not only with my hair, but other parts of my body before and now I try to avoid touching the parts of my body I thought touched something contaminated even though I know I probably didn’t :/

I have aspbergers too and s very mild case of the symmetry type. I've had it all my life but rather than needing everything to be equally left and right, i have my own symmetries that i follow. I can stop myself but if i dont stop myself i do it automatically, and not doing some of them bring me very very very much discomfort. I have some tics too and they are quite liquid, changing slightly over time, as well as getting more frequent when im stressed or sleeping bad. Felt really nice to watch this and remember that i can do things to make it better if it gets too bad. Hope these people the best :)

I first watched this documentary in my high school senior psych class, now 8 years later I still like rewatching it. I have OCD, thankfully not nearly as severe as these cases, but it’s still bothered me badly since I was about 9. I experience intrusive thoughts, but mostly I have what’s called OCD chronic tic disorder. The tics vary and change all the time, when people notice it’s horribly embarrassing and they sometimes cause physical injuries. I’ve never met another person in almost 20 years that also has OCD chronic tic disorder, and I have always felt extremely vulnerable and alone with these demons. I’d love an opportunity like this to meet other people like me; 20-something’s with OCD chronic tic disorder who understand what it’s like to be like this. Hopefully someday.

Late comment. Been diagnosed with OCD and possibly ADHD / ADD. I know what to do to manage my OCD and to cope. The ADD/ADHD does not give me the motivation to combat the OCD...If I had do draw a picture of my daily life, its me sitting in Devil's Chamber, with him staring into my soul. It sounds bizarre, [Intrusive Thought] but I sometimes have thoughts of rather loosing a leg for eg, but instead having a quiet mind... Been doing therapy, am on medication, at this point the medication helps, but I feel I even reached my peak with therapy. Be thankful if you do not have any mental disorders. I hope this does not come of as discouraging in anyway to others struggling with Mental Disorders. The opposite, I try to spread positivity and mental health awareness. Not everyone understands mental struggles. 💚

@@sgttdghhj3612 interesting! I didn't think about that! exposure and response therapy has been proven to be most effective now but when this show first came out in 2013 I think it was pretty radical. Also I looked up what happened to the people after the show and all of them got better and better. : ) The guy who couldn't touch people's hands I forgot his name actually ended up on a game show several years later. When his team got an answer right he high-fived his teammate with no problem, no hesitation I was so proud of him!

@whitney that's amazing to hear! Thankyou for the update, impressive investigating skills! Mental health care is still underfunded in the UK but I think it's slowly getting better as people become more aware of the issues, and so more treatments get tested, sanctioned and become available. It's not perfect but it's free, not sure I could afford to do a treatment like those patients without going on TV or it being available on the NHS.

Our Mental health system is broken. People are dying every day. For CAMS the under 18s mental health service you are looking at 18 month waiting list, minimum. Adults worse. We are fighting for emergency beds too section people for their safety. It's an epidemic.

@SilenceYouBeast 3 роки тому
That might help with some types of OCD but not others. If you’ve ever worn those things for significant time your hands sweat and they stink of rubber (I use them to do my cleaning with!) Also when it comes to touching food they’re still going to have all the same germ exposure as your regular hands, so you’d need to change them every time you eat food that requires touch. There might also be a cost implication as you could end up going through rather a lot.
@WhitneyDahlin

@@c_farther5208 I wouldn't say he hates the world around him. More he's afraid of it. And now everyone is wearing medical masks and washing hands and wearing gloves everytime they're out in public. Everyone is just as afraid as he is. Well like half of the population is. It doesn't even matter at this point whether the virus ever goes away or not. That's not the point. The point is the masks are here to stay just like how in Asia they've been wearing masks for years every time they leave the house. And that's how it's going to be in America. it's just become a part of American culture. Stores won't let you in without a mask even if you can prove you've had the vaccine. Even if there are no mask laws the stores and companies themselves decide. The masks are here to stay whether we like them or not.

@@africanindiaspo2895 No, I'm asking you to stop claiming religion is going to cure anyone. Because it won't. That's super reductive and trivializing of our suffering. Sure it's fine to offer to pray for someone, fine to suggest religion may help a person feel less stressed...but lying and saying religion is a "cure" is unhelpful. Also..not everyone believes in the same religion. I myself suffer from OCD, and most mentally ill/neurodivergent people are so sick of people going "Oh you just need to believe and pray to Jesus, he'll cure you! Just use essential oils! Just workout more, eat healthier, do yoga, try this fad diet! Then you'll be fixed!" we hear the same things over and over all the time....and more often than not..we've already tried these things.

@@minnieJesusfreak thank you for your comment but could you please elaborate which part of my comments was untrue. I said Jesus CAN heal and I said many conditions are down to spiritual issues. If I have suggested otherwise please point it out to me. I’m glad you are having therapy to cure OCD. It’s good to take any steps we can to get professional help. But, at the same time I encourage you to consider the source of this OCD. Normally it’s linked to traumatic events and that’s when the devils agents take hold of our minds and bodies. As you continue to pursue therapy I encourage you to listen to the teachings of a man named Derek Prince. They might be helpful to you. As far as Paul is concerned, he said the thorn in the flesh was given to him because of the surpassingly great revelations that he was given, a thorn was given to him to stop him from being proud. My brother/sister have you been to the third heaven that you need a thorn in the flesh? In Christendom we tend to find a way of rationalising unhelpful beliefs. Why are we not also raising the dead like apostle Paul did, as well as healing all kinds of sick people? I hope you understand my heart. I am only seeking to encourage you to expect more from your Heavenly Father who loves you so much. Why did Jesus give the gift of healing to the church, through the Holy Spirit? He said if the elders anoint a person with a need with oil the prayer of faith will make them whole.
