In this openhab 2 Basics video, I show you a complete step-by-step guide to installing openhabian on a Raspberry Pi, including configuration of the openHAB home automation system, installing MQTT, frontail logviewer, and using a USB drive to run openHAB for better reliability. I also go over the different user interfaces (UIs) including Basic UI and Paper UI, using the log viewer to filter out error and warning messages, and how to get started with openHAB by using the Demo configuration.
In this new series, I'll take you through the entire process from starting up with openHAB, to developing advanced rules and home automation functionality. Keep an eye out for future videos and subscribe to my channel!

Guide to installing using WIFI. You will need a text editor. (notepad++ is a free, as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") Pause the video at 2:36 1 Unplug SD card and insert again. You computer should be able to access content on the card now. All the file you will be working with are located in the root of the SD card. 2 Edit first the file: firstboot.sh Scroll down to about line 44, make the text look like that. (The 2 bottom line has been added.) Save the file and exit. elif grep -q "openHABian" /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf; then echo "$(timestamp) [openHABian] Setting up Wi-Fi connection... OK" rfkill unblock wifi ifconfig wlan0 up 3 Edit file: openhabian.conf Scroll down to the bottom of the file. Fill in between the quotation marks your name of wifi network and password. Save the file and exit. (The line looks like that): wifi_ssid=”name” wifi_psk="password" 4. Create a new file named: Wpa_supplicant.conf Fill in the text below. Change the ssid “name” and and psk “password” to the same one as you used before. Save the file and exit. country=us update_config=1 ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant network={ ssid=“name” psk=“password” key_mgmt=WPA-PSK } 5. Un-pause the video and follow the rest of the instruction.

Note: Only step #3, setting the wifi ssid and password, was necessary using openhabian-1.5.

Alternatively, after you go into the Config, 5:30, go into "30 System Settings" and "36 Wifi Setup"

This is the best openhab installation on youtube. I have seen all of the video in this series and there are in top. You are good to explain and easy to follow. One thing that would be nice is, if you could add a link to next and previous video in the description.

BK, thank you for this. Can't wait to see all your related content and more! Hot tip for any newcomers running a Linux/Unbuntu instance: you will need to enable the Universe Repository (add-apt-repository universe) to avoid errors with optional components. It took me a bit of time to figure that one out :). If you have any experience with NodeRED, I would love to see a video put together on that as well.

Great guide. I do have a few questions related to hardware. I was thinking of installing OpenHab in a Docker on my NAS but it looks to me like Openhabian is the way to go for newbies? I assume a 32GB SD and USB is more then enough to run OpenHab? Beside the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ you link to, is there any reason to get a case with a fan or will the heatsinks be enough? A video on integrating zigbee and Z Wave equipment would be nice, do you have any recommendations a combo USB stick. I'm trying to get away from Smartthings but would like to be able to re-use my door sensors, multi sensor, and wall plug. I also have GE wall switches for my outside lights. Last but not least, I can't find a binding for my Meross garage door opener, looks like I might have to use a MyQ? Thanks,

I love your series by the way. Is it also possible to connect eltako (enocean) components or do i need an enocean element for the raspberry pi?

I don't use Enocean or have any experience with it, but according to this post on openHAB forums, it is a supported binding: community.openhab.org/t/openhab2-and-enocean-binding/16217 (It does look like you'll need an Enocean reader/stick for your Raspberry Pi in order to communicate with those devices).

Do you have a listing of what order to watch your videos? I have been stumbling around for 4 days trying to get this server working. I finally got something working but for some reason when you show editing the various files through Visual Studio Code, I can't save the files back to the Pi. It says I don't have privileges or something. I managed to hack some switches together using nano. How painful!! Your first video was great. I didn't even know you have to leave the sd card in to make it work until I found it wouldn't boot. I know nothing about the Pi!! I'm looking forward to more of your videos. Very straightforward and educational!! Great work. Thank you.
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
+John Frankforther - Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!! I created a playlist for all my openHAB videos (ukposts.info/slow/PLH-d6dcsARGPnXoLnArHDCkOgwfVBDPWd) and adjusted the order to flow from initial installation to more complex programming. There are still a lot of videos missing from the list, and the one I'm editing now (Things & Bindings) and future "Basics" videos will fall right in the middle of that list. I'm hoping to create a full "course" of videos for people to become familiar with openHAB and hit the ground running. I know I had the same issues you did when I started (and I learned how to work with Raspberry Pis because of openHAB myself!). For the editing permissions issue in VSCode you're having, try the following steps: 1. Connect to your openhabianpi via ssh, and type in "openhabian-config" and the password 2. Scroll to "Apply Improvements" in the menu 3. Select "Fix Permissions" and hit Enter. After that, your VSCode should allow you to edit & save files directly on the pi. Did you follow my instructions to map the openhab-conf directory as a drive in Windows? That will definitely make dealing with configuration/binding/etc files easier!

Nice video. Very well done. Just a data point that I've followed your instructions, however when I go to 'Basic UI', I get a pseudo-error page saying that I haven't defined any sitemaps yet. I'm not sure what's going on, but I'll investigate, and if I figure it out, I'll let you know. Cheers.
@wombat9999
@wombat9999 5 років тому
Well, I tried several things, and the only thing that seemed to work was modifying /etc/openhab2/services/addons.cfg and look for the line that says: #package = minimal Modify this line to look like the following (or just add the following line) : package = demo I did read somewhere that if *something* changes (I don't recall what), it could override the above change. So, I'm not sure this will work in the end -- if it doesn't, then I'll just reinstall everything. Cheers.
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
@Wombat999 - just follow the rest of my videos in the Basics series, and the error will sort itself out ;) I did suggest using the demo package just to get a sample sitemap installed, but in the Sitemaps & UIs video, I describe how to create your own. Then, you'll no longer get that warning message.

Hi there. Great video. Just one question (for now!): can all the steps be followed in this video for a RPi model 3? Thanks Dan
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
+Daniel Watson - Thank you for watching! And yes, it's absolutely the same for RPI3. In fact, I'm running my "production" openHAB system on an RPI3 after following the same procedure. The only difference is, it's possible to have the RPI 3 boot directly off the USB drive (i.e. skip the SD card altogether), but it takes a bit of configuration to do that (not really worth it, in my opinion).
@banier1

Cool! If you want to follow along, check your router for the IP address it assigned to the RPI, type it into your browser, and you should see a webpage showing you the installation progress (you can also do this by SSH/Putty) ;)

Hi there, thanks for the video and the guidance! But I have a question for the connecting Ethernet part. Can I connect the Ethernet cable to PI and my laptop and wait for 3 hours? Secondly, when will I know openHabian is fully installed, is there any sign showing it is fully installed? Thirdly, I am a Linux user(newbie), what should I type to log in openhabianpi? Sorry I am completely new to IT things and wish to pursue IT path and thanks!
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
+Beng Chee Leow - no - you have to connect the ethernet cable on the pi to your router so it can access the internet and download the necessary packages for installation. Now, for finding out when it's done - you can find out the IP address your router assigned to it as soon as it boots up, and use the IP address to access the openhabian webpage (192.168.1.10 for example). The webpage should tell you where in the installation process you are. And, the installation shouldn't actually take 3 hours (I was just being careful so people don't restart it too soon). To login to a bare/new system, type in openhabian for the user name and the same openhabian for the password. Good luck!

You recommend using a USB flash drive to put the root partition onto due to potential failures of SD cards. What makes a USB drive more resilient than an SD card? Aren't both basically the same kind of flash memory?
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
@Michael Ingraham - They're both flash - yes, but SD cards are generally built for speed (think high-megapixel cameras), while USB flash drives are built for storage and I/O (moving files between PCs, liveCDs, etc..). They're slower speed, but are more suitable for the "thrashing" of I/O that an OS root file system requires. Ideally, you'd want an SSD drive (e.g. amzn.to/2QeBKcy), but they're pricey and too big for what we need, and I've had really good luck with these Sandisk 32GB Cruzer drives (amzn.to/2Dg4OgX)

I'm just wondering if booting from SD card and having all the root files on a USB stick is better than using booting directly from USB. This feature is available from RPi 3 and up. Did you test it. In this case you would not need any SD card for your RPi which makes the setup cheaper and maybe more reliable. What do you think?
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
Excellent suggestion! I didn't think to mention it, since I was using a Raspbery Pi 2 in this video (which doesn't support the USB boot), but like you said - for Raspberry Pi 3 and newer, you can just use the USB stick and boot directly off of it. Saves you a bit of money, as well as an extra step in the installation procedure. It might even be slightly faster, I think. Thank you for watching/commenting!

@mausie1967 - that is not an issue at all - it's just a warning that pops up if you run your SSH (PuTtY) shell in a smaller window. All you have to do to get rid of it is maximize the SSH window before you type in "openhabian-config" and you won't see the warning anymore.

What else do you plan on doing in the series? Also the recommended wait time is 45mins not 3 hours
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
Aaron Sharp - I wanted to create a series that bridges that gap where people install openHAB and then don't know how to continue (I experienced this myself at first, but using the Demo setup helped me slowly get started on my own configuration). There's a lot of ways to get openHAB to work, but there are some that help keep the configuration more "standard" and supportable (e.g. using text files for configuration vs REST API). The series will be open-ended, but next, I'm planning to: -Describe the different openHAB control concepts (Things, Channels, Bindings, Items, Sitemaps, ...) -Explain how to work with configuration files (using VSCode and the Samba share) -Installing bindings and getting first items set up/controlled via the different UIs -Getting started with rules -.... Of course, I'm open to ideas and suggestions :) As for the recommended install time, 45 minutes is usually what it takes, but it is dependent on the internet connection and other factors (e.g. apt-upgrade depending on how old the image is will have more packages to download). There are a lot of posts on the OH community forums from people who were too impatient and restarted their RPI before the installation completed, which is why I just suggested to leave it alone for 3+ hours (I just left mine overnight). There's also a new'ish feature where you can SSH into the Pi as soon as the openhabian setup starts, and monitor the setup that way (which will also let you know as soon as it's finished) but I didn't want to get complicated. Thanks for watching!

@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
I thought I recognized the name :) Welcome to the channel! I definitely will be making a video on Grafana and InfluxDB - as soon as I have time to learn about them myself (for now, I'm still using the default charts in openHAB, but I would love to have the pretty graphical representation and filtering Grafana provides). Also noted on the Habpanel widgets - though Dave Cabañero's blog (smarthomeblog.net) already has a great article on Habpanel in general and also about creating widgets. There's just a lot of CSS and Javascript to cover in doing a video on that topic (and I'm not an expert in those ;)). As for backups, I haven't found a need for a dedicated backup solution. If you check out my openHab 2.3 Upgrade video (the one published before this video), I mention how I back up my entire configuration by just zipping up the openhab-conf folder (through the Samba share). I also do that before anytime I touch the configuration. That way, I always have the last known good working config saved away in case something happens. And, because all my configuration is in text files, I don't have to worry about databases going corrupt, or transferring data between different instances of openHAB. If my Raspberry Pi breaks today, I can follow the procedure I showed in this video, then copy/unzip my configuration, and be back up and running within a couple hours...

I watched (and commented) on that video! While I think it's a good idea to image your SD card (& USB drive if you follow my installation process) once you get everything set up/configured, I think it's overkill to do it that often. Like I said, I just copy all of the configuration files off the Samba share before I edit anything. At worst, I'll lose the few OS updates since initial install/backup, but really, with openhabian, the restore procedure becomes: 1. Run openhabian (as in this video) 2. Copy the backup configs and unzip to the configuration folder.

@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
Your openhabianpi should have shares exposed on your network (go to \\openhabianpi\ in your windows explorer to see them). The configuration files for Demo mode are going to be in the openhab-conf folder, under the "items" and "sitemaps" folders. You can edit those files to get the automation system to look like yours (room names, configuration, etc.), or - if you already have your own config files - copy them over the existing files in that folder.

I am having trouble getting this to work. After I use etcher to burn my image, I insert the micro sd card into my raspberry pi 3b and plug in the ethernet cable, I then power it on and let it go. After about 20 minutes I get to a point where it asks me to login, I follow your directions and let it sit overnight. When I get up in the morning, it is still in the same spot. When I go through the next steps of update,upgrade, installing the logger, mosquito and then finally moving my root to usb then rebooting, the system never comes back on line. I can no longer ssh into it. Do you have any insight into what this might be? I could really use the help.
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
Jason Thereien - most likely there was a problem with moving the root file system to the USB drive (since everything up to that point worked fine). It's trying to start up the root file system on the USB drive, but there's nothing there. So, you need to go back to using the SD card root. Follow the description in this post: community.openhab.org/t/raspi-2-move-system-root-to-usb-ssd/15243/22 You'll basically have to put the SD card back into a USB card reader, delete the "/boot/cmdline.txt" file, and rename the "cmdline.txt.sdcard" file to "cmdline.txt" -> this will allow you to start the Raspberry Pi using the SD Card again. At that point, I would type "mount" into SSH and make sure the USB drive (/dev/sda1, most likely) shows up. You can also type in "df" and see if it shows up there. You can try again, or try with a different USB drive. Let me know if this helps!

can I use the same SD card , that I used to setup my raspberry pi ?

Absolutely - as long as you don't think you'll need it again (i.e. when you run Etcher and copy the oopenHABian image onto it, it'll erase the old Raspberry Pi image..

@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
@How To Do It - In order to boot from USB, you have to copy the boot partition as well, but there's other things you need to do with the RPI firmware. The method I describe only copies the root file system, the boot image still stays on the SD card. The point of this is to only use the SD card to load openhabian, and put all the reads/writes that openHAB does on the more reliable USB root file system.
@HowToDoitright
@HowToDoitright 5 років тому
BK Hobby so how do I copy the boot partition? I followed your steps but didn’t work??
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
@How To Do It - again, my guide is NOT for booting from USB - only moving the root file system (I still use the SD card to boot my Pi). If you want to boot your Pi from USB, you have to make a copy of the SD card image (use Etcher for that), and copy that WHOLE image (boot partition and rootfs) onto a USB drive. Then, follow this guide (www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bootmodes/msd.md) to set the firmware options necessary to boot from USB.

Any idea why OpenHAB will not take a password input? I have various times tried to install and after entering the user name “openhabian”, I am prompted to enter a password but then, no matter what I type on the keyboard, no input shows on the screen. I cannot enter Openhab-config because I cannot type any password.
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
@Ricardo Pessoa - this is normal for SSH or any other terminal application - when you type in a password, the cursor will not move, but the password will be entered (it's kind of like the "*" you see when entering passwords on a website). So, just type in the username, hit enter, and *carefully* type in the password, then hit enter again. If you make a mistake, it will just ask you for the password again. Hope this helps!

@@BKHobby I am having the same issue. typing "sudo openhabian-config" in cmd after connecting to OpenHAB "C:\openHAB2 untime\bin\client.bat". The password is just not working. I even tried sudo --user openhabian openhabian-config. Same issue. I am running openHAB on Windows 10 just for testing.

What is the difference between Openhabian and Raspian?
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 5 років тому
+Bram Vanhautte - openhabian is a version of Raspbian, with several important openhab-related improvements, including a dedicated configuration utility (openhabian-config), pre-installed openhab, samba shares set up, easy updates for the tool/openhab, and other things like vi/nano extensions, etc...Best of all, it allows an unattended installation (like shown in the video), where with raspbian, I had about a ~15-step installation procedure to go through when setting up a new Raspberry Pi before I could even start thinking about installing openhab. I *highly* recommend it!! :)

Have you figured out your problem? It looks like the router isn't assigning a proper IP (or it's not connecting to it).

the first thing you DON'T do is move your rootsystem to USB. Your fresh openhabian installation will FAIL!!!!
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 4 роки тому
Did you remove the SD card from the Pi after moving the rootfs? You still need it for the boot process...Either that, or your USB somehow got corrupted during the copy. Try again, it’s worked for years, no reason it should stop. You can also keep the rootfs on the SD card if you want, but expect your OH to fail within a month (lots of log writes). I had two consecutive failures before I did this. Good luck!
@BKHobby
@BKHobby 4 роки тому
I just saw another comment about the "Move to USB" option not working - and there is a known issue in the openHabian Github (recently broken, apparently) - github.com/openhab/openhabian/issues/731 I recommend not doing this for now, until you see that issue resolved on the Github. BTW, are you using RPI v4, by any chance?
