In my opinion he's been the best goal scorer ever since he came in the league not only he's beating all the past legends but he's doing it in a time where goals where hard to get with over sized goalie equipment and goal tenders perfecting the position. Not taking away any of the stuff those top 10 goal scorers did but it was all done during the scoring era where games ended 10-9 most nights goalies standing up 90% of the time and hall of fame tenders had 4.50 average. Ovi is just on another level when it comes to scoring goals. Lemieux with his 990 games and getting 690 goals was the best before Ovi for sure if his career wasn't cut in half he would be the leader in goals and Ovi wouldn't be able to reach it for sure. Lemieux would be in the 900 I'm 90% sure at the rate he was getting goals. As for Ovi he's doing this with loosing 1.5 seasons du to the 2 look-outs thats at least 80 goals he is never getting back for sure. That being said all he needs is 4 more 35-40 goal seasons and he'll be the all time leader for at least the next 30 years, we have no players in the league right now that will even get close to his scoring. If Ovi gets 50 this year all he needs is 5 more seasons of 37 goals and he's done it and thats IF he only get 50, the worse part is he's never scored under 33 goals in a full 82 season so chances are very good only question is will he have the passion to stay another 4 or 5 seasons. Time will tell let's hope to see history in the making.

Ovechkin has already surpassed Gretzky's goal scoring record because the modern era that Ovechkin is playing in needs to be factored in when making the comparison between the 80's & early 90's to that of the modern NHL era (2005 & after). Ovechkin's goal total gets multiplied by a factor of x 1.32 when comparing to the 80's & early 90's NHL era because it is statistically 32% more difficult to score goals in the modern NHL era (2005 & after): 692 goals X 1.32 = 913 goals > Gretzky's 894 goals. Not only that, Ovechkin lost a whole season due to the 2004/05 lockout which he would have scored at least 50 goals, and what's even more amazing is that Ovechkin still has 5 to 6 years of goal scoring left before retiring. It's an undisptued fact, Ovechkin is already the all time greatest top goal scorer in the history of the NHL.

Regardless of whether he catches Gretzky in stats (which I think he's going to), Ovi is the greatest goal scorer of all time. I'm not a fan of cross-generational comparisons but I don't think Gretzky would even be up there if he played in the NHL today.

Alex has NOT had Messier,Anderson,Kurri,Coffey, etc. (incredibly gifted athletes) on his roster ... he truly is a scoring machine, well beyond brilliant !!! ... my wish,with so many of his fans, is for him to touch 900 ... then 1,000 ...
