I gotta say this about the bending power thing. It's not like they have more magical power, it's having a greater mastery of the element through the discipline and its customs and through having a more complete knowledge but your body also matters hence the martial arts part. Or at least that's how it always seemed. Bloodbending isn't really genetic, just some people understand bending more readily.

Iirc since electricity travels between 2 points she might've been able to hold on with only one hand and be okay. That's the biggest strength and weakness of LoK imo. I find Korra to be a compelling and flawed enough character that she can carry an episode on her own. Outside of the Adult cast and Villain's, her immediate entourage just aren't interesting, and it weighs the whole show down. Aang on the other hand, could carry solo but was most fun to watch when he had the support of his friends. Korras friends just don't have that chemistry, and if they do, they don't have it with her and if they did (like her and Bolin) the writers ruined it pretty early on.

I know it's kind of an hindsight thing with the comics, but Toph becoming a cop in light of how ineffecient the rules and regulations of the world post-Ozai have been makes a lot of sense to me. Toph has always been a very pro-action kind of character and seeing that her methods work over the more careful prodding of politics leads perfectly into Toph being down with establishing an authortitative group of action taking lawmen to keep the riff-raff in line. In fact, I think this is why Toph and Aang are so associated with each other in flashbacks, she is the most directly helpful associate to Aang's politics that he had back then.

Additionally, from what I understand it actually doesn't take that much change in blood flow to the brain to knock someone unconscious, but it also doesn't tend to last that long if it goes back to normal.

I think there's something that explains the "bloodbending knockout" and the same thing not being used to kill. A "blood choke" where the carotid artery is blocked from carrying oxygen rich blood to the brain, can knock someone out in about 10-15 seconds but it can be even faster for that and would fit the way bloodbenders knock people out perfectly. But actually killing with a blood choke can take several minutes, it makes sense Yakone wouldn't want to risk the time, plus he'd be like, public enemy #1 in the entire world if he did actually kill everyone there.

So more recently, when i first read the Kyoshi books, i figured Aang resisting Blood bending came from Kyoshi. Some of Kyoshi’s earthbending/immortality training involves being able to inventory and control everything little detail about your body. If all of the past lives put their focus on this while Aang is in the avatar state then even if none of them know how to blood bend, he should still be able to resist. Thoughts on this theory?
@krayzoman

I think it's a combination; Amon is able to resist through self-control like what you're talking about, which is the same internal awareness that allows him to chi-block. Tunnels are simply some industrial transportation networks. Or ventilation shafts (i.e. coal burning process requires a lot of fresh air supply). Or stormwater runway/flood protection drainage. Or any combination of above. Btw, as I recall Republic City was created from the former colony city (forgot the name, there is Avatar comics story about rebellion there, etc) - so it means there was definitely some mining/industrial plants, as well as neccessity for underground shelters. All bending styles have a 1 shot kill/win move. They just dont use them because it’d be uninteresting and boring. Airbenders can bend the air out your lungs/out the whole room. Gyatso and Zaheer; respectively. Firebenders can kill you with lightning. Waterbenders can bloodbend OR just straight up freeze the water in your body. It would create spikes that ruptured your veins. Would be a VERY bloody sight though. Earthbenders could 1) bind you with rock as we see Aang do to Ozai and Toph do yo Ty Lee when taking Bosco the Bear or 2) bend the earth to bury you like that one guy did to Katara in ATLA trying to force Aang into the avatar state. I’m convinced the only reason these moves are not utilized more often is because they would be uninteresting to see. Itd get real boring real fast

15:40 I always took Korra's lucidity, energy, then subsequent crash to be her running purely on adrenaline and fear. Think about it, she has basically never been in a situation this dire before. Adrenaline carries her through the escape, making her clear and focused, then as she escapes the house and sees Amon, the Adrenaline is already starting to wear off a little, and she's feeling a bit wobbly, she's no longer planning and being precise like she was downstairs, so she panics. That attack she did wasn't a thought-out attack like the fire blast and earth wave downstairs, it was her taking the most available weapon (the snow) and just yeeting it at the scary thing, then running away, she's fully in panic mode at this point. As she's running away and starts to feel like she might be actually getting away the adrenaline finally wears off, and her legs get wobbly, she has trouble maintaining concentration, hits the root and absolutely eats it. It honestly felt like one of the most realistic things. I can almost feel what Korra feels throughout that relatively short sequence. The fear being held at bay by insane amounts of adrenaline and the hope of a chance to escape, slowly giving way to that wobbliness in the legs, the pit in the stomach and sudden clamminess of adrenaline receding and panic settling in. I feel like the animation really sold this for me. It also helps to sell Amon to me and how he's affecting Korra. That being said, I didn't like that it knocks her out completely. I think it would have worked better if at the end, she falls over, then gets up again and stumbles a few times, before stopping and needing to sit down while her hands shake (and other panic attack symptoms). She can still be found by Naga, but it gives her a bit more agency if she's not knocked out cold, and really helps to drive the point home about how new Korra is to being in actual danger. She's highly skilled and powerful, but quite inexperienced, and this could have sold that. Still honestly an awesome scene imo.

Aside from very few exceptions (which can be chalked up to the general issues season 2 has) I REALLY love how LoK handles the original Team Avatar. Both in what we directly see and what we can infer from their families. They're no larger than life heroic figures that can do no wrong - no, they're flawed humans who, despite being quite literally at the top of the world, still wrestle with relatable struggles like anyone else. They mess up sometimes, but always for reasons that are relatable or at the very least understandable. Even at this point we can infer that Aang put a lot of importance into his airbender tradition. We can see that both in him being the only one with a pretty much unchanged outfit, as well as how Tenzin turned out, very adamant to stick with the traditional ways, with airbender culture defining his whole life. (Spoiler: Later we learn that this went so far that Aang basically ended up neglecting his other children in order to train his little airbender son.) Toph basically found a way for her character traits to be useful to society as a whole. Keeping order may at first seem antithetical to her character - but as chief of police there is no one to tell her what to do. The only instance above her are the laws of Republic City. (The show made it clear that Lin's replacement answering directly to a council member is a sign of corruption.) And then there's Lin, whose authoritarian personality is the result of Toph's anti-authoritarian parenting, which again is a reaction to her own upbringing - a common pendulum-effect. (Spoiler: We quite literally see that play out with Su later: And then there's that part in season 4. I even largely like the extended family we meet down the road.) Sokka gets full points, no comments. (Spoiler: Zuko from season 3 is still as socially awkward as ever, but with a warm authority that would make Iroh proud.) My only real complaint is that mama bear was barely a character in season 2.

Like he was getting real fancy when he was trying to kill Aang so knocking out everyone in the room and leaving is likely a time saving move. That being said, the only thing I dislike about these bloodbenders is how they can do it psychically. I'm not against very powerful martial skill but just being able to look at someone when all other bending requires physical movement just sucks.

In atla bumi could earth bend with his chin and face. Also bending is not exactly determined by specific movements. It's entirely done in the mind just channeled by physical movements. The only exception is toph's seismic sense where it's supposedly just her feeling vibrations in the ground, but the science on that isn't there. We also have amon in lok resisting blood bending (by blood bending) without any specific movements while tarlok is moving his whole body to bloodbend the equalists. Bending is built up to be something that requires less and less physical movement for the same amount of material movement the more skilled the bender is. This is consistent accross both shows. The most powerful benders are the ones that can generate the most fire, or move the most matter with the least physical exertion. Or the most forceful or controlled movement of matter with the least physical exertion.

@@sebaschan-uwu to be fair bumi did a basic movement to just lift one step. I think blood bending should require a bit more movement

@@thegreatscribbles960 Plus, earth might be "stubborn", but that's a bit of an analogy of being hard and heavy, since actual earth is still lifeless. Bumi using facial moves to move earth is not too out of place since he still moves relatively small sections for the most part and stuff that doesn't fight back per se. Bloodbending however not only feels like "psychic" but there's the fact you are using much less movement to move not only bigger quantities of water but also water from something that technically speaking would try to fight back. (Flowers don't count, they lack typical "willpower" unlike animals and people).

I think the reason they show that Aang used his avatar state to avoid the bloodbending is just to show you that Amon is as powerful as the avatar state or that at least has close enough powers. Thats why he also struggled a bit. At least to me that I wasn't following that the first time I watched the show and didn't remember the fact that a more powerful water bender can basically overpower someone else's bend. But yeah, lovely detail. Also, that scene is awesome, and it is a very good presentation of the villain.

It would've been really cool if they had made it to where Aman wasn't actually a bender, but just a normal person who achieved enlightenment and was able to ignore a lot of the bending rules we've grown accustomed to. This could've been a cool way of hinting at what the world was like before bending like what the Lion Turtle teased at in Airbender. It also would've been a great way to lead in to the more spiritual villains that Korra later faces. Had this series been given a fair chance and given a consistent 3-4 season run I genuinely believe it would've been a lot better than what we got.

Amon being some kind of Anti-Bender would have been really cool. Imagine fire just dissipating if it gets close to him, water losing all it's force, earth crumbling to dust, etc.

Back when this came out I always thought that Amon got his power from The Owl. Made sense, he's the only spirit we know of with personal beef against Humanity and the Avatar. And with the vast stores of knowledge at his disposal, he could know of something akin to energy bending to gift unto mortals. Amon being a Bloodbender is also a really good twist, I'm just disappointed the Owl got a non speaking cameo appearance in season 2.

I formaly disagree with that idea. that would rise much more questions, like, if he was a normal guy with no bending powers, then how did he gain that ability in the first place? what do you mean by 'what the world was like before bending'? like, before the lion turtles gifted bending to humans? cause why would there be an ability to take away something that dosnt yet exist? and for the 'ignore a lot of the bending rules' part, the audence feels cheated out of that enough with this series. if the villan, a regular guy, can just do whatever, whenever, with seamingly no reason, then that wont be as cohesive. if you still belevie in your idea, no hate. are allowed to have opinions, im just sharing what I think

ya I think it would be cool if he was actually given the ability to take someones bending from a spirit just like he says. And it could lead to Korra having to stand up to a spirit and defend benders/humanity to the spirit thats giving Amon his power as the climax. I feel like what I wanted for Korra was more avatar duties and exploring what it means to be the avatar, and less human fights where she stops a world war (because we already saw an avatar do that)

I always read the psychic bending to just be really small precise movements (like the head or hands). Most bending is like fighting where you need bigger moves to direct your (kinetic) energy (like a punch or kick) but this brand of blood bending seems more like when you already have a grip on someone and just shift slightly for a big effect (like a wrist lock or grabbing someone by the throat). It requires you to get a metaphorical hook into someone before you 'twist'

I’m LOVING these Korra episodes! Please continue through seasons 1+2+3 & 4, it would be such a shame to not talk about all the EPIC (and not so epic) things that happen in this show! Air Bender had its lackluster episodes too but that didn’t stop you from covering the series till the end.

After Mako and Korra discover Amon is a bloodbender, they also discuss beating him, saying “he deflects attacks with his mind”. I’ve always understood this as, he uses just a hint of psychic blood bending to screw with his opponents accuracy. I’ve always wondered if Amon showed up to Tarrlok’s house to free Korra in disguise. If he really wanted her, he would’ve had the lieutenant or someone else load Tarrlok, and get Korra himself. Since it was just them two outside, he could’ve used a bit of psychic water bending to trip her feet, and no one would’ve noticed. Even if Korra noticed, the equalists aren’t going to believe her. Also, Amon told Korra he has a plan for her after she challenged him to a duel. So yeah, I think he free’d her to keep that plan.

I wanna give credit to D. B. Sweeney for his portrayal of Aang here. He did a really great job at sounding how an older Aang would sound.
