Paris micro-apartment stacks kitchen, bed, bath in 129 sq ft

When architect Julie Nabucet was asked to fit the rooms of a full-sized apartment in a 129-square-foot (12 m2) flat in the center of Paris (Montorgueil quarter), she stacked functions: she elevated the kitchen and rolled a bed-slash-sofa underneath (pulled out halfway, it's a couch; pulled out fully, it's a bed). To separate the cooking area from the sleeping/living room she used plywood boxes stacked as a wall. The boxes facing the kitchen are used as cabinets; those facing the bedroom are used as bookshelves.
In the two-square-meter bathroom (21-square-feet), she squeezed an "Italian shower" (wet bath). There wasn't enough space for a sink so she placed this outside the bathroom. To separate it from the kitchen she created a wooden netting that gives a sense of isolation, but allows light to pass through.

People who don't live in large cities or people who are older might not like such a small space. But believe me, when you're a desperate uni student with a small budget like I was, having any apartment, irregardless of how small it was, was considered heaven on earth. And this one is far better then others I've seen since it atleast has a decent sized kitchen & bathroom. I knew ppl who only had the room, forget a formal kitchen & private bathroom.

This is fine for a short stint, if you’re staying in the city for an internship or college course or even a halfway house or something. But not as a home. Nobody should ever need to spend their life like this.

After 3 years of living in a similar size small space, I can say that not only is it comfortable, but also comforting. The discipline of living in a small environment, of being efficient with your "stuff", and not having a large area to clean, has been a good experience. I am just building a new larger house (required due to council laws), and just wandering through the half-built house, I am wondering why on earth I need somewhere larger.

I really like the design of this. Having a second level seems to make the space feel bigger, and the whole apartment has a calm, peaceful feeling to it. In college, I lived alone for three years in a room much smaller than this. I only had room for a twin bed, a desk, a mini-fridge, a folding chair and a closet. I had no computer and no TV (the Internet was in its infancy and cell phones didn't exist). I shared a bathroom with several other people, and I had to go into the basement to wash my clothes. I read books constantly, mostly from the library, wrote a lot, met friends at cafes or other places, and spent a lot of time outside. It was basically an introvert's dream and I was very happy. Now I live in a 2,400-square-foot house with a husband and 4 kids and it feels too small! But I could easily live alone in a small space, especially in an interesting city like Paris.

This space could be used much better to create more space. Like a high bed that you can sleep high in and put a bed and table under it. A loft idea. The ceiling is high enough. Bed in the back, kitchen against the wall of the bathroom. Dining area + desk by the window. Decorate it and you have much more space in this small appartment.

In Paris people live outside ??? WRONG ! As a Parisian, I know for fact this is not true. We enjoy having friends at home because because the city is so expensive we can't afford it ( i speak for student and young professional). And the worst part of those tiny flats are their prices ( between 700 and 900 euro - depends on the location, and the fitting) and the tons of documents you have to give if you want to apply to one of them. Eventhough what she did is amazing, living in a flat this tiny makes you crazy.I've been there.

+Christie Janvier I believe that. I've tried living in a 3 bedroom apartment with one roommate and 2 cats, it still drove me crazy.
@eBrigid
@eBrigid 5 років тому
I agree with you Christie--been there, done with that! It is ok for a limited time when very young, you can put up with it for a while but eventually you need an improved lifestyle--a garden, fresh air, a bathtub. There is a reason there are more mental health problems in crowded cities than in communities with more space, privacy, less noise. Noise pollution, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, headaches, body pains from stress, artificial lights, aggravation, irritating neighbors. Human beings need personal space for relaxation and being alone with one's thoughts for some period of time each day. Eventually in life you want to throw dinner parties, you need a dining table, space for guests, and it is nice to have a couch, a full sized bed, a desk to sit and write, another room to go into and close the door, room to dance if you want. But if a person wanted a place like this for the weekends, or to have a pied a terre for some days of the workweek then get out on the weekends, I can see holding on to a space like this. But people are being sold on the idea that micro-living is somehow progress, when it is exploitation in many cases. Landlords will carve out a closet to rent if they can get away with it--people should not be overly convinced that micro-apartments are healthy, or that there is not greed involved, look at London, people trying to rent out a storage room under their stairs as a place to live.

I lived in a similar one with the same size, it was actually really comforting because of its interior (it was a little bit more colorful and welcoming)... Now we live in 54 sq m flat with my husband and it is two big rooms (just the living room is as big as this apartment in this video) so 129 should be at least twice ss big as ours... :)

I lived in Paris. And those tiny room are called "Chambre de Bonne" (housemaid's room) and they are freaking expensive for what they are. Also this one is so fancy and contemporary, they are not showing what most of the "Chambre de Bonne" are really looking. But it's a choice of people preferring living in the center of Paris, in a 10cm2 in the 7th floor without elevator, instead of living around the town in Paris District with bigger volumes and more comfort. They're not to blame..

@@jessicas3359 This one is newly renovated, and, depending on the location (it looks like it's the 2nd arr? So, as central as it gets) it's probably 1000-1100 eur /month. Plus utilities. You can't get a studio of this size in central Paris for less than 800/month. The other big cities in France are more decent. You can get a normal studio (not a box) or a small one-bedroom for 500/month.

Médina Maëva I am one of those people, if given a choice between “a tiny place in central Paris” vs “a regular apartment on the outer edge of Paris,” I’d definitely pick the former. Cheap or expensive-I guess that would be subjective, especially on UKposts where many of the viewers come from areas where one can rent a house the size of a gymnasium for 50 Euros or US$ 55/mo. To them, an apartment that costs 800 Eur should come w/ a maid and a tennis court. Of course, they can’t understand why anybody would live in a micro-apartment.

I love this! So many clever ideas for how to utilise a tiny room.Put aside the issue of people being extorted for rentals in Paris - we're talking about a densely populated area with a lot of demand for living space. People must make their own choices about how they wish to live. Personally I just enjoy the design challenge this apartment represents. It could be useful for student accommodation, where space is competitive and a single person only needs a small space. I like the way the architect has kept the space open, by using the stacked boxes that separate the kitchen from the living/bed area. Thank you for another wonderful video.

Setting aside what I find culturally comfortable. I think the use of space has been ingenious. I've seen several non-european designs that used an adult size trundle bed. One does not have to worry about falling out of bed or off a ladder. I used a trundle bed in my tiny home. The kitchen wall Solutions demonstrated another creative concept. People forget that culture teaches us what is comfortable and what is not. Cultures change. Culture often is used to judge others by. But no culture in the world has absolutely all truth or is perfect for all time. More importantly it should be appropriate for what the need is at the time and adaptive

Es obvio que este tipo de departamentos pequeños es para gente que está sola .pero la idea de que todo este en su lugar y ordenado. Me agrada 😊 Como ex mucama- he limpiado casas enormes.

***** The cities are overpopulated,not the Earth,genius.Mostly because every hillbilly wants to live in the city.There are so many abandoned cities(around 100.000 only in Russia),villages and uninhabited regions in the world that can easily be populated with another few billions people.This overpopulation bullshit is just a propaganda of the elite who wants to control everything,including population growth.

This is really cool! I like how they made use of every bit of space.

I really like Kirsten's videos. It is true that most of us in the U.S. are accustomed to having so much more space, but years ago I visited with a friend who lived in Manhattan. Her studio was not much bigger than this. Many urban areas around the world have dense populations and perhaps the trade-off of being in the city is better for them than living in the outskirts of a town or the city. I do like this studio. I understand other people would modify it.

Really silly to put two sinks next to eachother when you have so little room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@tonyd9455

I was just going to post the same thing! They could have had storage space where the small sink is.

Makes no sense to have 2 sinks that close together. One sink could have served both rooms.

Billys Mum Ikr I was thinking the same thing ... I just watched a couple who converted a bus into a small space home and they use their kitchen sink for both to save a lot of space.

Woah she might have had a hard time designing this, how can her client ask for so much in such a tiny space?? she did magic though

Karina Esqueche She clearly is skilled at using every single dang square inch of space. Obviously not the first apartment she's designed. I wonder if the rude people bashing her have ever lived in a place other than a giant 3-bedroom, 3-car garage house... Clearly some haven't.

I always thought those tiny houses and these micro apartments were a bad idea signs of what's to come .. by that's just me. Apparently we can talk ourselves into anything.

I could see me, by myself living here. Definitely not with another person, the claustrophobia would hit me hard, and I'm not even Claustrophobic.

Love this :) A clever use of space ~ just the essentials without compromising on view and light. Such a delightful reminder, that one need not much in life in order to live well & be happy. Thank you, Kristen ♡ Much love always and a blessed new year's.

I totally understand tiny living and especially tiny houses. Tiny houses are adorable and never feel claustrophobic. But this is another level of tiny living I don’t understand how one does this 😭

I like it. It all depends on what's important to a person. Having had the big house, big condo, big NYC apartment, and now a van, I could definitely get with this. Less cleaning and more cash savings. I found I used very little of my home space; the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. Everything else was fabulous but never used. Lots of rooms looking like beautiful museums that I had to periodically dust. LOL. Because I can now do big travel living, I absolutely love tiny indoor living.

Now country side Ireland... Big city take to much your free time.. Enjoy yourself, don't let system get you down.. Good luck to everyone. Cheers 🍻
