I would have thought it would be important to them to keep in touch with the rescuers, as that momma would have needed to be returned to where she was found. Rehabbed animals are usually returned to their home areas unless there is a reason they need to be relocated. That family is so wonderful, Tommy is wonderful, that vet office needs to be informed on the importance of getting animals back to where they live. I'll bet Tommy was relieved to hear from the family.

Yeah, that policy doesn't make sense to me. The family had legit concern as well as the collateral information to substantiate why they should be looped into the release plans.

Right?!? What is so sad is that Mr. White wanted all of the information received from the family. Had the family not contacted him he would’ve never known. He would not have known she had babies in a nest and a husband waiting on her safe return. Mama would have just been let loose.

It STILL takes away the liability from the video maker and forces YOU to make an extra effort to find the guy, which WOULD be used in court as proof of intent if you had nefarious ideas. It's not my fault if suing and stalking are two of America's favorite National sports. It makes EVERYONE get wary and protective, and it makes a lot of lawyers RICH...

Alot of vets are like that sadly... Really short, curt, and sometimes really rude. In my state, we have a Tier One and its an ER vet clinic, and its like the white-rich person clinic. They will treat you like less than them, charge you ridiculous amounts for treatments, and make you feel like you dont belong there. On 2 instances they were cold hearted to my animals and I couldnt do a damn thing because they needed to get treated.

I know! I was very frustrated by that. I can understand not giving out someone’s contact info, but take the 2min to call the contact and give them the girls #. How hard is that? I wouldn’t want anyone lacking compassion/empathy handling my babies. I was so happy for this ending though! What an amazing family! You are all such incredible people!

As a rehabber, I am ALWAYS happy to share updates. It makes me crazy when other rehabbers and facilities won’t do that. I can understand that it’s hard during “baby season” when you don’t have the necessary help available, but even then, it can be done if you think outside the box. And in the end, the people willing to help critters are ALSO those willing to donate money and supplies and volunteer time, so it only makes sense!

Osprey's, like a lot of birds, mate for life so it was in her best interest to be released back to home territory. So glad this had a happy ending!

welcome to 80% of the human race. if any above-and-beyond energy is expended, it's usually seems to be prompted by negative, inappropriately judgy emotional impetus (towards other individuals) or avarice. i always try to imagine how we might help to change the game... just little steps like calling regional corporate headquarters to leave positive feedback for the especially beneficent people, rather than exclusively reporting complaints that further another type of progression, etc. it would be so cool for the more caring/loving/empathetic individuals to start ruling things :D (i'm aware my comment is wacky. if you don't understand the connection between my comment and the op or if it seems trite, sorry for wasting your time)

It VERY much depends. I can absolutely understand the vet techs defaulting to refusing to give out someone's personal information (ESPECIALLY if there were multiple rehabbers and they didn't know which would take the bird), and would appreciate it if I was rehabbing the bird. A rehabber has NO obligation to play personal relations when they signed up to heal animals, and it drives a lot of people away from volunteering. I would be very upset to receive random calls because I volunteered for a position and they just gave out my number. This rehabber owns a business. Not all do.

This was kind of weird as well because where I live you are able to call rehabbers directly if you know of an animal that is in need so I’m confused. If he’s a registered rehabber by the department of wildlife or agriculture I would think they would at least be able to give you the business name with a number that you could call or email? I mean he had a business Facebook page for Christ sake. That vet is doing a real disservice. I get the intention is good, but no one needs his personal information just his business information.

Whereas the lack of *any* information was a bit untoward, I absolutely understand the need to keep the rehabber's personal information (including contact info) confidential. If I surrender my time and effort to rehab animals, ESPECIALLY something as time intensive as a wild bird, it would be very upsetting to have my personal number or email given to random people. Personally, I wouldn't be okay with taking a random call when I signed up to rehab the bird, not run PR.

What I'm saying is: A) the vet doesn't know where the bird is going to be placed after treatment as soon as they come in (The rescuers themselves had to call multiple public rehab facilities, and there would be multiple private individuals also working in that field) B) Not everyone likes having their contact information handed out to people they've never met C) We watched a less than 5-minute interaction between a vet tech and the people who brought in a very injured bird, and from that people are deciding this vet tech/office are clearly heartless. Which is a hell of a leap. Wildlife vets and rehabbers have privacy rules just like anyone else. I get that people want updates, but it's not your pet.

All they had to do was call the rehabber themselves (who they did know, because they handed the bird off to him) and explain the situation, then give him THEIR number and he could make the choice. So the vets didn't even try to connect the two, even though that NEVER meant handing out his phone number to strangers. Get it?

Maybe the rehabbers don't want their names released so they don't end up with unwanted public attention while they're trying to take care of the birds. They're likely providing their services as volunteers and don't have much time for chit chat.

Oh the family is literally the most caring, pure hearted, ideal family that I have seen on here. I mean ALL of them were crying at various points throughout the video, and the investment they put in to give the ospreys the best life possible is so inspiring and something we should all strive for. I was so invested in the video that I didn't even realize it was nearly 10 minutes long...I swear I could have watched it all day and still want to see more!

That is what we call a "rest assured we'll take care of it" response that is fantastic for avoiding or evading any actual engagement. They need a better veterinary office. Birds, especially, are often an annoyance to non-specialist vets anyway, and being wildlife doesn't help. If the rehab contact they were using was legitimate (i.e., certified, etc.), that person would likely have a significant interest in handling, or at least advising on what to do, with an Osprey family situation involving chicks as needed, not just bringing one of the parent birds back to health for release. Obviously, that turns out to be the case, but with the vet's office seeming to have no involvement in that or comprehension of how best to help.

Yeah.... I just don't know why they didn't care. Like why so cold and just don't care. People are just freaking heartless They just do their job and they don't care like those are the type of people I don't want care for me or my animals. Maybe they do their job well I don't know but if you can't do your job with heart and compassion I don't want you touching us.

It's probably as simple as it sounds, they aren't allowed to hand out personal information on their rehabers. One thing that could've been done or brought up though is forwarding the idea of giving the rehaber the contact information and perhaps a short summary in regards to the family so that he may contact them.

They could have given the family's number to the rehab... I mean, you can't release an animal just in some random place (I've raised and rehab wild birds myself), especially in this case where there's people telling you there's a nest with babies that need to be fed by both parents...

I think it was the rehabber's personal information they wouldn't give out. But yes, it's ridiculous that they can't pass on the Rescuer's contact info to the Rehab place, then they can get in contact if they are willing to do so. Simple!

Rescuing animals is awesome, even if you can't stay together. If you can't keep them forever, you'll love them even more bc you know you only have so much time. I honestly wish I could foster pets and rescue animals, but we have too many pets and I get attached easily. I am very happy for you ;)

I recused a baby finch last spring and rehab of her was just as hard as being a new mom to my own babies. The small bird rescue in my area said she would take her, but finches are hard and with having 100+ birds she probably wouldn't make it. Well I am never one to shy away from a challenge so she stayed in my care the next month. Even after I released her she would come back to me for food until she got the hunting thing down well enough to feed herself sufficiently. My little Florence the Finch❤

OMG I rescued a baby squirrel as well a few months ago. I still get updates from the rehabber and he will be released in the Spring. I named him Wakanda and I can't wait to watch him go wild. The vets and shelters in NYC wanted nothing to do with him since he wasn't a dog or cat. They just wanted me to leave him there over night and he wouldn't have survived. He definitely would've been killed.

Sally, I completely agree!! That was infuriating, and considering the people at the vet have dedicated their lives to taking care of animals, you'd think that they would at least ACT like they care. Agree 100%, and the rehab was obviously public info since they were able to find and call the rehab. It didn't have to be that difficult.

@@mozvidz I've volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center and the way she carried the bird is standard for carrying birds of prey. I was lucky to help grip the legs of a peregrine female and young Cooper's Hawks. That grip (along with gripping the neck) are the best ways to protect yourself from those scary talons and beak 😰 That said, they seemed too "business-centric" and not considerate about the very concerned rescuers.

So wonderful for the osprey family. Also, those who cared enough to want to help her. Thinking Daddy osprey and babies are truly blessed. By all who were involved and their acts of kindness. ♥️

Topping it all off, the momma osprey successfully protected her babies and survived. It's like a Disney movie without the tragedy part.

To be honest, she's lucky she didn't get killed. Eagles can and will kill and eat ospreys, so she was lucky to be spared with minor injuries. It could have been A LOT worse, still, I'm glad she got to go back home to her little ones and her mate, families should never be torn from each other, it really hurts to see such a thing happen.

I volunteer at a wild bird rehabilitation. Often times we have to send birds to other locations (sometimes private homes) to give an animal more specialized care. I’m assuming this gentleman is offering care within his private home. The safety issue is that theft is a real possibility. I would have taken the phone numbers of the ladies who rescued that beautiful girl, and given it to the rehabilitator so he could contact them. I’m just glad this story had a happy ending.

@@misscleo378 First of all, theft is a safety issue for everyone; being a wildlife rehabber doesn't put you at elevated risk. Second, the vet's policy is ludicrous given the family was able to track down the rehabber within a few hours on the internet. Third, the rehabber is clearly unconcerned with the risk of theft since he's on a list of rehabbers, has a Facebook page and uploads/streams video of himself doing his job. He clearly isn't concerned about his "safety". Numerous commenters have suggested an easy work around that the vet refused to consider. The vet displayed a very detached, hostile attitude to the point I question whether they are in the right line of work or not.

This isn't a pet; it's a wild animal -- regardless of how the family feels about them. And while it's admirable that they took action to get the bird help, they were kind of being Karens in their tone with the vet. The vet told them their policy and they kept pushing.

You would think the vet would have understood the need to reunite her with her babies.and her mate and the only way that would have been possible is for the rescuers and the rehab specialist to communicate. It does not make sense. There are no.HIPPA laws for wildlife...

Some people just don't have the heart for critters. I feel they are just as important and have a right to a happy life as humans. We need to do all we can to see they are cared for.

We've helped several hurt animals including a hawk. Most people run over them or drive by them having no regard for life.

In my country, animals are treated less than garbage, so it's very hard to find good vets. I won't own a pet untill I move to a better place...

I have had some bad vet experiences (about 4 or 5). The last one was we were feeding a cat totally rejected by the neighbourhood and I think he had been living outside for years. It was so sad. He would only come in occasionally but was scared. I used to make him beds inside. He got sick and people next door terrified him with fireworks and he had a stroke. I knew I had to have him put down and I needed to be with him. He only trusted me. The vet said no you can't come because he may belong to someone. So I was forced to contact spca and I couldn't go back miles to their base with the guy as I had no way home so I had to cage the poor kitty and they took him away to be put down. I still shed tears over it and was sobbing when they took him away. They put him down fast and my husband and I drove a long way to the city to fetch his body and bury him here with some dignity. (Our place is a pet cemetery)! Stupid vets I could have comforted him at the end. I'm still sad.

I mean, if I sacrifice my time and effort to rehab something as intense as a wild bird, I honestly don't want to be getting multiple unsolicited calls regarding its condition from someone I don't know. It's invasive. If the info is passed on to me and I decide to reach out then fine, but unsolicited contact isn't okay. In this case, the rehabber ran an actual business and was okay with it. That isn't always the case, and I would be very upset if my info was given away to whoever asked by the agency I volunteer for.

@@travismurell5228 I never said it was, I was offering an example of why this policy was in place. After looking through some veterinary law further, the policy only makes more sense. Vets are prohibited from sharing patient information with anyone but the owner of the animal and those the owner gives explicit permission. This animal is wild, the people who rescued it do not own it and therefore are excluded under this law. Such information includes the condition and prognosis of the bird as well as the bird's final disposition. Similarly, it is legally questionable at best to give out the information of those who rescued the bird to anybody, including the rehabber, also because they are not the owner. People keep lambasting these vets for doing their actual job (saving the bird) and protecting the privacy of all parties, which is what they're SUPPOSED to do.

But wild or not, if someone rescues an animal, I think it's cruel to cut them out of the process. Granted, you shouldn't have to give them hourly updates or anything, but I certainly wouldn't be okay with rescuing an animal and being emotionally invested and then basically told "too bad, your part is over, you'll never know what happened to them." That's not okay. The vets should at the very least put the rescuers in contact with the rehabber by passing on their information so that the rehabber can send them an email to let them know what's going on. I don't think anyone's saying it would be okay for a rescuer to call over and over and bother the rehabber but they definitely deserve to be kept in the loop. And, for example, in this case it was important for the rehabber to know that his patient had babies and a mate waiting, and their exact location, so that the bird wasn't just shipped off to god knows where and never reunited with its family. IMO the rehabber should always reach out to the rescuers to just tell them "hey this is what's happening, no need to check in, I'll update you when there's something worth knowing" and let them pass on any relevant information they may have as well. It takes minimal time and can make a world of difference to both the rescuers and the patient.

There are a couple newspapers whose theme is good news only. I stopped watching the news bc of what you said, stories like this one always get pushed aside. It's a shame, there's a lot of good people

They probably euthanize animals every chance they get.

@@yoo350 when they put an animal to death. Sometimes it's done for mercy, so that an animal already dying does not suffer any more. Other times they'll do it just because there are too many animals at the shelter.

Isn't that disappointing? I was so mad and offended. Don't treat caring humans like that!!! I actually feel sorry for the tech who spoke to those nice people like that. It must be so miserable to live like that! I was so impressed with the family, just getting on the phone and calling local rehabbers so they could make the reunion of this MAMA and her BABIES. GEEZ I AM STILL MAD... :D

Absolutely! But unfortunately common sense and an easy answer can be very challenging for those who are so heavily indoctrinated. They can't think for themselves.

I get what you're saying, but bending the rules of HIPAA is a first class ticked to being sued out of existence for any medical professional. There is a reason these laws are in place. If they bend the rules for this, what's to stop them from giving your info to some rando just cuz they asked?

@@JessKalinow As I said, if their privacy rules prevented disclosing the rehab facility’s info, the vet’s office could have at least passed along the contact info for the people who rescued the osprey. And at any rate, this is a vet’s office we are talking about; not a high security psychiatric facility or something. Most vet’s offices would be thrilled to see what these people did.

Even the vets in Australia are like this. It's so frustrating. You just want to know that the animal is OK and gets released where you found it.

It's more about the confidentiality of the carer who had the bird. It is all a bit frustrating though. I have had issues with getting info about birds I have rescued for similar reasons.

All of these rules and protocol’s are in place for a reason. Most of the time they are in place because of an incident. Something happen that forced those procedures in place…it’s nobody’s fault.

They could have at least let the rehaber know about the people who wanted to get in touch with him and let him make the judgement call if he wanted to get in touch with them. Rather than just say "policy" and do nothing.

I've seen far too many vets that care more about maximizing profit than actually caring for animals. This vet wanted to avoid getting cut out and stay as a middleman (even though the rehabber was in a public list of rehabbers).

Many doctors are like that: You have cancer and the most 3 months to live..next.

Whereas the lack of *any* information was a bit untoward, I absolutely understand the need to keep the rehabber's personal information (including contact info) confidential on the vet's part. If I surrender my time and effort to rehab animals, ESPECIALLY something as time intensive as a wild bird, it would be very upsetting to have my personal number or email given to random people. Personally, I wouldn't be okay with taking a random call when I signed up to rehab the bird, not run PR.

@@fevre_dream8542 but the whole thing is so easy to work through. It's "hey the lady who brought the Osprey is so worried about her, she has babies in her nest & has been coming here 10 years. Would you be okay if I was to give them your number so she can have updates?" It's not that difficult. The vet was a jerk and I would love to put them on blast bc you don't deserve business if that's fundamentally how you're going to treat people. Just saying. 🙄

@@fevre_dream8542 Oh c'mon, the family who brought the bird in weren't just some random folks, they're in essence the first line of rescue and deeply invested with this pair of ospreys because they nest mere yards from their home and have been for 10 years. The vet office acted like they were CIA operatives and you sound like you walk with a stick up your behind. If I took care of a wounded bird I'd have no problem with taking a call from these sweet folks and continue on with updates.

Actually... I think she asked where was the babies... I put the quality on high as it goes and zoomed in at the end, there was no babies to be seen and I didn't see her feeding them...

Unfortunately, humans are 98% of the time the cause of the problems and suffering of this world's flora and fauna. Wild and domestic. Humans are most of the time the problem, when we NEED to be the solution! Animals have a deeply ingrained fear of humans that has been passed down for millenia and for good reason!
