I know that Vettel won the championships for four years straight but 11-13 were still filled with good races. 2012 was quite mad but even the first half of 2013 was actually really good and tight. Maybe F1 should look at those regulations and see if they could bring something back from those years. V8 is the obvious one but I think there is more to it than that.

honestly i think the biggest issue with F1 right now isnt Red Bull, its the FOM trying to generate more money from race weekends. It does need money to survive, however sprint races and adding more races that arent amazing to the calendar is just diluting the sport. More is less in my opinion, this was shown when we had the 2020 season and we had some amazing races in a much shorter calendar with the standard format - and mercedes had a similar pace advantage as red bull has now.

I think you're glancing too much at the fact that a predictable domination is the root of the problem. While I agree that sprints dilute the sport, it should be the least of our concern in terms of making the season exciting. I bet if the season is super competitive and the cars are able to follow easily, there would be a massively different perception of the sprints. What we got as the first taste for the sprints is one of the most boring F1 weekends in recent memory, that contributed to the massive hate for the sprints. You see, sprints isn't the main problem and never will. It's a thing to nitpick at worst, and might be very welcomed in the right circumstances. It's competitiveness and on track action that we should be focusing right now.

I could be taking bs, but I think there’s also some additional psychological reasons too. Yes I think that like others have said, going from one unprecedented level of dominance by MB to what will likely be another era of crazy dominance takes the wind out of the sails of the sport, especially coming off the back of 2021. But I also believe that because the community is becoming increasingly toxic among fans and some media, as well as the new and very loud fans coming in, the air and vibe around the sport has changed. Not to mention the way F1 is so aggressively pursuing change in favor of profits such as potentially making a third of the calendar sprint races, getting rid of some practice sessions, etc, again the air feels different around the sport. The community just isn’t as much of a club anymore. Just something I’ve noticed but I could just be nostalgic lol

It feels like they did not really factored in that new regulations can be horribly missed or perfetcly nailed. The cost cap would work very nicely (in fact of fairness and entertainment) if the 3 top teams are relatively equal in performance, or at least two of them - so the rest of the grid can catch up and there would be racing between "top teams". But now the cost cap kind of locks in the current state of performance, so much so that current seasons are being thrown away to ensure a better project for next season. The Cap is still a good measure and it definetly worked, its just that we all expected things to be different and now they arent.
@seventh-hydra
@seventh-hydra Рік тому
It doesn't lock in the current state of performance though. Case in point, Aston Martin's rise. Because of the cost cap, teams can lure talented staff away from dominant teams. Think of it like building a football team, with an all star roster, and then suddenly your budget is cut in half. Well then you can't afford to keep all of those players, and other teams can lure them away. That effect will help other teams and weaken a dominant team in the long run. Using AM as an example, they stole Dan Fallows away from RB and immediately saw a huge boost. Ferrari is also in the process of taking a bunch of aerodynamicists from Red Bull. (But gardening leave, etc)
@Cynycter
@Cynycter Рік тому
Exactly...this stupoid is Cost cap along with the ridiculous restrictions on testing are why RB will remain dominant. No other teams have a chance to catch up.
@alzameista6580
@alzameista6580 Рік тому
@@Cynycter You are missing a few details here. In the short term - yes I would tend to agree with you. though we have seen with Aston Martin its still possible to rise up. But a lot of people forget about the long-term picture. Without the cost cap only the few big teams will be able to compete by throwing money at it, with a cost cap everyone gets more of a chance to lure good personell away from the big teams, which will in turn help them, just as one example. Also, the even bigger problem is the constantly changing regulations, because there will always be teams that mess up or nail it, which will spread the field naturally. Keep the regulations stable for a lot of years, because simply by how innovation will work the succesfull teams will have smaller and smaller benefits with each hour of work aince at some point the optimal solution is found, while the less succesful teams can improve with bigger steps. So keeping regs stable and having the cost cap will level the playing field, you just need to give it time

I think the reason this Red Bull dominance feels different to the Mercedes dominance is that now we know it’s possible. Throughout that era, there was always that feeling of I wonder who will take down Mercedes, but in this era, now that we know streaks of dominance that long and recent are possible, with no signs of anything being different about this situation, it just feels predictable. Also, the fact that the whole intention of the rule changes was to close up the field and get us better racing, yet that’s not been achieved, makes this feel even more hopeless. I acknowledge that Mercedes weren’t held to that standard of “something needs to be done”, but I think you also have to admit that this IS different because there’s a risk of another era of dominance right after the last. There’s nothing inherently worse or more problematic about Red Bull winning so much, it’s just that it contrasts with the concerted effort to get rid of that.

As long as the rules don’t change, you can always hope that others’ll catch up. But with all the short term changes these days, it’s not worth investing in today’s formula. To those who KNOW, the problem has been very clear since last year: the TD39. At the beginning of last season cars were able to follow each other closely and there was a great balance between Ferrari and RB. Then what happened? Because the Mercedes car had porpousing, Wolff adopted the classic German strategy in motorsport "Our car is not competitive so instead of trying to get better we'll force them to change the rules". Because the FIA (and they have clearly proven this in the past 9 years) is Toto's bitch, BOOM they change the rules...because of a single fucking car out of 10 having some really dangerous porpousing (I am not saying that the Mercedes was the only one afflicted by the phenomenon but it was clearly the only one getting a dangerous amount of it). Wanna know the funniest part? In July, so before TD39, the teams had it figured out...porpousing was not that dramatic anymore. Meaning that if they would have had the patience to wait a couple of months more, there would have been no need of having the TD39. That rule change killed the Ferrari project and there we go, this is how we got from a super exciting new era of F1 to an absolutely awful one. Everyone should have the same setup and rely on driver skill and strategy to win races. No car should have an advantage over another. They should test the best design and setup then every team gets that exact setup. No more improvements are allowed for that year. This would also keep everyone in budget. When the year is over they can use the data to make setup changes to improve its aerodynamics, engine, suspension and braking for the following year every team now gets that setup and it's down to the drivers and team to get the most out of that car and come up with the best strategy to win. This would create much closer races and the only advantage a team would have is how skilled their driver is over another. In this current grid if all cars were equal 90% of current drivers on the grid have the ability to win on the day. Imagine watching Hass win cause their drivers were just better on the day, or Lando, Oscar, Yuki, Stroll etc

For an example the 2020 season may have been another season where Lewis Hamilton dominated the championship, however there where plenty of dramatic thing that has happen in that season that made it a great season! Like Pierre Gasly's maiden victory to Roman Grosjean's big fiery crash. Hamilton is a showman he likes to be the center of attention and when he was winning he put on an amazing show. Max is not a showman he's almost clinical. F1 as we know it , IS a dominance sport as like you said "Eras" is what we have rather than different winners baton passing the trophy to each other. there's been exactly 17 drivers that won at least 2 wdc and 17 drivers that only ever won 1. so 56 out of the 73 total wdc won by the same 17 drivers. it's literally how the sport functions, and always has functioned. if you wanna speak margins of races remining whilst the title was already secured, max's best was 4 races remaining something MSC did like 3 or 4 times, and MSC best was 6 remaining races. mansell is in that top margin as well, i think it was 4 or 5 remaining races.

2021 was the exception not the rule. There has only ever been a handful of seasons in F1 that have truly had a title fight, even in those seasons certain cars dominated on certain circuits. Even in 2021 we had a few battle between max and Lewis but for the most part it was either max running away with the lead or Lewis running away with the lead. F1 has never been great at wheel to wheel racing, there is just too much dirty air, that’s just fact. Indy car, v8 super cars and moto GP by far have always had way better racing. The only way to help racing in F1 is to make multiple strays viable and to reduce downforce. Which seems like it will never happen. The tires are also to damn durable. The tires need to be set up in a way that the two stop and one stop are viable together.
