Why the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is so controversial

Formula 1 first raced in Saudi Arabia back in 2021 but before cars even hit the track in Jeddah, the event was full of controversy. The Jeddah Street Circuit was also heavily criticised for it's wild layout and questions around safety were being asked about the fastest street circuit in Formula 1. After two races in Saudi Arabia, the circuit has proven to be one of the best street circuit's F1 has. Still, controversy around the Grand Prix remains, and will be a big topic of discussion for years to come. Enjoy!

@@alialshehri6977 The neocon war hawks annihilating Iraq was a shitty thing alright and they should be called out on it. However, the Islamic world made a good business colonizing and enslaving countless millions in Africa for centuries before the western European kingdoms started buying off the cheap labor they locked up and sold themselves (before collectively realizing the practice was shitty and ending it themselves because nobody else would, not that it stopped the enemies of Europe from guilt tripping them generations later about something that the entire world was doing). Slavery was merely banned in Saudi Arabia in 1962, and it basically still exists in Saudi Arabia with domestic servitude and construction workers from foreign Islamic countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, and India not even being paid for their work while also being customarily raped. The fact it was banned in law is surprising at all considering slavery is part of (and thus allowed) in Islam and most there don't see anything wrong with it. F1 is only in this part of the world for the money, they won't even bother pretending they're actually serious about that ESG-laden fad of standard corporate moral crusading that every western company likes to do now.

I think drivers and fans attacking Saudi Arabia for politics and what have you is very, very hypocritical. It's almost selective when it comes to which countries they shit on. If they were to pick on every country on the grid that had issues politically, or human rights violations, then we might as well remove 90% of the calendar, especially all 3 races in the US considering all the wars they've started and the countless bombs they dropped in the Middle East. Plus this entire "Cash buys anything" argument is null and void. Every country on the calendar pays to be on it. ALL of them. Regardless of the differing cost of hosting. Just because it's in the Middle East doesn't make it any different than the other countries that pay. Drivers should stop being selective and just drive to win, and fans should either hold every country accountable or none at all instead of picking and choosing who to call out. Enjoy the racing in peace.

Its not just the fact that F1 is racing in what is regarded as a brutal dictatorship. The sad truth is F1 has always been willing to race in dictatorial regimes. (e.g. The Spanish and Hungarian GP's first came to prominence when both countries were ruled by dictatorships. F1 was the last major sporting organisation to boycott South Africa because of the apartheid, long after every other organization had boycotted. F1 was headed up for many years by Max Mosley, the son of the founder of the British Fascist Party, Oswald Mosley. And so on) F1 fans are willing to look the other way when it comes to dictatorships (see: Azerbaijan/Baku), as long as the racing is good and the drivers and fans are safe. Saudi Arabia is not safe, in terms of the track (where we saw Mick Schumacher have a horrible crash last year) and in terms of the location (it is too close to the ongoing war in Yemen, of which Saudi Arabia is partially response in worsening, hence leading to the f*cking missile strike last year from the Yemeni's). The likelihood of a driver(s) or fans being killed trying to attend the Saudi GP is much, MUCH higher than any other GP on the calendar and that will never be ok.

1- The houthi-Saudi war is finished. And even since that event and even before it we’ve never witnessed an airstrike. How can you blame the side whose being attacked as if they were planning for it. 2- Accidents happen in F1 race and no one blames the track for it. I mean come on mick shumacher binned it in not only one race but two. Latifi binned it twice in the same weekend. It is the driver error to blame her. Would you blame silverstone for Zhou’s crash or sakhir for grosjean crash absolutely no. 3- Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries in earth where guns are not allowed unlike other countries. USA is not even safe for its own people let alone fans, yet we will go there three times. 4- clearly you’re biased and whatever you’re saying is just media brainwashing Saudi Arabia has become one of the leading countries of the world. As much as I love this circuit and the great racing, we as fans, get to watch around this track. Personally, I don't like the fact that F1 and other sporting events are allowed to happen in countries like this that have so many human rights issues.

On paper this circuit looks terrible, but in practice it has proven to he a great race track. Plenty of action from the last 2races. Ocon v Alonso, Max v Charles, Max v Lewis, Bottas v Ocon, etc. As for their political issues, I like to keep that separate from sport

I think it's a fantastic track with 2 great races having been raced there, and definitely both the best street track and Middle-Eastern track. However, I think this is a glaring example of the grotesque disregard for human rights shown by F1. Unfortunately, I don't see it changing. I'd gladly sacrifice this track if it meant a larger focus on human rights

I think what makes formula 1 interesting is the fact that it is potentially deadly. Now you may say that it is not morally right to purposefully design dangerous tracks because they're exciting to watch, and I'll answer that nobody is forcing anyone to race there. Yes it's risky, yes you may die, but if you don't want to take any risk just stay in your bed all your life. The fear of death is what keeps us alive.

On the topic of human rights, there is nothing you nor I as a Muslim myself can do to change the rules of a religion, Saudi is purely on the calendar bc of their oil money, not to promote certain ideals, and banning any majority Islamic country from participating bc of the religion's rules is Islamphobia, which itself goes against 'We race as one' by excluding Muslims I'm not a Formula E watcher, but as far as I'm aware they've been racing in Morocco since the early seasons, Morocco also made it to the semis of the FIFA World Cup, so there is no issue with participation of Islamic countries in any other sport, and Nicholas Latifi is part-Iranian, so there's no issue with the participation of Islamic countries in sport, what's the whole issue with hosting a competition or certain event in a sports calendar, other than a lot seems to be built from scratch?

Not a fan of Saudi’s government, but the people and the race itself are both good. The new improvements to the track should make it safer by expanding the sight around corners for drivers. Hopefully we will get a good race like we had in 21 and 22.

I think it's very sad that we are losing historical and great circuits like Nurburgring and possibly Spa because of money. This is ok as a circuit but I think it's quite dangerous. If we think about environmental issues this way of building is probably not great either.

Nowadays, I feel like F1 is only chasing money, and it's pretty normal: they're a company, and need revenue. However, they disregard history and fans for the sake of money: for example, instead of Indianapolis, Sonoma, Road America, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen...which are historical American circuits with a lot of crowd passion, we have Las Vegas and Miami, one is located on the Strip with prices as low as 1000 bucks, and the other one being on a car park for the first time since that abomination of Caesars Palace in 1982. Impo, I'd rather have Hockenheim, Nurburgring, Indianapolis, Sepang, Fuji than Jeddah
@gionniblood
@gionniblood Рік тому
Sad truth is real circuits are expensive to mantain already and hosting an F1 weekend costs way more than what they can hope to get back. Street circuits are more profitable not only to F1, but to the organisers as well.

I do agree that the inboards on this race are phenomenal, but other than that there's a lot of issues. The track has no visibility for no other reason than to mimick Monaco and call it a street circuit. The walls are too close to the track and this could be easily avoided by moving those away and make some clearance in case something bad happens. In no way a blind 200km/h corner is safe. Or maybe the drivers need that speed to avoid the missiles, I don't know. They should switch this to Igora drive, at least there's no missiles falling near the track, the Ukraine is too far.

I have mixed feelings about F1 in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah is the place where my parents lived and met, and from what I've heard from them, Saudi isn't as bad as what the media say. But there's definitely sketchy things going on there. But if we're talking about human rights and all that then we shouldn't really be racing in Bahrain, China, the US, etc either. As for the track itself, the 2 races there have been quite exciting, and I do enjoy driving it on F1 22. But at the same time it's quite dangerous, although I've heard that they're making changes to the run-off and moving walls further back. So in summary, good track, but the location is not quite right.

Race track is Dangerous as all hell and country certainly is NOT the most stable arround. to me this track should remain on the Simulators and Videogames and NOT on real life untill propper runoff areas are installed and the issues of the Kingdom are resolved. and my criticism also applies to Monaco... that track needs to be reformulated... for yesterday... and i don't care it is a historical track/event, it is dangerous and unfit to host races. and yes, yes, i know about Paul Ricard being boring and Rulesfor new circuits being strict, but come on guys... Interlagos, Albert Park, heck Baku even (wich would need just small changes in the layout imo... but BIG changes in the government of that country) are adequate... but this spoon?! Nope, no way in hell... also, can we stop for a moment and see the bullshit that it is the CGI they are showing us on the Purpouse Built track? a Swimming pool over the track?! Forests in the Middle of the DESERT?! Holograms?! honestly... WTF are they smoking?! completely unsustainable and not fit neither for the Net-Zero targets (which are bullshit imo too, but hey what to i know), and track safety in general. if that transparent plexi-glass pool breaks, and it WILL break because of the vibrations of the cars passing by, the spectators will fall on the track, and best case scenario, a broken spinal cord, worst case, minced meat. we don't need another Tom Pryce horrific incident waiting to happen for the love of god. spectators should never be put on this kind of danger. honestly, best case scenario this "circuit" is not built, and worst case we will have another abandoned white elephant like Valencia was after 2 or 3 races, because dear god, a DESERT cannot have trees,Holograms and swimming pools, it will be a logistical Nightmare and something too expensive to even mantain in a world where we NEED to look at climate change seriously. also, i could go on on the bullshit of E-fuels and F1 pledge between the 2030-2040 timeframe that absolutely WILL NOT WORK, and will kick out the sport from a LOT of countries that will ditch Fossil fuels and anything that burns, but that's for another time.

As a Saudi F1 fan, I'd like to offer you an alternative view. Imagine you’re a resident of the country and you’re affected by the issues and you know there’s no escaping it… but then there’s racing! Would make it a tad more bearable, wouldn’t it? Also, a lot of us appreciate the human rights sentiment, but all of us feel frustrated when it’s only us being told off, while Uncle Sam and his allies violate the international law and human rights for breakfast, yet they can have all the races. So, can we just agree that we all suck (apart from Monaco, perhaps) and just go racing?
@MudarBahri
@MudarBahri Рік тому
What's called "human rights" is a very rubbery word that can include anything that fits someone's agenda, and exclude everything that doesn't. So if Louis Hamilton doesn't like that "gays" don't have rights in Saudi, that's right, and I'm proud that it doesn't. He can stay home if he doesn't want to participate. On another note, I don't like street tracks in general, but this one is different, and it gives thrilling races.
