Ever wonder what happens if you run out of juice in an electric car in an area with no cell service and great charging options? How do you get to safety? We found out as our friend Drew ran out of charge in his Tesla Model 3 Performance and we had to tow the car with the 2022 BMW X5 45e PHEV to charge up the Tesla's battery. This is an insanely cool perk of owning an electric car!

The X5 is a beast! Expect a full review soon. This was actually our best option to get Drew to a charger. It’s so cool that with an electric car all you need is a tow rope and you can go anywhere! This is a huge perk not often discussed. What do you think, was this smart or sketchy?

I think you missed another trick, if you carry two extension cables in North America, and make a 2x120v to 1x 240v Y cable you can combine two outlets (non gfci) to get 240v 12A as long the two outlets are not on the same phase. For teslas you just need to purchase a Nema 6-15 adapter, and make your y cable with a female 6-15. It’s also relatively safe because if both outlets are on the same phase there is 0 volts at the 6-15 cable.

I have been stuck on a closed road for a while (due to an accident) and was dangerously low when I finally arrived at the gas station. I also had an issue while driving a work truck in WV, where I was having troubles finding an open station which had diesel, this was in the early 2000's. And I am also old enough to remember the energy crisis in the early 1970's where you couldn't fill up on even or odd days (depending what your license plate ended with). And Texas last winter - where you couldn't get gas because a lot of stations did not have electric generators and then the issue in the Mid-Atlantic where panic buying caused a mini-gas crisis. It is not like people do not run out of gas on the road but to blame this event as why you do not trust charging is insane.

My only issue is with the tow strap doubled up. Use the hooks at each car. Plenty strong, more time to react, and less likely to damage either car.
@btwbrand
@btwbrand 2 роки тому
Problem was the hooks were oversized and had no clasps to keep them attached to each vehicle. As they were they would easily fall off. They had tape as we saw but it was probably better suited to use it the way they did rather than risking the tape breaking if the hook moved in an unintended way.

I really think that plug-in hybrids have a lot of advantages over full electrics. Yes you do have two drive-terrains (and more things to break), but they are complementary. The price for battery raw materials is going to soar, going full EV anytime soon is going to be almost impossible. The excellent 45e can use its battery for most of most short trips but still has the petrol engine in backup in-case you get stuck on a mountain pass.

Tesla needs to implement a software update for Recharge Towing - so if the inverters start to gain too much heat from being worked - that they can lower the recharge rate - to prevent overheating. Theoretically it would allow a driver to put their battery charge level in a better place, even if it took a little longer.
@ronolsberg1468
@ronolsberg1468 2 роки тому
The driver of the Tesla could have set regen to a lower level which should generate less motor heat. Lowering regen should also put less stress on the pulling vehicle and the tow strap. It would have been nice to see the cell temps before and during towing via SMT. When the traction battery is colder, there would be less regen; likewise, if the cell temps where cold enough tow charging would not work at all (ie... no regen). I assume having the car charging on 120V for some time would have warmed the traction battery temp? Towing should be easy with the strap because regen will keep the tow strap taunt.

If you use your Tesla Navigation, you’ll be forewarned about things like road closings as well as warning you when to drive to a supercharger, and which one is closest and within your range. This shouldn’t really happen (and when was the last time you saw a Tesla stranded on the side of a road because it ran out of charge, right?). Especially when CP support is available. Also, just like you may come upon an old gas station with no gas, this is possible. Let's hope we have enough time to fix these charging infrastructure issues before the whole world goes full blown electric in the 2030s. Let's hope incidents like these are just teething issues that will hopefully be ironed out as we gain more data and more experience about electric cars over the coming years. Because in 15 - 20 years from now, the number of electric cars on the road will start rising exponentially as all the new ICE cars being bought and driven up until the worldwide ICE ban start getting old and have to be replaced by electric cars. If we get to the 2030s while we still have such terrible charging infrastructure issues, then we will basically be screwed.

Just because people and politicians and corporations tell you a date we will all live in ev only world doesnt make it true... in fact 2 out of 3 of those are always actively trying to sell you on an ideal or product that doesn't exist until you and the large majority buy in first to their sales pitches.
@chillout1109
@chillout1109 2 роки тому
@@TheWyrmsfire Except this is not a test. This IS going to happen. Hell, it's already started. Every car maker you can name has already gone electric in one way or another, or is going electric soon. Environmental pressures also mean that many governments around the world are actually going to start banning the sale of new Internal Combustion Engined cars from 2030. Here in the UK, new petrol and diesel cars are being banned from 2030, with a Hybrid and PHEV ban following in 2035. Other countries have their own timelines too, spread from the 2030s to the 2050s. This is certainly not a sales pitch.

Curious how this squares with the oft-repeated statement that you cannot "flat tow" a Tesla (such as Dave Lee would like to do behind his RV). Can someone enlighten me?

Tesla (and probably other EVs) don't have a Neutral, which would disconnect the wheels from the motor. The wheels are always connected to the motor. What the "N" mode does, is put enough enectricity into the motor so that it doesn't provide any resistance to the wheels (so it behaves just like neutral in normal cars). You can do that only while you still have working 12V and HV battery. If you try to tow without it, the motor would probably try to generate some electricity (work as a generator) and that would (could?) damage the motor/inverter electronics. No idea if that damage is guaranteed or just possible and how fast it would happen.

This is scary. I don’t like going to parts without cell service because of something like this. Not everyone has a spare BMW they can use to tow charge a car.

@@CityLifeinAmerica Well, I'm sure the business they are parked at has internet. Make a wifi enabled call. Sit there until the car had enough charge off the level one. Stay warm with the emergency winter survival kit you keep in the trunk. Hitch hike out of there. This isn't the only building in Allenspark, CO - start knocking on doors until you find a sympathetic ear. I'll come up with more later.
