Not exactly the BEST BEST BEST ending due to a million different ways to approach this, but best in the sense that the nameless one comes to "know" himself, merge with TTO, revive his fallen friends, and say his goodbyes before finally accepting his fate.
game of the year all years, also new torment game

This is probably the best game ever made. I absolutely love this ending, and the last minutes with your party, it's both bitter and sweet at the same time and extremely satisfying. Every time I play Grace's words really get to me, that last conversation with her just brings a little bit of hope into the mix.

Direct quote from TNO "If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. I’ve seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not.

What stuck me most, is that actual ending is sculped right at the start, and final battle takes place at the begining. You are being foretold by your deceased love about everything, you only have to choose means on how to get there. Flashback story, sense of inevitable end and amazing art that holds against curse of time are traits of this masterpiece. Play it if you didn't, and prepare to be amazed. He is just a footsoldier in an infinitely futile conflict that exists only to show the self-defeating nature of evil. No glory. No heroics. Just senseless, brutal and utterly pointless conflict across the plains. Its similar to Jon Irenicus in Baldurs Gate II. When he dies he confronted by shadowy demons there to torment him. Depending on your actions and how you've developed your TNO, you will have different options that lead to failure or success depending on that history. Do you know the secret language of Uyo and its significance? Did you find the sounding stone? The blade of the immortal? You can possibly end up convincing, threatening, mentally controlling, suicide or fighting your way out of the end. How you can even compare this ending as on par with ME3's "the ending has a different color" is beyond me.

This part of the story springs from one of the three cornerstone principles of the Planescape setting: the Unity of Rings. It states that everything has a tendency to come back to its starting point, both physically and metaphorically. The other two principles are the Rule-Of-Three, which is discussed briefly in-game and which is exactly what it sounds like, and the Center of All, which argues that for any subject, the multiverse centers on *them*. The last one isn't really played up in-game.

Funnily enough, I also thought of PS:T's ending when I saw ME3's one. But the difference is, in PS:T you got all important things answered, there were no plot holes, no threads left dangling. The issues with your companions were resolved and there was a great sense of closure at the end. You got everything you deserved to get, considering how you played. ME3's ending was a mess and utterly unsatisfactory. And too bad, because the game up until then was quite nice.

I think he has already accepted everything that he is and has done. Two things remain, then: reparations and, eventually, self forgiveness. Because he's going to need the latter if he intends to fulfill the former correctly, because he'll need to work from places OTHER than the Gray Wastes to do that. All the same, a few millennia in hell might still provide some much needed voluntary soul cleansing first. Hm... but he did say that time works differently in hell, so maybe he'll get to meet his companions in the meanwhile. Well, the ones who would both still be alive, or "alive", and WANT to make the trip for him anyway. Considering what the Wastes of Hades do to people, especially long-term visitors who came alone, he's going to need them.

Good question. I usually talked Vhailor into passing on but I always brought Nordom with me... such a fun character, well worth the enormous pain in the ass it took to recruit him. It's a little subjective, but I think there is an even better ending than that. You can convince TTO to join you back, because you analyzed that he is getting weaker with time, and has become a prisonner of this fortress. Bear in mind that many of the fans of Planescape Torment also hated Mass Effect 3's ending, and with good reason. People were unhappy with ME3's ending because the player was robbed of control of the protagonist. We were given the opportunity to play therapist to an insane AI, but we weren't allowed to play therapist to an insane AI. The two endings are polar opposites of storytelling.

Planescape Torment doesn't inevitably end in the protagonist's death. Correction: it's opaquely hinted that Shepard *might* live in one of the endings.

@xRH84x Really wasn't that hard once i got the hang of it, spacebar helped ;) I also didn't do all the sidequests and it took me pretty much just as long, maybe a little longer.

It's funny how people say that ME3 made no sense, considering that many people, including myself, predicted great chunks of it as early as when ME1 came out. It wasn't a huge twist at all, and fit perfectly with my expectations. The only thing that I was left missing was a couple of sadistic choices. People who insist on lack of internal consistency never got the Mass Effect franchise in the first place.

I really love this game (surely one of the best rpg ever made, maybe the best) but the ending is not satisfied me at all. It left me a feeling of slight indecisiveness. Just for example, which incarnation taught the art to Ignus? But above all I thought I could finish the relationship with my classmates in a more comprehensive way, as with Annah for example. Also who was the first incarnation? The last true magician? A commander in the bloody war? Both things?

I only saw four companions! Where was Nordom? For the BEST, nearest-to-perfect ending surely you need to take companions who you don't end up killing before the final showdown at the very least?

The ending had to go through quick revision, which is why it was originally published in a clearly unfinished state, but it was for the better by a long shot. The stupidity that was the "Dark Energy"-ending was thankfully wiped out like it never existed, as it would have destroyed the franchise for all time (Mass Effect without mass effect? Yeah.). The actual ending fortunately fixed the matter, and contains a promise of future games to come.

...But he basically sits forever in that chair, doing pretty much nothing. And eventually goes insane. And STILL sits in that chair. That kind of sucks.

The endings would have been connected with the alignment system and would each present a different ending to the question (which else? :D) "What can change the nature of a man?". In the EVIL ending (this one) its - nothing, that's why TNO is send in the Blood War - if nothing can change the nature of a man - the evils he has done - he cant achieve redemption. The NEUTRAL ending would have left him in the Blood War again, while in the GOOD he would have achieved the True Death.

Nameless > Abdel Adrian > Hero of Icewind Dale. I love Icewind Dale as a game but holy shit the protagonists in Baldurs Gate and Torment are literally just God's.

The Nameless One is more than god. He is black hole wandering through Planes, dragging Torment in his wake.
