Рік томуLast week, many Americans were introduced to slap fighting and 'Power Slap' the new combat sports outfit backed by the UFC and its lighting-rod president, Dana White. Several sports-medicine experts have since criticized the TBS program. "It is a recipe for brain injury and a recipe for disaster," neuroscientist Chris Nowinski, co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, tells TIME.

I have at least 4 confirmed concussions and one TBI from a motorcycle accident. I cringe everytime I see this shows highlights. I live with constant headaches, fatigue, depression, mood swings ect ect. People don’t understand usually until they are in the same boat.

@@funfact8660 Back in those days the gladiators usually didn't have much of a choice, they participated in gladiatorial battles as an alternative to execution, some gladiators even won their freedom after winning a handful of fights. These guys are willfully signing up to receive brain damage, for only a few thousand dollars.

I think this might actually be worse than punches from fighting. Boxers can't put 100% in to the shots, hitting a moving target is hard enough but also they'd be spent half way through the first round. Power slap is just one, full power, fully telegraphed hit to the side of the head with no pads on hands. A big slap is a similar action to a kick, it has a lot of power, it's just not used in fighting because it's so easy to defend you'll probably never manage to land one.

Power Slap strikes are a lot harder than punches. It's always a rotation motion, and a slap carries more energy than a punch. It's not that it won't cause a cut, or visible damage, but the energy transfer is much harder and thus brain damage. If these "fighters" are able to remember their names in 20 years, I will be happy for them.

To those talking about cobsenting adults blah blah blah: should someone be able to consent to being hunted for sport by people in tanks? How about torture for life? Should we tolerate organizations that sanction this? A large portion of these people who participate for an extended period of time will suffer terrible pain, memory loss, depression, moodswings, and eventually lose all function. It's not an exaggeration to call this torture. By then its too late to change your mind. These people need to be protected from being exploited.

Mark my words, these guys are gonna be filing lawsuits and making dramatic sad stories in a few years talking about how powerslap ruined their life.
