TEDx Talks

8 років тому

Eight years ago Jim Kambeitz faced a choice: have another knee surgery or do yoga to heal and realign his joints properly. He had lost his ability to walk, so he knew that if he was to heal he’d need to commit to a serious daily practice. Months later, Jim was surprised to find that in addition to healing his knee to the point that surgery was no longer necessary, yoga transformed his life.
Jim enjoys sharing the healing power of yoga and meditation as a yoga teacher and filmmaker. He has spent much of the past 20 years traveling the world, learning languages and studying under gurus from India and Europe to Brazil. He earned his Masters in Film Theory at UND and studied cinematography at the Polish National Film School. Jim and his wife, Angie, have produced three yoga DVDs, including "Mysore Magic: Yoga at the Source," which is being distributed in over 60 countries. Their website is upwardspiralfilms.com
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

My mother is an Aayurvedic doctor, and she always told me that the main difference between Aayurveda and Western/modern medicine is that the former treats the root cause whereas the latter treats the symptoms.

It’s very unfortunate that people resort to yoga and meditation as a desperate bid to get better. More often than not, it’s a last resort. This really should be our first and primary approach if we really want ourselves to heal

So amazing, the benefits of pranayama! Everyone should turn to yoga, meditation and breath work instead of reaching for medications or considering surgery as a primary choice of healing.

Amazing, so amazing, especially the child calming. That tells it all. If only the world would embrace these things it could be a paradise. Because it also instinctually makes you compassionate, more responsible towards the environment, others, society.... I hope there comes a time when they start teaching this in schools, just the excercises without any religious background because we know everyone would immediately jump in the air. Just the skills and excercises of meditation and yoga. In a generation or two we would change the world for the better more than in the last 150 years.

THANKS HEAPS FOR THIS, I’ve already started because it’s free and I can still be lazy & hide in my house because I’ve been frozen with fear since a COPD diagnosis two weeks ago. I know this is the only way I will be able to quit smoking. I am so damn addicted to these awful cancer sticks despite the fact that I am a parent to one. I just told my 12 year old daughter about this lecture and showed her the graph about slow breathing and longevity and she says “does that mean if you stopped breathing you’d live forever?”🤣 just had to share that. Love to you all💗 (I’m happy now because I’ve just done 3 minutes of slow breathing. Just one minute on my phone timer every time I want a ciggy-that’s all I have to remember 👍👍👍)

Average Boy there's no ignorance when open to something like the content of this video. I doubt you know much about Wim Hof besides the assumptions you wildly throw out, it's better if you elaborate on your concerns. It's ok to dislike him regardless, but I'm sure he is very open to the content of this video, just like he was in the past which enabled him to learn the things he does right now. I'm sure people can judge for themselves when they are confronted with Wim Hof's material and the ongoing scientific studies being done, no need to be worried about them unwillingly entering a cult, which it is not anyway.

Maybe anxiety is like a spark trying to jump start our nervous systems. Makes sense because many of of us are like old cars, running slow from chronic stress, shot nervous systems so all we can manage is some weird, anxious twitch to try to force us to action. Threatening ourselves instead of using positive reinforcement which, btw is proven to work best for all mammals- no matter your shape! The fight or flight response is so worn out because it’s always on and many mammals, rather than fight (who’s got the energy, right?!) will freeze. Fear creates inaction. Faith and hope create action. This is proven research people! You know why people like immediate rewards? It’s obvious. Why wait for some unsure reward in “the future”? Because we might be dead in the future!

Thank you for your offer! I also wish the audio could be fixed, but there isn't much of a signal to work with because the audio system's wireless lav mics failed during the first TEDx talk of the day, and this handheld mic was a quick fix to get house audio, so this mic only went to the house speakers and was not able to be split and sent to another source to be recorded. Thus the audio used for the video edit is from a camera 15 feet away with a shotgun mounted on it last minute so there would be something to capture. But even if you were able to clean it up and fix it, TED only allows the file to be uploaded immediately after the event and after a video is up you can't take it down, nor can you swap it out for the improved version. It's on your permanent record. I wish I could redo the talk, and tighten up the content more too, but I can't. Thank you for offering. You are a kind person. -Jim Kambeitz

Suresh, sorry I didn't do a better job at making it clear to the audience that I was joking and laughing at the modern doctors who think they have "discovered" yoga...and that's why I added in the word "finally" in the slide with the photo of the western doctor. I wasn't saying yoga needs medical approval. I was laughing at doctors' & westerners' need to "prove" things are real by testing it in a laboratory, and only then can they "believe". I believe yoga does not need medical approval; yoga has transformed my life and many of my friends' lives. I am so grateful for this ancient practice. Deep respect. But on the other hand, I am grateful doctors are paying attention to yoga and studying it, because more westerners are finally discovering the power of yoga for themselves as a result. The more people who do yoga, the better the world will be. I hope this reply helps clear up my intentions. Thanks for caring enough to reply, Suresh. Namaste, Jim Kambeitz

Nope. You breath faster as the need for your body to be oxygenated. You're breathing faster because of necessity. Exercise will lower you heart rate and make the oxygenation of your blood more efficient allowing for more difficult forms of pranayama.

CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION!!!! Yes, yoga can help and there are benefits, just as there are benefits to breathing (duh) but that whole lifespan and bpm graph just proves that how long you live and your bpm are correlated, but there is no proof in the graph that by having less/longer breath CAUSES you to live longer. There needs to be more work done there. It also concerns me that they're selling yoga as a cure-all, I'm not denying benefits in being healthy and meditating and practicing yoga but it won't fix serious medical problems.

You would be surprised the potential the human body can overcome through different expressions. Many illnesses come from poor breathing, bodily tension, stress, personal disconnect from systems within our bodies. We say we can’t control the unconscious mind or nervous system, immune system. But we always say what makes it worse… if you tap into the truths of the body. You realise you can control most things. And if you make something a habit and practice it ritually. You can change your life.

@UpwardSpiralFilms
@UpwardSpiralFilms 6 років тому
You are right, Michael. I didn't mean to oversimplify things in that analogy. Nor did I mean to draw apples to oranges conclusions. I wish a TEDx talk wasn't under 18 minutes and I could have had more time to be more detailed and careful in laying out the case I was trying to make with that illustration. My fault. Sorry I didn't do a better job with that part. Thanks for making bringing up the point that there are many other differences between those two animals. That is indeed something I was not trying to deny. My point was merely that if a human will slow down their breathing rate they will live longer - for countless scientifically measurable reasons- based on the overwhelmingly positive effects such breathing patterns have on ones digestion, ones brain & neural activity, circulatory, lymphatic system, heart and vascular system. It seems to be a general pattern among our mammal species relatives as well... whether it is causative or simply coincidence, there is an interesting coincidence there. I'd like to think there is something to it... Regardless, thanks for caring enough to comment. There are so many things I'd like to change or redo in this talk, but it's too late, TED doesn't allow a person to take it down, change the talk or redo the video, so I guess I'll just have to accept it with all it's limitations. Take care, Michael. Jim Kambeitz

UpwardSpiralFilms 18 mins is more than enough time to put across a point and explain it. It you were at Toastmasters you'd have 5-7 mins, maybe no more than 10. I get where you are coming from with the breathing. But this was overly simplistic verging on coming across as pseudo science at times.

While I agree with the content, this man isn't doing himself any favours by sounding like a salesman.. could be bad for getting the message across.

Eastern philosophy or Islam doesn't have abstract reasoning and thinking and theoretical thinking (it's a fact which for them is difficult to admit because they can't grasp the difference as in Christian understanding and that's why those none Christian philosophies and yoga is rubbish compare with Christianity especially Catholic Faith and teachings theology Eucharist as true Blood and Body of God Jesus Christ and not only symbol or mind but can be observed in the mind and understanding but next to but in relation as objective truth reality no matter of subjective interpretation or thinking or understanding...the same about the rest of Sacraments science philosophy even Thomas Aquinas or St.Augustine and all Bible and Trinity based western Christian abstract thinking which is only in the West and is as a key for all discoveries and understandings analysis as key understanding Trinity True God True Son God Jesus True God Holy Spirit in one and you have ground visible and not but all are true and different relations in between but not illusion or just mind as only reality as in the East...where everyone is or can be all and therefore be lost not finding deference about reality and reality as a mind and God as separate next to all but in relation with all but not creation as part of creation as in the East and understanding about humans and universe as created beings about creation and creator God. Eastern philosophy brings only confusion and delusion but attractive for many because there is only own human strength-based understanding about possibility to become God...but the truth is they are not God and never will regardless of all efforts they are putting into...but in the West and Christianity is clear creation and men human can have relationship with God and creation as independent but related complete beings....in reality, and also in the mind

Christianity brings vastly more confusion. As a person who was Christian their whole life it is nothing but forcing you to go against your natural human instinct. At least the east philosophies understood human kind and preached understanding instead of.. the Spanish inquisition.

Jesus himself visited India to learn yoga and meditation. At least read your own stuff properly before blurting out

It's not Yoga, it's breathing. Every breath comes from YAHWEH, not from Yoga.

You misspelt lungs. Also you clearly don't know yoga. As a Christian you should love pranayama, it follows the same principles as genesis. God breathed the breath of life into Adam. Pranayama is all about the divinity inside you.

That's completely ridiculous that he's comparing us to animals. The human being,.. the mammals, you and me, is so much more than just an animal.

Great talk and vision, Jim! Thank you for sharing your story. And don't mind negative comments - there are still unhappy people out there. But it's getting better and talks like this one are making it happen.

So amazing, the benefits of pranayama! Everyone should turn to yoga, meditation and breath work instead of reaching for medications or considering surgery as a primary choice of healing.
