Is your breathing restricted right now, and would you even know if it was? Professional actor, director, and self-development coach Rory Ledbetter studies what happens when you release your breath and focus on gratitude in moments of stress or panic. Ledbetter explains why we should pay more attention to the connection between our thoughts and our breathing and presents a new technique called Connective Flow that can immediately improve your awareness and reduce your level of stress. Professional artist and self-development coach Rory Ledbetter studies what happens mentally and physiologically when you release the desire to speak. Ledbetter explains why we should celebrate moments of deep breathing in silence and presents new techniques that can immediately calm your mind.
Rory Ledbetter is an award-winning actor, director, filmmaker, and speaking coach. He is an Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Mississippi, where he trains performers and speakers to engage and utilize their imaginations in various modes of self-expression, and to authentically connect with an audience in performance.
Ledbetter is certified in Fitzmaurice Voicework®, and has broad professional experiences and interests ranging from acting and voice over to directing theatre and film. Rory’s work with speakers is focused on promoting the use of breathing and mindfulness to enhance personal growth and development.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Loved this! Thank you so much. I have been researching breathing online and there is much conflicting evidence but the exercises described here are working for me- no doubt. I started bawling 3 breaths in when he was showing us the exercise- tears of joy and gratitude. Here is another thing to be grateful for. 1000 thanks! It’s brilliant because there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for.

I'm going to try this! :) The research tells us that practising 'gratitude' alone improves our mental health. This is the first time I've heard a talk on practising gratitude aligned with breathing in the western world. It does remind me that this is what Thich Nhat Hanh teaches..... Thank you...

@emmalikesflowers
@emmalikesflowers 5 років тому
Travis Bickle it’s just relaxed slow breathing as is comfortable for you except on the exhale you think of something-anything- that you are personally grateful for. It’s about shifting focus from what you don’t have (which breeds fear & negativity) to what you do have. I’ve started to do this and it’s helping already. Traffic was terrible yesterday but I focused on the fact that my car still works. Yay! Good luck!

@@daveunited4493 Dear sir, All hindu practices (on breath and meditation etc) are not religious. For eg. long ago, to make people eat with right hand, religion was linked and made it compulsory. To day all people irrespective of religion are practicing it (eat with right hand) I don't think it is possible to prove (all hindu religious practices) scientifically. But, I am Sure they have strength.( e.g Breath can do wonders).

I can't keep listening to somebody who has learned by heart the gestures that will illustrate his "monologue" and uses them in a such unnatural way, with locked shoulders and chaotic discourse pace (silences, in particular, are not long enough). Would you ever believe such a bad actor?
