Using Proxmox 7.4-3 and following your video. Not so much has changed, except your gripe about unnecessary error messages, and the console has a nice dark theme. Thank you for posting this video series. I find this far easier than ESXi, even though it is very similar, your process is more rewarding, especially on legacy devices.

Here I am, learning the proxmoxes. What would have been helpful would be "what is qemu-guest-agent" (guessing it's like vmware tools, etc.) and what does it do. Also, how to give your vm GPU support if needed, and how to get it to recognize other storage drives on the system. This stuff of course may be covered later in the course, or left for, uh, independent study. :) Good video series!

This series is amazing. The time machine is helping... okay tired joke. I mean that record all the footage and afterwards editing the footage to suit the future destination is making this good fun. I'm contemplating a FreeNAS shared storage with Proxmox hosts for the VMs. My constraint is lower the power and size, as the houseghld probably doesn't want anything bigger than a two drawer filing cabinet. Time to build a custom enclosure to blend into the house surrounds.

I've installed Linux, Windows, and macOS VMs using Proxmox; all of the GUIs worked at least adequately (though not always with the greatest performance). One difference from the video is that I typically launch the console using the Console button near the top of the screen, rather than the one in the left sidebar. This way, the console opens in its own window, and can resize as needed to match the desired resolution of the guest.

Sorry for a late reply here Alert Shaikh, I just wanted to pipe in to give some info here. A VM is a full operating system. So you can have multiple applications on a VM. You can run for example - an LDAP server, a mail server, web server, database server, as well as a plex, or Owncloud/Nextcloud server, all in the same VM. It's basically the same as running a second (3rd, 4th, or 5th) computer on your computer. It is all going to be based upon the resources available to the VM, such as RAM, CPU, and storage space. If you put too many applications on it, you will see it in performance, just like having too many applications on your computer will cause it to drag too. As far as I know, you can use the same storage for each of the nodes on the computer, so you really only need one storage, but Jay would definitely be the resource for that one.

The qemu-guest-agent is a helper daemon, which is installed in the guest. It is used to exchange information between the host and guest, and to execute command in the guest. In Proxmox VE, the qemu-guest-agent is used for mainly two things: * To properly shutdown the guest, instead of relying on ACPI commands or windows policies * To freeze the guest file system when making a backup (on windows, use the volume shadow copy service VSS).

So let me ask you this. Why do you need to keep the ISO file on your "local drive" after you installed it? I set up proxmox on my (2) Dell R720 servers so I have the two server in cluster. The first VMs I put in was TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.1.iso On each server. After all was setup and working good I deleted the iso file if it's installed and working good no need to waste space by keeping the ISO File on there right? Now they will not start at all. I get this in the log "TASK ERROR: volume 'local:iso/TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.1.iso' does not exist" Do I need to keep the ISO's in the Local Drive For All VM's I Install on it? seems like wasted space to me.

Hi Jay, Im new to proxmox and your tutorials has been making learning this much easier, I do have an issue though that I cant seem to find the answer too anywhere, this might be a long description so I thank you ahead of time for your patience. I have a Dell Poweredge T130 with a Xenon single processor 4core, 32 Gig of Ram, Virtualization enabled (I use to run windows 10 with hyper-v no problems) and a variety of hard drives inside. I got proxmox to install just fine, I was able to initialize all drives and became quite familiar with proxmox due to your tutorials. My problem is with Virtual Machines, I have them installed and everything looks fine, I used all the defaults just as you did, but none of my VM's will boot up on this particular Server. the Error Description I get is "VM 100 -Start " Status = "Error start failed QEMU exited with code1" then followed by Status = "Error connection timed out." This happens with my Ubuntu Server installation as well as my Windows and basically any other VM ive tried. I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled multiple time with no luck. I ALSO setup proxmox on my Lenovo W530 laptop with 32 gig Ram Intel 4core and a couple of hdd, and everything runs absolutely perfect on that. I cant find anything on "vm's wont start with QEMU exited with code 1" - any suggestions would be highly appreciated
