A lot of elderly people are so emotionally tied to their pets, they would be horrified & heartbroken at the suggestion that they give up a dog when it needs treatment they can't afford. The owner could have spent weeks trying to find the money, & finally realized it's not fair to the animal. Their emotional attachment keeps them from doing the best thing for the dog quickly, even though it's obvious to an outsider.
@michelleangello8313
@michelleangello8313 2 роки тому
I have to agree with you Patty7. If in fact it was an elderly person who had Lexi, it really is hard on the elderly to lose their companion even when they know the animal needs help. Only thing though is that Lexi was a puppy and anyone elderly wouldn't get a puppy knowing the challenges they would have to face, they would get an older dog for companionship so the more I think about it I'm assuming Lexi's owner was a much younger person.......but your thought process was very compassionate toward the elderly.......😊

Most vets will take instalment payments. Many charities will help with vet costs. I don't think being elderly is an ok excuse tbh. If you can't afford vet care it's not fair to take on pets.

Thank god for caring rescue folks and vets. Its hard to believe all this cruelty and negligence. Andrew’s genius and dedication go a long way to giving me hope for the human condition.
@lottasunshine1325
@lottasunshine1325 2 роки тому
At least the owner surrendered her, so we should be grateful for that. Some people simply don't understand that a dog can appear to be happy and still be in pain. I'm not excusing the neglect, but maybe he/she didn't have enough money for a vet. Unfortunately, many people don't realize animals need a lot of care and can be expensive to raise, like a child. I ran into this several times when I rescued animals, and not just with dog and cat owners. Some people put a small bird (like a parakeet) or a rodent (like a gerbil) in a cage and don't realize it's not just a decoration and requires love, proper nutrition and medicare care.
@gabib.1780
@gabib.1780 2 роки тому
@@lottasunshine1325 True, but they surrendered her way too late. That dog isn't yet out of the woods, she may still end up losing that leg. When you see an injury you can take the dog to the vet and when diagnosed simply say you don't have the money to treat them. Any vet, anywhere will help put one in contact with a rescue organisation. Some will do some surgeries pro bono. There are options.. 6 weeks is a very long time to wait

I had this cat, not really feral, but he and a bunch of cats lived in an abandoned cellar at the rear of my home. He ‘allowed’ us to feed him on the back stoop for a few weeks, then he allowed us to let him in on cold nights. Finally he allowed us to pet him and moved in. Forward a couple of years, during a particularly cold winter (this is Maine) he developed a severe limp. He had always limped but this was severe. I took him to the vet where he was x-rayed. At first, as the doctor showed me his x-ray he had his back to me as he asked how long I had had him. When I explained he was a stray I’d taken in, he turned to look at me as he explained the picture. I think he was suspicious I might be the cause of his injuries. Chipper, we called him Chipper’s hip had been dislocated, the ball was fused above the socket and was surrounded by arthritis. Between the hip and knee was a 45 degree break, also filled in with calcium. Another break between the knee and ankle made the leg look like extra joints in every direction. The way it was bent inward made me think of a very heavy kick instead of a run in with a car bumper. Imagine the pain he suffered for how many years. Chipper was a total outdoor cat, he absolutely refused a litter box. He just hissed at it when I tried to get him to use it. I thought it might be the litter he objected to so I bought some potting soil. (Mid winter, remember). No go, so when he asked to go out I carried him down the stairs and waited for him to finish, then carried him back and laid him on a heated bed I’d made him. The rest of the years we had him he never had such a severe case of pain and we tried to make his senior years as comfortable and loved as we could. He eventually came to us to be held but not cuddled. Finally he went into the woods and never came back. I wish he had allowed us to hold his paw as he went into that dark night but he left us as quietly as he entered our lives. This was 40 years ago and I still wish I could get my hands (or boot) on whoever neglected him to such pain.

I had a Sphynx kitten who broke her left hind leg, and I took her to my vet immediately. She was chasing her brother, and jumped off a stair after him, 6 feet up. He was OK; she landed badly. Her leg swelled up right away, and she couldn't put any weight on it. She had surgery on it the next day, and was also spayed the same time. She also had hardware in her leg. I adopted her out to a loving family who enjoyed her company for nearly 20 years. (Jan Griffiths).

I can never fathom why owners neglect to get urgent treatment for their pets. I’ve found several vets over the years who have been willing to meet me in the middle so to speak when it comes to paying for sudden urgent veterinary treatment. Because I obviously love my pets and desperately want to help them, the vet has usually allowed me to pay the bill in instalments. At the end of the day it’s the pets welfare that matters most. I’ve had the same vets for 30+ years now and I can’t fault their compassion for pets and their owners.❤️

I wish veterinary care was less expensive. I understand that the vets, the staff and the hospital all need to make money but many owners can’t take their pets to the vet so the pet ends up in a lot of pain, has an incurable illness or needs to be surrendered. Many can’t take care of their own medical bills. I’ve spend thousands and thousands on my dogs and it’s not easy. I have insurance but it won’t cover pre existing conditions. So if you adopt a pet with pre existing conditions and you purchase insurance they won’t even be covered. It’s difficult all around

Thank goodness for Dr Andrew. It makes me so mad that people just adopt a dog or cat and think that’s the end of it. Vet care is a huge part of owning a pet. How irresponsible to allow that poor little dog go that long like that. If I add up all the monies we spent on our dog it would be close to 100k. All vet visits and a surgery to remove a tumor and her lung. That alone cost 12k Good luck Lexi

💯 I have 2 one year old labs and wow have I spent more money on them than my 9 year old son. Between vet costs, food and training classes. It has been thousands of dollars. But they are so worth it. Once you have a pet, that pet is your responsibility, their health is in your hands. Can’t imagine leaving one of my dogs with a broken leg for that long. I’m sure she could of taken the dog in that same day and say hey I love my dog but I can’t afford surgery, maybe they could of set up a payment plan or something. But then again lexy wouldn’t have the wonderful home she has now.

Our pup Wicket had a similar issue in his first year. We noticed he was limping one day and when we took him to the vet, they found out that he had a fracture close to his elbow that had healed poorly and pulling his elbow out of place like what you see here. Luckily, they were able to do a relatively simple procedure to move the elbow into the proper position and let it heal. Wicket’s leg is about an inch shorter now but we were informed that another surgery could fix that later down the line (he’s a bit too hyper now to safely get it done). I’m not sure how long his leg was originally broken, but the vet never let me feel bad for initially missing it. Dogs don’t always feel or show pain the same way humans do. We only thought something was up when we saw visible limping in him. In which case, we immediately made an appointment for him. I can’t imagine waiting six weeks on a limp.
