They SAY that it's not the factor that the victimhood zealots claim it is. There's a distinction there which is not even subtle. @@Deb.-. l tend to agree. But let fairness prevail: the other person had no hand in the creation of the series, and tried to adapt it, with what unfortunate results we know. To continue, Stephen was young when John Lloyd and he founded the series, S. Toksvig something older and less imaginative when she attempted to continue it. These are just two points in mitigation of Toksvig's poor show (ha!-accidental) and others exist, but the truth remains: no-one could have replaced Stephen.

Cromwell was something we might cover if you elected to do history (like at A-level) but the whole protestant/catholic thing is too complex a subject for general history. I expect the government didn't think people should debate it due to the Northern Ireland situation. All I remember from history was a lot about migration, agriculture, industrial revolution, diseases and medical discoveries, and slavery = bad.

The insurance company plaques on houses is, or should be here in rural Tennessee. The next county over, from where I live, in rural Tennessee, they separated the fire dept. taxes from the county taxes, so if there's a fire and they send firemen to your burning house, if you didn't pay the fire tax, but your neighbor did, they'll watch yours burn and protect your neighbor's house. It happened a year or two before I moved down here in 2016. There are a lot of mobile homes around here and the fire dept. would never reach them in time to save them anyways.

Pass three and you're down to 721000. Four leaves 648000 and the fifth 584010. So five successive decimations wouldn't kill 50% of your initial population.

The expression isn't "shagging the dog" - especially since Shag isn't a Canadian or American phrase. Although it may have be rephrased in her case. While the phrasing may be understandable, she got the definition of the saying wrong. The expression is "You Really Screwed the Pooch on That One" or shortened to "Screwed the Pooch" which means making a huge inexcusable mistake - typically by not paying enough attention to what you were doing. It isn't about not working hard - it's about making a massive mistake. It's funny seeing weird spins on expressions, or how saying the same thing in different words doesn't sound right. Like how "We have no time to stand around looking pretty" is not the same as "This isn't the time for being sexy doing nothing"

Shagging fly balls is absolutely an American idiom. And, for our British friends, I’m just going to leave it there with no explanation.

@jennifertselentis4755 No, it's in common usage. I've never thought about it before, everyone just says it when they're doing nothing.

I don't understand how the Ouija sales dropped in 1972 and the Exorcist didn't premiere until 1973.

We say shag it in Newfoundland. Katherine is from Sarnia. You might want to explore outside of Ontario once in a while. And it's spelled "Wales".

There's only the one David. Try using the apostrophe in the contraction of David is (David's) so it isn't the plural!

That chainsaw thing - why didn't they just do a caesarian? Julius Caesar was said to have been born that way - hence the name of the procedure - so it was certainly known about in the 1700's. Though, come to think of it, I think his mum had already died, so she wouldn't have objected much. Shakespeare lived round about then, and in his play Macbeth, Macduff says : Despair thy charm, And let the angel whom thou still hast served Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb Untimely ripped. ... so if Shakespeare knew about it, it was probably common knowledge.

So, its sophomore year. We're all high on pot, or maybe not, doesnt matter, about 8 of us in a dark dorm room, with 4 of us sitting around a piece of paper, that had a to z, and 0 to 9, written down, and a coin in the centre. One of the guys asked a question, and it didnt work, the other guy asked a question and apparently the coin moved on its own but the answer was wrong, then another guy gave it a go, and the coin moved apparently on its own again and gave him the right answer. Finally when it was my turn, I kind of felt it was rigged and that one of them was moving it around, so i lay flat on my belly with my head tilted sideways facing the paper and eyeing the coin, and went ahead and asked a question, the answer to which no one in the room but I knew, and to my utter shock, our fingers hovered over the coin as it gently traversed across the paper mapping out the right answer. Cant believe it, right? Neither could we. But, the most fascinating thing is I had the same explanation that Stephen said the originators did, that it was a way through which one themselves communicates the information through some extra dimension, and that the force was strong with me and one of my mates.
