Racial Segregation and Concentrated Poverty: The History of Housing in Black America

On Jan. 26, 2021, President Joe Biden signed four executive orders designed to address racial equity in the United States. With one particular action Biden hopes to right the historical wrongs Black folks have faced when it comes to housing and homeownership in this country.
Per a White House statement, “He will direct the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to take steps necessary to redress racially discriminatory federal housing policies that have contributed to wealth inequality for generations.”
And that’s why the story of what housing and other living conditions look like for many Black Americans is pretty bleak. It’s by design.

In the 70's... we had a clinic, recreation center, ymca, salvation army, grocery store, & a small library; right in the community 😊those were good times, even though we were poor... by the mid 80's all those facilities were gone & replaced with a police station & crack 🥺

I am not from here. But in my country we read America History in class. this isn't what we learned. We read that America is a place of freedom, equality, and justice. I'm so heartbroken. How could a country claim to be good and moral yet they mistreat their most vulnerable citizens.

Lana, Your point is absolutely true! Many don’t realize (back in the mid 20th Century) America made it appear IT was a place of freedom and equality for ALL. You could even tie that in to the false/misleading term “all men are created equal” via the constitution. However, in-reality, that statement and false projection of societal equity has ALWAYS been tied into something few connect: The origin and construction of whiteness + christian identity…

The highway will not create a ghetto. A people so shallow to believe imminent domain laws only impact black neighborhoods? Ghettos are created by CULTURE! Not highways. Not Trump and Republicans but culture. To create a ghetto all you have to do is put lower income blacks and those on public assistance together. No matter where you move this demographic of people ghettos emerge. Tell the truth. You have witnessed it. We hate for white folks to talk about it but not even middle class blacks want to live in black low income communities where single motherhood is the norm. Why black people on here acting sensitive about stuff we is true is beyond me.

To make a difference, blacks should ban hip hop, make kids pull their pants up, stop tolerating disrespect from kids at home, school, or anywhere they go. Stop watching Mad TV, Wives of LA, South Park, Empire, and gansta rap videos. Next, stop giving kids with D's and F's cell phones. Limit time spent on social media. Never kids friends in your house with the parents permission. Stopping buy them stuff we cannot afford but give chores to earn money. I'll give you a few reasons, 1st, I was raised by a single mother and am perfectly normal (except of my love of pokemon). 2nd, there is no way to force the men to stay, it is usually them that run away from the responsibility. 3rd, depending on the man, the kid may be better off without them. So the feds can't be trusted. Well you been voting Democrat for years and now Biden is in office. How is that working? Didn't the god Obama train him well? I’m white, conservative leaning with notes of left, and am constantly BLOWN AWAY by people who don’t know this history. I was born in the 60’s and knew people who lived in the projects, visited friends in the projects, and always wondered why is was full of Black Americans. Now I get it: American made slavery illegal, but then turned around and made it illegal to be black. When others say “Look at the immigrants who come here with nothing and do so well…” I have to point out that there was an expectation that we’d take care of our own first. Sure some people make it out of poverty, but only Black Americans were “legally” deprived of prosperity by their own government. No, it’s not rounding up and entire race and exterminating them, but it’s still unconscionable. Even our precious suburbs are racists, but most Americans don’t see that. Biden is doing what he can to start change, but the truth is that UKposts which giving Americans the platform they need to bring these injustices to light. If you think about, outside of the pilgrims, and a few others, most Americans have a history, which is much shorter in this country than that of African-Americans. Definitely something to think about.

American laws even forbid interracial marriages, blacks weren’t allowed to own/buy their own homes and businesses, and had to take literacy and pay poll taxes just to vote. Even though slavery was illegal the Jim Crow era was a horrible time to be black. Keep in mind segregation was horrible, redlining against blacks existed in every form of institutionalization such as housing, banks, jobs, etc..most fell back into debt with sharecropping

We used to encounter racial people from time to time. That's when the two of us would give it right back to them. My buddy would tell me a racist joke about white folk and I would tell him a black joke and we would laugh like we were busting a gut. The others didn't know what to think they would walk away. He had my back and I had his. We were brothers and we trusted each other. Neither one of us believed in the racial crap. It's a matter of the heart. Most folks could care less what color anyone is. We all , red, yellow, black and white, know better. Any time we hear a political person talk about color we need to give back to them and trust each other. That's how we did it and it brought change in our school not all but people's heart changed. Stand on what's written in Webster's dictionary. Avoid people who promote racism. I have experienced rasism from a black person, so it does go both ways. I lived in a neighborhood as a kid that the Kkk used to be in a parade down main st. During other holiday parades. West coconut grove was all black until about 5 years ago… it’s being gentrified as We post… I went there yesterday and they put up a visitor center that says absolutely nothing about Coconut Grove which is the oldest settled part of Miami and was settled by Black people. There were no black faces, though they claim to explain the history verbally they have pamphlets about everywhere else except Miami or Coconut Grove which is actually where the City Hall sits ,it’s strange. I grew up there and I raised my children there I no longer live there. It looks very European, there is almost nothing left of the culture that started the place that everyone claim to love so much. When I asked questions I was immediately assumed to live in the West Grove because of my passion for the information that they did not have and were not sharing( it looks like someone stole it and is being an imposter). Originally, Coconut Grove was started by Haitians, then black Bahamians settled and cleared it and then the white Bahamians came over and moved in… They allow most historical buildings to implode on themselves, rather than to deem them historical landmarks and discuss the history.

"Ghetto" has an earlier history in Europe where Jews were forced to live. "Ghet" is Yiddish for "separation." Ghetto is where Italians forced Jews to live, called shtetl in German and Eastern Europe areas. The name was transferred to Black neighborhoods after it was picked up from Jews and Italians in New York, where they were also segregated in places like the Bowery, in Manhattan. Robert Moses designed the highways that destroyed the Bronx, which was Italian and Jewish before it was Black and Dominican. The Bronx was thriving before the highways cut up neighborhoods and by-passed them with no exits.

Blk folks sound like racist/prejudice wyte folks when they assult others for staying in those communities when in fact the majority living there are retired/working class law abiding citizens with a sprinkle of degenerates that need love.

Wow, this is exactly what happened where I’m from in syracuse, ny. In the 60’s there was a predominantly black community in what was known as the 15th ward that was completely bulldozed to build a highway, a jail, a hospital directly behind one that already existed, and right next to those highways are public housing communities built right after the bulldoxzing of the 15th ward in the 1970’s. Practically all of African American history from the first of our people who came here escaping the south was erased. We came here with nothing and built our own schools, doctors, barbershops, grocery stores, churches, and it was all wiped out for “urban renewal”. Ironically 50 years later we are facing the same problem. They are now talking about wiping out those same public housing communities as part of gentrification, turns out that highway that wiped out hundreds of years of African American history only lasts 50 years. Now hundreds of people are once again at risk of homelessness and having to relocate, if they’re lucky since they’ve slowly been raising rent prices in our neighborhoods, and paler richer faces have slowly been popping up as we get kicked out. History doesn’t change, it only repeats itself.

I've even seen adults that live in my block throw beer cans and fast food containers out car windows as they pass my house. Some Black folks have NO Pride in how neighborhood looks at all.

Talk about Critical Race Theory. This video captures the history that so many people in this country, i.e. republicans, don't want you to hear. There is a reason ghettos exist to this day. They were created by racist policies at every level of government and social culture. Thank you for this video. Everyone should remember it the next time they are faced with the "whitewashing" of American history where ghettos just exist because of some "character deficiencies" in black people. Government policies and racism created those ghettos. Never forget.

@@thicpancakes4673 critical race theory is racist so no I would never advocate for it but I think something should be done about the way our government likes to keep our black communities down by keeping them dependent on the government by giving them just enough to get by. Black kids in these communities are not graduating highschool due to terrible educational opportunities in these areas, as well as getting into crime. The culture also glamorizes selling drugs and killing so that definitely is a part of the problem as well. If you really want to go there we can go there. The parties never switched if you do your research and look at the officials of that time they never switched. The “dirty democrats” are literally the ones who introduced crack, planned parenthood, government housing (projects) ect. I will continue to believe democrats are the racist ones by keeping poor black people dependent on them and barely giving them enough to get by and making them feel like victims just so they get their votes. If it were up to me I’d want to tear down government housing, stop giving so much government subsidies to these communities, take our education in inner cities a lot more seriously, and up lift poor black communities by educating them on becoming successful through hard work and even building their own businesses, and creating their own black owned communities once again which is what was happening before the democrats couldn’t stand it and turned it all to government housing and got everybody hooked on crack and spread aids. At one point in time black communities were thriving and expanding and we’re safe but that all changed once the crack and aids were introduced now democrats use a “victimization mentality” to get votes from poor black people when THEY WERE THE ONES THAT DID IT TO THEM. Master manipulators. And if you’ve made it this far I don’t like republicans either, I just agree with conservative policies regarding economics and social issues. The political parties are a shitfest and taking sides to argue all day about is silly. But I do know that democrats hate black people and it’s going to be hard to change my mind.
@iamkesha.
@iamkesha. 2 роки тому
You forgot to mention the racist policies were implemented by racist Dems and is still maintained today by Dems. Why would politicians accept millions of dollars for those communities but pocket most it instead of use it to help those communities? It’s profitable to keep people in bondage, in the hood, than to educate them, teach them financial literacy and help them. When communities learn and grow independently and no longer need government help, politicians become useless and loses the control to say vote for me so they can help you.
