Brought a little tear to my eye. brought back my marching out parade at RAF Swinderby in 1969 and being very tall I was right guard so my platoon and the two behind me, were all dependent on me keeping a straight line, but someone had parked a van, so I could not see the corner of the hanger my drill instructor had told me to line up with a white pole and a flag for that very purpose. By the time we got to where he halted us, I had swung the whole squadron about 3 metres to the right. I will never forget his swearing and cursing me under his breath as we stood to attention. Thankfully, after boot camp, I can't really recall the 5 years I stayed in, ever having to march like that again. Good thing I did not join the 'Rock Apes' i.e. these RAF Regiment guys were very good, especially it was not on a flat and wide parade ground but in a confined space, with the public having to be controlled and it was quite noisy. Like me using the corner of a hanger to march straight, their timing provided by the music as one unit has to be absolutely perfect. If just one of them makes a mistake (as I did) it can put the rest of the sequence out of order, so they would have practised that routine many times over and not where they actually did it. I was crap at marching but seeing those young men being that good, made me feel very proud to have served in the RAF which greatly changed me for the better and that we still have young people who felt as I did, wanted to defend our country. Back in my days the adverts' said "Join for the sport, comradeship and adventure" but my recruiting officer did not make it very clear, it was a job you may have to put your life on the line for. As an Aerial Photographic Operator was tasked one day to be sitting with my legs hanging out of a Success helicopter, with a great big camera strapped to my chest, which had been used in WW2. I had to press a button to film us passing by bushes on a cliff face in Cyprus that might be hiding Turkish Cypriot arms caches. To my absolute horror, found a machine gun firing at the helicopter I was in, I literally shat my self and was so grateful the pilot pulled off and we went back to Akrotiri airport. My point all those young men now, do not have the soft job I mainly had, which was processing and printing aerial photos back in England. They will be guarding RAF personnel, equipment and planes that often can now be in obscure parts of the world where they will be facing non-regular military personnel i.e. terrorists. That very high level of marching display showed so well they can work together in a very efficient way. All my respect and admiration.

I was an obvious whooops as he was 57 when I was born (quite a remarkable chap hahaa) he sadly died in my arms when I was 15 just before his 72nd birthday! This event would have given him hope our future still holds proud young men and women I’m absolutely certain and I don’t mind admitting I’ve shed a tear watching it and I’m now 47 hahaa :-) what a very proud display right :-)

Bless accept my deepest regrets on the loss of your father. He and many others of his generations faced unparalleled and unimaginable horror in order to keep the world safe. We living can never thank him and his comrades for all they gave to protect us.

When I was doing my trade training (Supp-A) at RAF Hereford in summer 1973, we had quite a lot of parades & high-ranking visitors. The music we marched to was provided by the RAF Apprentices band. They could play 2 tunes. The RAF march and I'll Haily & The Comets' Rock Around the Clock. Yes, that song IS a march! 😂😂

Thanx for this nice vid. Well done drills by RAF men. I like their blue-grey uniforms, in fact our own Uruguayan air force (FAU) men sport same colour --and most air forces do so elsewhere. Saludos!
