The social media era and the Australian media have blown this guy up into something he never was. Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Nalbandian, Verdasco, Tsonga were all underachievers, all talented. It works though, don’t need to criticise it. Nadal has an unusual technique, yet it works for him.

28:48 seems effective to me. The issue isn't the technique, its the player. Kyrgios's forehand technique is more than capable of outputting enough quality to beat nadal, but Kyrgios himself struggles to output that quality for an extended period of time. To be fair to him, he played a very long match against khachanov the match before and he was likely tired. We can see at 28:48 though, what happens when he really puts in that effort. His footwork was great and his preparation super early on every one of these shots. the results were world class. not everyone can approach every point with this kind of intensity though. this is what makes dominic thiem so good.
