What the modern day reboot fails to capture is that back then, the crime / murder rate was several times worse. I don't mean "several times" figuratively, I mean it statistically. Chicagoans offing 300 people in a year was considered a slow summer 40 years ago. This was before the concealed carry movement. Kearsey picking up a gun and carrying it was basically outrageous and unheard of. This was before stop and frisk. The police in the big cities were less effective than the French Underground Resistance in WW2. No one was doing anything about it. My father, who saw the first screening of Death Wish in theaters said that when the credits rolled, people stood up, clapped and cheered. In liberal New York of the 1970's, people were ecstatic at the mere thought of someone fighting back against crime.
@alucard6245 років тому
Agreed. It was a much different time back then, and ironically the original Death Wish was really more about being AGAINST vigilantism. The scene where Kersey throws up after he killed someone for the first time was pretty realistic.

And in defense of Bruce Willis, whom I absolutely love, it took a lot of guts for a mainstream actor to make a movie like this in 2018. When Mel Gibson was casting the lead for "The Passion of the Christ", it is rumored that Gibson warned the actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus Christ in the movie, that if he took the role he might never work in Hollywood again. Gibson was correct because this actor has gotten very few roles since appearing in that movie. Hollywood hates people who have ideas it disagrees with, and Bruce Willis may have hurt his future film career with the making of this movie. With that you must give him much credit. I respect Bruce Willis for having the guts to make a move like this in today's political environment. Thanks for the film review RazorFist!
@BarbarellaAlpha5 років тому
Yeah. I think Bruce is above doing remakes but then he is the only actor I know that would make a film like this in this political climate. Willis dont give a fcuk about that nonsense, he is all about the movies, not the ideologue politics.
@alucard6245 років тому
Besides that, he's at a point in his career where he CAN in fact do what he wants regardless of the potential consequences.
@woodheat4115 років тому
Jim Caviezel is brilliant in Person of Interest. All five seasons now available for streaming, commercial free.
@_XR40_5 років тому
"...at a point in his career where he CAN..." You might think so, but the fact is that Mel Gibson was the hottest property in Hollywood when he decided to do _Passion of the Christ._ Everyone (mostly) instantly turned on him and even tried to sabotage him. It took him years to get the film made and effectively ruined his career. M. Night Shyamalan was being touted as a "genius" until he made a movie (with Gibson) whose _plot_ was about alien invasion but whose _story_ was about spiritual redemption, called _Signs._ -- After that, everyone instantly denigrated him as a worthless hack...

But Gibson laughed all the way to the bank and the money is still rolling in from that film. Hollywood was kicking itself for that one.

Very useful. I generally avoid recent remakes, since they seem to be more concerned with _politically-correcting_ than making a decent movie. The original Manchurian Candidate was about a communist plot, so the remake had to have a right-wing plot. Magnificent Seven was about Cowboys helping Latino villagers against Mexican bandits - So naturally the remake has a diversity-squad fighting an evil rich white guy. Good to know I could watch this without getting _too_ pissed off (Is it too late to try to clone Bronson?).

Don't gun owners preach about how gun laws DON'T stop bad guys from acquiring outlawed guns?
@BadassSalmon5 років тому
@Bearistopheles Yeahp. The movie poorly communicates enough time passed for the 3 day wait period to get a gun considering he supposedly got them on the day his daughter got out of the hospital. It also didn't show him going to the mandatory safety class. The editing is confusing too. Kersey's daughter gets out of the hospital, he goes to the gun store the same day right after that to get the guns, then he's at home having dinner with his brother and daughter, his brother leaves, then the final break-in scene happens. The movie very poorly conveys 3 days passed, much less 6+ months for all of the ATF tax stamp shit. Oh and post '86 full autos are legal.... If you're a manufacturer, military, police, or a class 3 licensed FFL dealer. Look up post 86' dealer samples. It's still illegal for civilians to own full auto post samples-- even if you if were a dealer and your license expired, you would have to destroy or sell/relinquish them to another dealer or manufacturer. If you're ever wondering how people like FPS Russia were getting so many automatics to shoot, it's because they either are a dealer or know a dealer. I'm more lenient about the bad guys in Death Wish showing up with full autos since you can hand wave it with "oh it was stolen" or "it was illegally converted" or something. But Kersey magically pulling out out a ~completely legal~ full auto SBR that the cops had no problem with was groan inducing. Apparently Kersey spent another 2+ months plus a $500 tax to become a dealer, and some manufacturer randomly decided this new dealer operating out of his house is worth selling a post sample full auto to. It's not a major criticism the hoi polloi would care about, but as someone who actually knows what the laws are, it definitely put another dent in the movie that didn't need to be there.

I could handwave the therapy scene in the film as Willis' character throwing off suspicion that he's going on a vendetta by making it look like he's trying more "healthy" (read: pussified) coping methods, because if there's anything we all know about big city PDs in Democrat strongholds, there's a Simpsons truism that describes them all to a T: "they're powerless to help you, but not to punish you", so it's best to keep the heat off however one can.

Fuck it, I'm going to own it. I started laughing then went "Fuck! He got me. I'm pathetic. Well done, Razor." for knowing what hentai was playing during the funeral scene.

This movie completely missed the ethos of the original Death Wish. That film wasn't highlighting the glorification of "balls to the wall" gun violence and gore (that's for the obligatory sequels lol), it was highlighting a man's personal journey behind sorting his ethics whether being a vigilante hell bent on bloodshed taking his anger out on any lay criminal, a simple man who ought to uphold his human right to self defense, or remain the same man that he always was in the name of "civility". This garbage fire was a cheap copy where the protagonist sees a guy shoot a dead animal and goes on a Gung-ho revenge rampage seeking out trouble (rather than letting trouble find him, as with the original). This reboot is essentially Death Wish with elements of I Spit On Your Grave spliced into it.

Its still a good movie in this year of soy

It's probably best compared to the second film than the first. In that one Bronson (like Willis) actually hunts down the shitheels who set him on that path to begin with.
@mad4song015 років тому
@@ingold1470 Yeah, but still doesn't catch them though, and to add salt to the wounds, many more of his loved ones still end up dying.

*I haven't seeen a firearms ad since the late 1970s. I suspect they were somehow outlawed, like cigarette ads.*
