Let's take a Raspberry Pi Zero and turn it into a networked, night-vision security camera, shall we?
Have fun,

It is really cool to see other software that people are using with their RasPi Zero Camera Setups. I have been using mostly RPi_Cam_Web_Interface and I wonder what the quality differences would be between the two systems.

Really cool tutorial, so many ideas. I installed a CCTV system (industrial looking beast) but next place tempted to go down this route as more flexible and lower power. Frame rate a bit low but where needed higher, like for entrance, could use bigger pi. Think most improvements would be from printing custom cases, maybe spread the electronics out (with heat sinks) as well. Could have pi and camera in separate housing joined with that long cable. Embedded LED and sensor would be cool but power hungry.

I think it supports higher framerates you just need to set it up. I set my raspberry pi 2 to 20 fps and works perfectly fine. By default the settings are very conservative to conserve disk space and bandwidth.

Outstanding tutorial video. Perfect for monitoring my wild bird feeder and running opencv against identifying the birds. Also helpful to help with identifying what animals visit my garden. I know a fox keeps playing with our rubber garden shoes, as they are not by the door each morning and have teeth marks all over them lol but never managed to video it happening. Thanks.

Hey, thank you so much for explaining all of the setup and even more! This was so helpful. I am a total beginner and this helped a lot. I just wanted to ask you if you would be willing to try an uv pass filter on any of those cameras? I saw a thread on a forum where a guy used one of these pi noir camera with an uv pass filter and it turned it turned it into an uv camera that could see sunscreen! (shows up as black). It was so cool and that would be my goal to do. I would be so thankful if you could try that? Are you interested? It is so cool, and you could also use the camera to take uv photographs! Thank you....

@dougcox835
@dougcox835 5 років тому
You asked for suggestions. I did a similar project with a regular pi. Same thing basically. My major issue is that it needs to be connected to an outlet. Bought a battery about the same size as the pi an it will go for about 18 hours on a charge. Not practical for daily use but portable. Which brings up another problem. What if you want to take it outside of your network? Simple. Just buy a large SD card and record on board. Of course if it is not on a network it won't notify you but still useful for something like a game camera to catch the pesky critters or trespassers. I don't know how to get sound though. Others have commented on the music. Just turn it down to the point where it's not really noticeable.
@PacmansRevenge
@PacmansRevenge 5 років тому
Thanks for the suggestion on the background music. 18h on a battery is not bad at all. I wonder if you could extend it a bit by underclocking the Pi, and maybe switching off WiFi and other unneeded features. I thought about sound recording too. You could cook up a custom solution with a cheap microphone, and an ADC with I2C or SPI interface, but convenience would demand a pre-made product. I am personally curious about this one: fe-pi.com/products/fe-pi-audio-z-v2 . A couple of custom script could be used to trigger the camera upon motion detection and/or sound.

@PacmansRevenge

@24SevenMarketing
@24SevenMarketing 5 років тому
@@nalindakahettiarachchi8807 unfortunately the application I am thinking about does not have any available power source... so plugging in isn't an option. I saw one camera that would operate for up to a year on battery but it had to be tied into a specific monitoring service so that wouldn't work.

Great video ... what did all the components cost you ... and how long did it take to fully assemble the camera?
@naoki95957
@naoki95957 5 років тому
A pi zero is $10, a case is probably $3-7ish, an SD card is $5-10, and a pi Camera is $25 w/ or w/out the IR filter. $3-5 for the camera cable that fits into the pi zero. A decent IR lamp is $20. Expect to pay about $65+ per pi zero camera. Connecting the camera, while not a race, can be done in seconds. You pull the tab on the board, insert the camera cable, and push the tab closed. You'll wanna format the SD card and edit a file to have your wifi information prior to booting due to the pi zero not having a RJ45 ethernet port. You'll need micro-usb to power the pi zero at the standard 5V and consumption seems to be about 1.5W so anything at or above 300ma and you're good.
@PacmansRevenge
@PacmansRevenge 5 років тому
That's exactly correct.

@@naoki95957 thanks for all the feedback... is the 1.5 watts a constant value... or does the system need more power while recording/sending video snd a much lower power draw while in standby mode waiting for motion detection to activate recording? Very helpful explanation, thanks. Beginers can practice. But i find that raspberry power is very poor to make really "life" video surveillance system. Freezing on low fps is really sad... Maybe it is good for someone (3-5 fps) but not for me... So i can't say that all this is perfect... Even not good... And if compare to low cost ip cameras - this solution is not so cheap. It is very simple to find and buy ip camera (POE-powered) from 20$ and it will provide two streams (main with full quality for recordinf and extra for real-time life view) so, raspberry it is only like a toy to practice in iot and integration.

There's an easier way of sending SMS notifications. All you have to do is add another address to the list of emails that get motion notifications. Most mobile providers have their own suffix you can use to SMS via email. For sprint it's @messaging.sprintpcs.com, so all you'd have to do to get an email notification is add [your mobile number]@messaging.sprintpcs.com to the email list and BOOM, text notifications.

You'd be able to use port forwarding or, if your router supports it, a VPN to access your system. Using a VPN would probably be a better idea

You show this build with Pi Zero Ws running the remote cameras, but they really aren't powerful enough to be useful in this role. In the video you can see that you are getting 4 fps or less off the remote cameras. That really isn't usable video for security purposes...

Yes...I'm here because I need a cam to check my dog, not for thieves. Eventually I have to defend thieves from my dog . Poor little thieves!! 😅

I would like to have 4 cameras, angled from above, focused on one point, to aid me in soldering. I am as blind and clumsy as Mr, Magoo!

You need a Trinocular Stereo Microscope, They're not cheap, about $300 but would be a lot better than cameras. There are USB microscopes but I wouldn't get that, it's awkward soldering with them, looking at a screen while soldering. Those Stereo Microscopes are especially made for soldering SMD.

You need to add a file to the usb card before booting the Pi Zero W. Follow these instructions core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/raspberry-pi-zerow-headless-wifi-setup.html

Can you give a link to the UV lamp

www.amazon.it/dp/B00AAZRYD6/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_t-5GAbHVXG54W This lamp requires a 12V power supply I reused from another project. If you want to shop around, know that any infrared (IR) lamp, or infrared LED will work with the NoIR camera for the Raspberry Pi. A lamp like the one I used in this project can easily illuminate a 30 square meters room.

Great video! Annoying music though. But great video otherwise. I’m hoping to set up a solution like this at home - could hopefully get better framerate. Thanks for sharing!!
