OK, I took French all through Middle School, High School and College and I always did well with reading and writing; however, my conversational French is abysmal! I could never touch Timothee’s French... My wife and I went to Paris for our 30th Anniversary and we could read the signs and menus, but we were somewhat embarrassed to speak it. When we did, we found Parisians grateful that we tried and they were much more helpful and sympathetic to our pathetic French. I would love to live to France and fully immerse myself in the language and the culture!

When you are bilingual, it depends on which language has been the last on you heard, how nervous you are etc. If you dont really live steadily in one place, both languages mix, exactly the way it happens here. If he stayed for six month straight in France, he wouldnt be american on certain words, ... and would sound french on certain words back in the States. It depends on which language you are thinkind in, dreaming in at that time...

As a bilingual who grew up in the UK with French-speaking parents, I can confirm that this is pretty much what we sound like! Some Frenglish sneaks in every now and then, there's the slight accent, trouble with masc and fem words and fillers such as "okay" and "alright" are common. His mannerisms are near-identical to mine as well it's nearly creepy! The one thing I can't do that he does well is the quick switch from French to English pronunciation like when he says the name of an American actor mid-sentence. I would stick with the French pronunciation because, otherwise, I would get a headache or I would pause mid-sentence.

What’s the challenge in second language learning after you’ve reached a level of abundant vocabulary is then structure phrases or sentences in a way that native speakers would. Often times I’ll ask myself "how would a native say it?" Because many times we transliterate our thoughts from our native language into our target language and the result comes out sounding incorrect. But thanks for this video I’ve been looking forward to it!
@thedavidguy01

Merci beaucoup ,Mademoiselle ! Quelle inspiratrice! The accent (or is it vowel placement?) of Tim is amazing - that makes him sound really French ! I was just wondering if you could also do a video of Queen Elizabeth II (or the royal family)'s French ? I think her majesty does sound professional but still has quite a strong British tone . I've heard that the Queen's English is rather 'forward' in terms of enunciation , and does one need to speak even more 'frontly' in French ?

Have you considered doing one of these videos about Kristin Scott-Thomas? As far as I know, she didn't grow up speaking French, but learned it in school then moved to Paris to work as an au pair when she was 19, and ended up more or less staying. I tried to learn french by myself since the high school, I love this country, this culture, Paris est si beau Non j'déconne, mais ceci dit, ça m'a fait plaisir d'entendre cette petite analyse. Ca fait plusieurs années que j'essaye d'avoir un vocabulaire plus riche et des prononciations plus justes Learning english has always been hard for me, because in my schools, we learned the words on the books but never really encouraged to speak it directly. Since I entered to the university, I got an english teacher which was speaking english with very bad pronounciations, but it was all on purpose. She was doing it to encourage us to speak without being embarassed by the pronounciations. After beating the embarassment, you speak more freely and train it more easely. Don't be embarassed. Also with a bad accent, we can understand you and like your efforts

It's the same with Tagalog. "Anong oras na?" becomes "Noras na?" or even " Nors na?" We also say words backwards as the French do sometimes. I am learning French so I count in French when working out. 🙂

Merci pour tes analyses elles sont pertinentes. Ça m'a permis de comprendre pas mal de choses. Je suis bilingue mais ma langue maternelle je ne la connais que grâce à mes parents. Je ne l'ai pas étudiée. Ils sont mes seuls référents et quand je vois le vocabulaire qu'utilise cet acteur je me dis qu'il doit sûrement parler français comme il l'a entendu parler par son parent français et (ses cousins, cousines et famille...). Ceci expliquant cela😉

You should do a video on Mika. I think that would be interesting because he seems to be fluent (released french music, does french interviews) but when he was on the voice other judges like Zazie use to mock his french. I was wondering if you could take us through that.

I imagine you think these kind of videos are not so useful for learning French. For someone like me it’s really useful. In theory I speak French fluently (like Chalamet’s level) but because I haven’t been living there for three years I can easily see myself making these kind of mistakes. It’s interesting to see you go into such depth.

Insults on French TV are always welcome if nobody abuses of them (otherwise it becomes rude at some point), like, makes people laugh and makes everyone more comfortable, especially the speaker. You can use them strategically to emphasize something you're speaking about or an emotion.
