That’s bullshit. Ali was not down for more than a second, no way Wepner could’ve returned to his corner and had that conversation with his manager.

@@syourke3 There is a documentary on this boxing match narrated by Wepner himself and he did say that in the doc word for word.....Check it out.

Total hype by the announcer. The "knockout" punch was more a slap on the back. And it was pretty obvious that Ali simply lost his balance. Probably because Wepner either stepped on his foot or tripped him.

@@Kermit_T_Frog Correct. And there’s no way that Wepner could have thought even for a split second that he had actually KO’d Ali who was back in his feet in a couple of seconds. Wepner was just lucky to get a nice pay day but he had no chance against Ali. Not even in his dreams.

I guess they really, really wanted to be able to say Wepner went the distance against Ali. He was only 19 seconds away. But, tough guy though he was, he could not defend himself at all. He could barely stand up.

I always wondered why Ali didn't go to the body more, it would've been easy with his opponents always worried about his lightning fast one/two combinations...probably would've shortened a lot of his fights too.

@@etcetc3800 it's actually more difficult technically to land body shots, it leaves you more vulnerable to a counter if you don't land it effectively...I'm just saying that the opportunity was there for him as his opponents were ALWAYS getting mercilessly pummeled to the face. Ali was/still is and will always be one of the people I most look up to as an example of integrity and principle, as well as the most exciting boxing champion of all time.

@@EminiMagic Man, Foreman is my favorite heavyweight of all time (with Tyson). How i forgot to mention him? Yes Foreman was a tougher opposition than Wepner just because in the 3rd round, he hir Mohammed Ali in the body with 4 or 5 hard punches that hurt Ali and an uppercut in the 7 round that dizzy Ali a bit (Ali said that after in interview). But the fight was a total missed by Foreman. He said that he was so confident that he would knock out Ali. He just charged him without thinking. I'm sure that in a rematch (circa 1976, 1977, Foreman would have TKO Ali).

Wepner should rank up there with those guys for toughness. Only Chuvalo took a punch better than Wepner.

Chuck was no where near any of Ali’s hardest fights! Chuck doesn’t hold a candle against..Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, George Forman. I see this fight as no more than a workout with Chuck being the punching bag! Chuck should’ve built punching bags, and called them Chucks’ guaranteed to withstand 15 rounds of Training.

@@youtoo2233 You could hear the thud and see it land properly on the ribs. It was a deep enough shot to knock down Ali whose balance was a little off while moving backwards. He didn't expect it and accepted the fact. He won anyway but this was a wake up moment for the champ.

@@Charismaniac if you look at the replay at that right angle you can see that Ali was falling backwards before the punch even landed and if the punch did anything it didn't hurt Ali it just might have knocked him off balance as he was already falling backwards anyway. And think about it there's no way Chuck wepner is going to legitimately knock Ali down with a body punch when all the biggest punchers of all time couldn't floor Ali with body punches. Them ruling it a knock down really pissed Ali off and he made Wepner pay for it for the rest of the fight, the man took a huge beating and got knocked out in the last round

@@Charismaniac no watch extremely close and Ali is already falling backwards as the punch is landing. I'm amazed how many people really think Wepner hurt Ali. Also if you research it there are photos of wepner standing on Ali's foot which is what caused Ali start to fall and then the force of the punch made Ali fall down all the way but it's not like Ali got hurt so much from being punched by Wepner then actually made him fall down because he was hurt in terrible agony. People really actually think wepner hurt Ali terribly bad to the point Ali was almost knocked out. Crazy
