Incredible work man, wish these were really in every local grocery store. The atlas devices winch is very cool too and being commercially available is a plus.

I love this kind of videos where students/indie engineers build innovative tech, because it just proves how much further we could have already gone if only science industries weren't led by corporate businessmen who only care about maximum profit. Great job man!

I would have to agree that this is one of the better ones I've seen & I've seen countless Grapple guns. This is more practical & closer to Batman Style. However,even with all of the examples I've seen,there seems to still be one aspect of Batman's Grappling Hook that has yet to be tackled. That is the fact that it doesn't simply latch on to or wrap around objects,it also releases then retracts back into the gun.

Imagine a world where these become readily available and people out everywhere grappling like maniacs. That's a world I want to live in

This is awesome! One of the coolest uses of paracord we have seen to date! If the cord keeps snapping on you, one potentially simple upgrade would be to use 750 or 850 paracord instead of 550. Or if you really want to go crazy, use Dyna X which has a weight rating of 1250 lb. The diameter increase is pretty small. To anyone else reading this, paracord is not strong enough to be used as climbing rope. Use at your own risk!

Looks awesome dude, it might be an idea to modify it so that the rope and hook come in a separate cartridge, so that if you have to cut the line or if it's stuck somewhere that you can just remove the spent cartridge and replace it. Maybe incorporate the CO2 canister in the cartidge aswell.

Dislocated arm, anyone? Imagine being suspended in mid-air with your full weight hanging on a shoulder-joint that's popped out, due to a fall, or the sudden shock of being hoisted up at speed! It would be excruciating, for sure - and this is the hazard that would worry me most about using a device like this. However, I think it could be avoided, with a different design. The solution would be to use a harness rig, to which the grappling chord is attached, at the shoulders. You would still aim and fire the grapping gun by hand - but you're actually hoisted up by a harness, not by your arm. This would have another big advantage too: it would give you two free hands to work with, once you're up there where you want to be. A major problem with the arm-hoist design is that once you're at height, your hoisting arm is basically out of action - even if you haven't dislocated it! Also, with a harness rig you could reduce the weight of the device you need have strapped to your arm. All you need that component to do is to to house, aim and fire the grapping hook, so it could be quite light and compact. The heavier, bulkier winch motor and power-supply would be attached to the harness. And what's to say you couldn't have a set up with two grapping hooks - aimed and fired by your two arms? This would give you greater safety and stability - and you'd still have two free arms to work with, once you're up at height.

One improvement I would consider is extending the harness in such a way that it goes all the way to wrap around the torso/chest in some way. This design puts a tremendous amount of strain on the elbow and shoulder joints, which can potentially lead to serious injuries

Looks great so far! I will say if you want to improve it more, I would recommend that after releasing it with your fist, attaching it to your hip. While a bit more time-consuming, and not as fun, this would allow you to go more distance, and maybe quicker too as you would not have to worry about your arm getting ripped off.
