I'm glad he mentioned he got it for free. I typically avoid - infomercials. He comes off trustworthy so I kept watching. I'm new to electronics. B4 this video I was pretty confused by all the different terms - amps, volts etc. This man is so thorough and easy to understand, I have a much better comprehension of how to hook up my solar panels to an end inverter to my batteries and be many steps closer to self-sufficiency/off the grid.

Hi Jules. I always mention if it was offered to me by a company. Normally I buy or request something be sent to me for review. I have many companies trying to give me products on a weekly basis, I turn down the majority(95%).If a person likes what they see, then I include a link to support my channel, if they don't like it, don't buy it. I don't create videos for the sole purpose of selling products like many other YT channels. I'd rather have more views than product sales. I have another 3000W that was shipped by another company, I'll be making a video soon. Be sure to look over my solar and battery testing video playlists below, also share. The 24v 3Kw version is now on sale at Amazon for $265.66, so I decided to search UKposts for reviews. I have to agree, this review is very good, as good as those by Will Prowse. I believe that over time you will get more viewers. I have been aching for weeks on which pure sine wave inverter to purchase, and based on your review I am now going to pull the trigger. I will test it as you have shown (except short circuit), and if it fails I'll just send it back. As one person remarked, the makers of cheap foreign inverters leave the QA control to us, which is part of why they're cheap. I will do my part and QA it thoroughly.

I already spoke with them, and they sent a video showing a brief short circuit that worked. I have this unit. Have had it for about a year or more now. Started with 100w solar and 200ah lead acid batteries. Now I have 200w solar, 40ah li battery (soon 80) with a wanderer charge unit with temp sensor. I haven’t had any issues with the inverter, however I don’t use it for heavy loads. Just mainly charge yard batteries with it and the occasional power outage I’ll run tv, lights etc. My main weak link is the batteries which I’m slowly adding. It’s overkill for my intentions, but has been a good unit so far.

It has worked flawlessly, 24 hours a day, and I have had zero problems, averaging 10 kwh a day output. I was surprised to see it fail after a short circuit on the ac output though, i would think it would trigger the overload protection before it would fail internally.

I bought that same inverter, but in 24 volt 3000 watt in 2015. It didn’t have any vents in the cover back then. That might be why it popped one of the capacitors, I then got a 5000 watt from another company, and bought another of the first brand in 3500 watts.
@curtchase3730
@curtchase3730 3 роки тому
Excellent comprehensive tests I must say. I own a 3500W 24V version myself. Haven't blown it up.....yet. I am amazed it still "tried" to run with the overload, but only @ 98 volts or so. That is a fail. Below 108 volts is beyond standard grid tolerance. I know if I run a 1500 watt microwave, the output is around 112vac. Yes, still in spec, but I still don't like that. After watching some others review similar models, we learned that those ATC fuses are pretty much a false security. Usually the MOSFETS blow to protect the 20¢ fuse! I want to add some kind of "fuse" at the output side, but it's got to be super quick acting if there is a full on direct short like you did. Say I put a 15 amp ATC fuse inline and try to start say my circular saw and it blows. OK, kind of expect that maybe due to inrush current. BUT, say I do what you did and create a full direct short....Will the fuse blow before the inverter blows? Hmm. I DON'T really want to test that theory right now!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 3 роки тому
Anything 110v or higher is fine. Thanks for watching!
@ericklein5097
@ericklein5097 8 місяців тому
Yep the lack of proper protection on those mosfets at the input is the problem. Kinda sad because this is a great unit other than that crucial error. Almost comical that they could put blade style fuses in to protect mosfets on an inverter? Gotta wonder if any of these engineers have experience in the industry or what. Still at the price point its hard to say this isn't a good buy. In a situation where you need an inverter that won't break the bank/can be replaced from death due to handling/conditions/etc this is a great candidate. For the most part it works, has a good sine wave, and I believe they also do custom voltage ranges for those that want to run unique battery voltages like 4S lithium ion in the 12V-16.8V DC range.

Well done! I have the same unit that I purchased in April 2022. Yours showed voltage (60-ish volts AC) on ground.....you mentioned it is center-tapped. It seems there are two versions out there: an International narket version? And a US market version? My inverter is zero-volts on ground relative to either hot or neutral. The directions also state that it is OK to bond neutral to ground IN ONE LOCATION (the inverter or the load). That is critical if you will connect into power panel which has neutral BONDED WITH GROUND. Imagine what will happen if you connect up your unit (60v shorted to ground) to a bonded neutral US wired residential main load center via a transfer switch.

I respect all you guys that produce YT content, so please don't think I'm hatin' with this comment. Your hair dryer uses 412 watts according to the Kill-A-Watt meter, yet when you measured using an amp meter and a volt meter, your battery was only sending out 352 watts. You either have an inverter that produces more power than is input into it or you need to change the measuring devices that you are using. The tests for over wattage was very informative, so thanks for that.

One of the most complete reviews I have ever seen. I wonder what scerieos would occur naturally that would short the unit out? It’s a shame that it blew. Hey, at least it worked for all the tests. I tried a Renogy and it was dead out of the box. I tested a $600 harbor freight pure sine wave, it came on, ran my AC for a short period. I had 2x230 amp hour batteries so it should have run at least 2 hours. After it died, it would not come on. Returned it. It’s really hard finding an affordable inverter that is quality built. I’m going to give Renogy one more try,if this one is dead or fails, done with them on inverters, thanks

I've watched many others review/test these "Reliable" inverters. You tested other "features" that were missed by some other reviewers! I, after watching several videos, did purchase the 3500 watt, 24VDC model. It is nearly 2 years old already, and by the looks of yours here, Reliable did nothing to address it's shortcomings! Just having that floating "ground" is crazy! Mine has that too and measures 60 volts like yours. I don't use mine much either. I bought it just to play with more than anything! LOL. I tried to search for the video you said were going to post explaining what "blew up" when you crow barred the AC output. Too bad you didn't have that cool LiFe battery pack then to really test surge capacity. That one 24D thought it was cranking over a locomotive engine and it's voltage dropped to under 10.5 volts with that heavy loading on it! You may have needed like 4 of those 24D's in parallel to hold the voltage over 11 for those 200+ amps inrush currents I'd believe. All I know is mine has terrible output voltage regulation. Even with 22 volts going in (remember, I have the 24 volt model), AC drops to like 109 when running a 1000 watt microwave oven. If I was living off grid, or really had to depend on a REAL "reliable" inverter, I'd pony up for a low frequency unit, one that uses a honkin big iron transformer. They have drawbacks, but for stationary use, and near bullet proof, ya, that's the way I'd go.

@@fishhuntadventure Thank you for your comments. Thanks for the video. On one of Will Prowse's videos, he held a resister against one of the cables coming from the inverter (sorry, I don't remember which one) before touching it to the battery terminal. He said that will prevent a bad spark. The idea was to discharge all the capacitors in the inverter that stored electrical charge. By far my biggest worry here is messing up and getting a bad shock, or an exploded battery. Also: is there a rule of thumb for the sizes of the inverter output, relative to the size of battery capacity? On one RV channel on UKposts, they said that every 100 watts of load plugged into the inverter. requires 10 DC amps from the battery. Thanks again.

Either side works. Not really necessary unless you're in an explosive environment. It needs to be high wattage and maybe 50-100 ohms. An inverter pulls roughly 9A DC for every 100W AC.

Weird you came up with this one . I just purchased two of these inverters in the last two months. A 24v for me and 12v version for the mother in law. These were the only units I could find that were capable of producing what they are rated for. I've seen ZERO negative reports on these units. Would like a follow up on the unit you shorted out and failed. I would have expected internal Line Fuse to pop. Using Nissan Leaf Li Ion Cells (12ea 4P 6S) initial battery voltage of 25.00v. The Low Voltage alarm kicks in before my batteries are actually in a low voltage status. My run time is a bit short due to the way the voltages match up but works quite well. Disabling the SonAlert I can run until the unit does in fact shut down and prevents battery damage. The built in sockets are not wired for higher amp loads. Use the out board wires for anything over 12A.

You're correct! The testing was done before the unit were opened for inspection. I figured the AC receptacles and terminal block had the same size wire. You said the "built in sockets are not wired for higher amp loads." Another inverter is only 2,000 watt and on this one it has a 15 amp GFCI outlet, if you need more power, it has a terminal plate. Pretty much a dead short there...kinda like you did..so while I had that on my mind I went and ordered a 24 v 2000 w Aims inverter/charger...the thing has two GFCI outlets and the hardware connection and I thought..that's all yours needed and it woulda been okay...so I thought it might save on your fuses and things to have those...I found a coupon for 15% and got mine for $653...its a lot of bread but I figured its better than having to buy another one when I least expect it...I put a 1450 watt load on it when I use my air fryer and it just does fine..I used two #2 welding leads on each post..each one hooks to 4 batteries in series/parallel for 24 v and they don't even get warm usually although that might change in August lol

I used a pair for the eight 90 amp hour batteries, and a pair for the ten 105 amp hour ones. I just finished rewiring the battery bank with new #2 welding cable, it carries 195 amps. I have used the oven for an hour, and there was maybe a few degrees of warmth in the cables , but it was very slight and hard to feel any difference. The amps are less now because the batteries are always charged, so higher voltage, lower amps. My uncle loaned me his 2000 watts inverter, 12 volts, before I got mine...way more amp draw...that was the reason that I decided to go to 24 volts. After I got all these batteries, the voltage never goes below 25.0 volts, even after two days of no sun and constant rain. The welding cable that I used carries more amps than regular stranded wire. With 18 batteries, each one is only pulling 25 amps or so. So the batteries will last longer, and the wires stay cool...sorry if I wasn't clear earlier.

@@electronicsNmore - I disagree. First, I don't believe that fast-blow fuses exist in ATO/ATC packaging. Second, fuses can "hold" at much greater (even 100% over) than their rated current for SECONDS ! Third, over current can kill a MOSFET in microseconds. The fastest fuses take millisecond. Fourth, if one MOSFET fails, its load/current transfers to all of the other MOSFET instantaneously and overwhelm them and they all die. I have seen a lot inverters with blown up input MOSFETs. I have yet to see one where the fuse(s) blew to save the inpout MOSFETs. Designing some type of very fast electronics that would protect the input MOSFETs is probably not cost effective. think of it as a 3 wire industrial setup: there isn't really a neutral (i.e. a grounded conductor that normally carries current).
@DimitriPappas
@DimitriPappas 3 роки тому
Except maybe for some 3 phase systems which sometimes use red/blue/yellow combination to represent each hot phase, I battle to see how anyone would mistake the yellow wire as a hot wire especially on a single-phase inverter that needs to be earthed anyway. Ground/Earth is usually green/yellow. If it's not a combination of both colours (ideally), then either should still suffice. Live ought to be brown or red, and Neutral blue or black. So long as Live is represented by the presence of either brown or red, then one should immediately recognize yellow or green as ground/earth, especially if it's the odd one out. In DC systems, black usually represents negative, and red positive, and because red is often substituted with white, intuitively one would expect that the same would apply to AC systems, namely white could represent Live and Black neutral, yet in the US they use the exact opposite - black for live and white neutral, which truly boggles my mind!! As with everything, lack of standardization can be extremely frustrating and sometimes even dangerous/deadly... When in doubt, bring out the multimeter :) On a slightly different note, I'd be curious to know whether or not these Reliable inverters, which seem to have a floating neutral, would take well to bonding Neutral and Earth together? keeping Neutral and Earth unbonded could pose a safety risk as you don't really want a potential difference between them, especially if you're going to be feeding directly to your house's breaker board. Most Chinese inverter designs don't tolerate this at all as it causes a dead short. Taiwanese-made Meanwell inverters do allow it, though I'm not sure what difference in construction actually makes that possible, but I'm guessing some kind of galvanic isolation on the AC output stage. Indeed most inverters (even generators) don't ship with a bonded neutral or GFCI/RCD/ELCB breaker as there are cases where that would be undesirable..

electronicsNmore - You can’t call this a two-phase, or split-phase system, no matter how it’s configured. Also, the black ‘neutral’ and red ‘hot’ are legacy UK colors, which are no longer in use for new installations. They now follow the IEC standard, along with the rest of Europe, with brown for ‘neutral’ and blue for ‘hot’, to avoid any confusion. I also understand how they are using the ground, like the neutral between the two legs of a US residential breaker panel. However, this is just completely wrong, on so many levels. Ground is ground. The ‘ground’ on this inverter is like a neutral, with a 60 volt ‘leg’ on each side of it. The ‘ground’ wire should NEVER carry ANY current, unless there’s a fault. In my professional opinion, this inverter is just poorly designed. I would be embarrassed to design something like this. (Yes, I’m an EE.) Being that these are also made to be used outside, they’re wholly inappropriate for use with a GFCI adapter, with a 60 volt potential between hot/ground, and neutral/ground. Again, I fully understand how this inverter works, but that doesn’t mean that it’s safe, or designed well. Again, ground is ground. It should never be used as a neutral. This is just a cheap, but dangerous, way to do it. I’m almost afraid to ask which terminal, if any, is tied to the case of the inverter. We can agree to disagree, but this isn’t a matter of US vs. EU or UK standards. This is a matter of safety.

Placing a load across the meter when measuring for this would reveal what it is; just connect an incandescent light bulb to it and see if the voltage is able to be maintained at the same value. If it drops to zero, then it's just a float reading that's possible due to the high impedance of the DMM.

The best to use would be a silver containing thermal compound, but they usually don't burn up from heat. High inrush and short circuits are what destroy the mosfets.

In case anyone doesn't know the reliable inverters typically have 60v on the neutral and 60v On the hot wire to make the 120v you will get shocked on either side. And it interesting trying to wire it to a breaker box. Because even in the off position there is still 60v on neutral 😒. Many other inverters are the same👍

In order to be safe, just like 240V requires (2) single pole breakers with a common trip, you can do the same for the 120V, use 2 breakers at 60V each, of course the panel couldn't be connected in any way to your AC mains panel. Thanks for watching!
