I've used a roller with a good nap on it for staining, did a great job! Rollers for walls, good foam brushes for wood trim and baseboards. Even cheap foam brushes work great, but they may wear out faster. I painted and stained hundreds of handcrafted items of all kinds for years, people were thrilled with them. 👍👍🙂

I totally agree with you Nancy. You save time and money using thick nap rollers to paint onto rough surfaces if not using a spray machine.

Been there, done that. A brush to get in the grooves and a roller to cover everything else. Using a roller last ensures the grooves are covered completely.

Rolling it out with a nice thick nap, wide roller would really quicken the majority of the painting, then going back into the nooks and crannies with the brush. Love your videos man!

I used T111 siding for the outside of the cabin I built based on one of your previous videos, and it was seriously amazing to have a cabin that had a finished siding on it as soon as the walls were stood up. Seriously cannot thank you enough there!

15 years in my cabin and I used T1-11. Takes stain well or you can leave it natural and it ages to a dark brown.

We had black squirrels nibble at bottom edge of T-111 in multiple spots and eat it away so much, the little f*ckers exposed the base plate and a couple of studs. It was a good thing we made a trip when we did or they would've been inside. I replaced and hit the bottom edge of the T-111 and everywhere they gnawed with "Crib Halt". Animals hate it and will not chew on it. Not even mice. It's made to paint pasture fence with to keep horses and cows from chewing.

Jim Martin Dave, you sure got me with the reference to "What would Bob Ross Do? Once in a while I'll catch one of his reruns, he sure was fun to watch! Too bad we lost him. I even caught an aged Uncle watching his show a few times. I'd bet even now almost all of us who watched him and are cleaning a brush out these days (2023) think of him. Yes I frequent Menards often, it's only about 3 miles from my home. Enjoy your videos, keep it up. JimM

Don't sleep on pawn shops and online marketplaces for great, second-hand, but durable tools. I've picked up plenty.of high-end gear for cheap from guys who are either upgrading their daily drivers, or are downsizing their set, and have managed to never have any problems with hobbyist to medium-intensity use. Obviously, everyone's mileage might vary with this approach, and it never hurts to browse the shops when you are in a new town. Thanks for this video Dave!

I've been really happy with Menards. I bought a 20x30 metal building from them last year, they delivered all the pieces on 2 pallets, including every nail and screw needed to put it together. Hired a guy to put it up, and the total cost was 1/2 or 2/3 of what contractors were quoting me.

Beautiful work Mr. Dave. A handyman/painter friend give me this tip: it was to save old shoe laces for when you paint. Just coil the laces into the rim of the paint container, and by doing so, you make it possible to pour into a smaller containers. Also, it saves on the cleanup, as the lid goes back on easily when your finished. Thanks for the filmaking. Bless

I've taken the nozzle off my $15 Hudson-type sprayer (like yours) to apply thick stain, and it works like a charm. This let's you put down a line of stain and spread it with a brush, so you're not dealing with a tiny dap of stain, re-dipping, and applying another dab. Just spread the line of stain, and squirt more.

Two hints. 1) If you're using that sprayer, thin out the stain 2) To avoid blotchy color and get even cover, use a sprayer to put a clear sealant up the wood first (that at least is what they do when staining softwood furniture). That said, that is one cool cabin.

I built a 12 X 16 shed 7 years ago and used T1-11 8 OC siding. When it came to staining it, I used a 9" X 1/2" High Density fabric roller which worked great then went back with a brush for the recessed lines. It took me about 3 hours for the entire job. I could have used a HVLP sprayer I already owned but only use that for water based paints and stains. Thanks for sharing. New subscriber by the way.

For the next project with T1-11 try using a heavy nap roller. You still have to use a brush on the grooves and of course where the roller cant reach, but it speeds things up considerably.
@solarcabin
@solarcabin 11 місяців тому
I used T1-11 on my cabin and has held up well for 15 years now. It is easier to spray than to roll or brush paint or you can just leave it natural and it will age to a nice tan or brown.
@SLloyd-qb8kt
@SLloyd-qb8kt 11 місяців тому
Also, stain it before you put it up. While the T1-11 is laying flat, gravity helps the stain settle into the grooves and you don't have to reach upward or work from a ladder.
@danielboughton3624
@danielboughton3624 9 місяців тому
Spray it and if you are worried about it being blotchy or uneven then use a sanding sealer first. Spraying will give you more control and an even finish and you don't have to sweat the grooves. You can also spray the grooves first and then spray the flat surfaces to get nicer coverage in the grooves.

Good video and always good info. I have been using Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil, not inexpensive but a really great wood stain and preserver. Cabot’s has made stains for many many years. They know their products. Years ago they had creosote based stains like the stuff on railroad ties and telephone poles. Government in all their “wisdom” made them remove it but I have learned that their family of different stains now manufactured for different applications are still quite good. I always put mine on with a brush and load it up so the wood can soak up a lot. You are looking good there Dave with that stain job. Edit: I live in my cabin in the eastern WV mountains and I so agree, doing nothing is a great way to relax!

Gloves- Always choose gloves several sizes larger than you think you need. That way you can take them on and off easily. Kitchen gloves or big industrial waterproof gloves (latex or rubber) work well, too, but can be stiffer. I’d consider a cloth-covered sponge for glopping on that stain and really penetrating on the first go. They get sold specifically for staining. You can also run a sander lightly (~60 grit) over the siding before sanding for an easier, less catchy staining process. Best!

If you are a good scrounger even less and if you have an old camper all the appliances, sinks, water pump and tank work great in a small cabin. I just did a video of that system Ok, keep up the good work!

That's the exact reason I hate T111. Well, that and if it gets wet it tends to rot fast. I've tried all types of brushes, short nap rollers, thick napped rollers, etc. What I've found quickest (maybe not the best) was to take a sprayer like the one you got and thin down the stain.
