I found an abandoned WW2 bunker in my back garden. I decided to renovate it. Here is the full bunker renovation video. When I looked back at the deeds of the 110 year old farmhouse, I noticed it had been owned by a lieutenant. I'm guessing he built this bunker for his family to go inside when there was an air raid. The bunker itself was only small, and although it sits quite close to the house, it would have been much further away as the house had been extended quite a bit since ww2. I used a mixture of hand tools and power tools and decided to clear the bunker first, then seal it with specialist masonry sealant. I then built an escape ladder and folding escape hatch. Originally it was just an air vent, but that meant there was only one way in and out of the bunker. So with the escape ladder and hatch it means there are two ways to get in and out of the bunker. I build storage inside, and my Dad came along and helped build a folding bed. We also dug a sump hole to fit a pump so that if the bunker filled with rain water we could pump it out easily. Finally, I completely renovated the door as it looked like it had been left to the elements over decades. I used aluminium tread plate and bolts to secure it and protect it from the rain. Thanks for watching! Link to the full bunker series below:

In 2019 I bought a 110 year old farmhouse that had a WW2 Bunker in the back garden. I found out it was previously owned by a lieutenant from WW2. The house itself is on a hill that is only a few miles from a military base (which is still used to this day). He must have built this shelter for himself and his family. It's only small, and although it looks quite near the house, the house has been extended quite a bit since the original building from 1910. This is a video highlighting how I renovated the bunker. It is not a perfect restoration, and my aim was not to make it look like something from WW2. I wanted to put my own touch on it. As I delved further into the history of the house and the area, I found out that it was used to release barrage balloons in to the air to raise the bomber planes higher and make them an easier target for the guns on the nearby airfield to hit (if they were flying low they come across you faster and it becomes harder to hit the target). I hope you enjoy this video, and thank you for watching! The disturbing part is, there were probably 1000s of tadpoles, that grew into 100s of froglets, that matured into 10s of frogs, that eventually became one fat frog and one skinny frog doing their best to avoid his fat sibling... Wow. Great job! Underground space, even so tight can be very useful. But I personally have some safety concerns: 1. When you are inside the bunker, there is couple of tons of wet soil above your head. Only thing protecting you is a layer of 100 years old concrete of unknown thickness, and you can literally see cracks in it. And nothing was done to reinforce it (besides stuffing cracks with some putty). Seems like you are very confident in WWII lieutenant's engineering skills... 2. No ventilation. It is mandatory in any underground structure. Sadly, carbon dioxide is heavier than air and won't go out of your bunker by itself. If you plan to sleep there you need to vent this place. 3. There will be a lot of moisture getting in, and pump can't fix wet walls. Better insulation needed, as well as some drying solution. Wet walls are BAD. Besides obvious structural damage to old concrete, it may cause a lot of biological hazards. Also, I don't know why you made solid hatch cover. It was much better with roof window, much brighter and comfortable. Isn't it better to make reclining grill with transparent roofing?

Good job on the bunker so far. I think some people get confused about the size of the bunker, it's an air raid bunker, not a survival shelter. It was just meant to huddle in to wait out a bombing run, not shelter for an apocalypse or enemy invasions. You explain it in the description, but think you may need to give a little history lesson on air raid shelters in a future video. Thanks again.

My ancestral house in Basilan Philippines used to have one of these WWII bunkers. My uncle inherited the house and he used it for storage for a couple of decades until the house was renovated. At one point, it houses the house's generator in case of black outs. The story goes when Japs landed in Manila, my grandfather and his sons began to dig the bunker with some help from the neighbors. It was the biggest bunker in the local area - about half the size of the house, around100sqm, at some point during the war, it became the armory for the whole neighborhood. they stockpile weapons in there and there are holes in the front where you could lay down on your stomach and fire a gun facing the highway. It was hiding in plain sight as the bunker is directly under the house - like a makeshift basement. The bunker never saw action but there is definitely military presence. After the war, some gun owners didn't claim their guns back and my grandfather surrendered most of the weapons to the military. Some of it remained. The bunker was last used in 2001 for its true purpose during the Siege of Lamitan, they cleaned it out to make enough room for some soldiers to use it as a place to rest. My grandma cooked home made food for them. :) The bunker was filled in during major house renovations in 2010s but before that, we uncovered bunch of items, both pre and post-war era, things like: 1. Old rusty guns like pistols, shotguns, rifles (some are beyond repair due to rust) 2. Decommissioned American and Japanese hand grenades -They were put out professionally as I am told. We got rid of them. 3. Motorcycle parts - we still have them! 4. My grandfather's 1960s Honda Benly CA95 that we plan to restore - it still runs! 5. Bunch of motorcycle parts (My dad and uncle are avid motorcycle enthusiasts as do I) - we still have those parts. 6. Bunch of truck parts like differentials, engine blocks, stuff like that (my grandfather was a trucker). All 8 trucks were sold one by one for his medication of diabetes until his death in 1994 (I was 4). 7. Various 1950s Chevy sedan parts (My grandfather sold the car back in the 80s) 8. Rusty Oil drums 9. Bunch of old machetes - some are beyond repair. 10. A workbench and a huge pile of tools. My uncle still have it, he restored those tools and table. 11. Bones of small animals that decide to die there like mice, bats, lizards, etc. We got rid most of the items there that has no value and some remain in the family as a heirloom like a rusty Winchester Model 12 shotgun that now hangs over the new dinning room entrance, the Honda Benly, motorcycle parts, and a couple of WWII memorabilia.

instead of running a heater it's usually much more effective to combine this with running a fan that blows air into a relatively tight tunnel (with some plastic and tape) from the entrance to the exit. The constant renewal of the air causes humidity in floor and walls to equalize with surrounding air rather than moisture becoming suspended into the air when just heating (and subsequently condensing onto walls/floor once the temperature drops again)

Thought the same. I don't know if I'd trust the screws either. What were those, #10's? Screws don't have a huge amount of sheer strength. For a rope bridge we built, the engineer required us to bore 1" holes 6" deep into the concrete and use a special epoxy to fix the bolts in place. I also know that OSHA regulations in the States require a different shaped rung for individual rung ladders so that feet can't slide off the ends of the rung. And a counterweighted hatch.

Not true. Im an electrician and use those same 1/4" anchors all the time. Ive seen some over 10years old that still are holding. Typically its the pressure/use of whatever is anchored that makes it fail and then its usually the concrete around the anchor that will degrade. Plastic basically lasts forever.
