The irreverent letter the Cossacks wrote to the Ottoman Sultan in 1676.
Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks depicts a supposedly historical tableau, set in 1676, and based on the legend of Cossacks sending a reply to an ultimatum of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed IV. The original reply, has not survived; however, in the 1870s an amateur ethnographer from Yekaterinoslav (today Dnipro), Ya. Novitsky, found a copy made in the 18th century. He gave it to historian Dmytro Yavornytsky (1855-1940), who by chance read it to his guests, among whom was the painter Ilya Repin. Repin became curious about the story and in 1880 started the first of his studies.
Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire, also known as Cossacks of Saporog Are Drafting a Manifesto (Russian: Запорожцы пишут письмо турецкому султану).
According to the story, the Zaporozhian Cossacks (from "beyond the rapids", Ukrainian: za porohamy), inhabiting the lands around the lower Dnieper River in Ukraine, had defeated Ottoman Empire forces in battle. However, Mehmed demanded that the Cossacks submit to Ottoman rule. The Cossacks, led by Ivan Sirko, replied in an uncharacteristic manner: they wrote a letter, replete with insults and profanities. The painting exhibits the Cossacks' pleasure at striving to come up with ever more base vulgarities. During Repin's time, the Cossacks enjoyed great popular sympathy. Repin also admired them: "All that Gogol wrote about them is true! A holy people! No one in the world held so deeply freedom, equality, and fraternity."
Sultan Mehmed IV to the Zaporozhian Cossacks:
As the Sultan; son of Muhammad; brother of the sun and moon; grandson and viceroy of God; ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, Upper and Lower Egypt; emperor of emperors; sovereign of sovereigns; extraordinary knight, never defeated; steadfast guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ; trustee chosen by God Himself; the hope and comfort of Muslims; confounder and great defender of Christians - I command you, the Zaporogian Cossacks, to submit to me voluntarily and without any resistance, and to desist from troubling me with your attacks.
- Turkish Sultan Mehmed IV
The Cossacks' reply came as a stream of invective and vulgar rhymes:
Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!
O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.
Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!
So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!
- Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host

To this day many country roads in the lands of what once was Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth are long paths between two lines of regularly planted trees between the fields. Last week we drove such roads with my friends to the village, where we partied. The views are fairy tale like. Back in the days slav nobels would visit their friends, traveling that roads in a slow cart ride for months to then party like mad for weeks.

Historical accuracy aside, the reply letter in popular culture is entertaining. Paraphrasing the numerous titles of the ruler of the Sublime Porte, the cossacks address the letter to "accursed Sultan, satan and serpent of the world and brother of the Devil, shoe merchant of Stambul, winegrower of greater and lesser Egypt, cook of Babylon and barrel maker of Assyria, pederast of Mecca and perfumer of Medina, grand cobbler of Jerusalem and beggar of Antioch."

@@omerylmaz7403 Turks have always been beaten by Albanians, Moldovans, Venetians, Cossacks, Russians and others, so even the most combat-ready in the Turkish army, the Janissaries, were not ethnic Turks. It is very interesting and funny to read foreign reports and letters. Philippe de Harlay, about raid of August 1620 is meant here when a reported 150 Cossack saykas were said to have “pillaged and entirely burned Varna, which has no less 15.000 or 16.000 souls”. Also there are recorded under 1606, 1609, 1612, and 1616 big raids of Varna. During raid on Istanbul according to him” The fear of the Cossacks was so great that the Turkish commanders had their sailors beaten by stick to make the galleys go out against the Cossacks. According to Michel Baudier: "the name of the Cossacks caused fear and horror in Constantinople" and the Ottoman "ministers were so frightened that they cried cowardly like women instead of helping their country as befits men" Also him "The only mention of the Cossacks brings dread and terror to Constantinople". In V. Siri’s Mercury "their (cossacks) known bravery that made Turks shiver as far away as Constantinople" Even by orientally boastful, arrogantful, dismissiveful to non-Muslims Evliya Celebi wrote: "But these devils... are frisky fighters, the swine. They don't care whether they live or die. They have absorbed thousands of can nonballs and have been decimated by 200 bombshells, but this hasn't deterred them in the least. These devils have been battling continuously for nine hours. Don't you see how they remove their dead, then freshen up and resume fighting? I'm really afraid of these infidels!" In fortress at Ot Yarik Evliya and his companions were "unable to sleep out of fear of Cossacks." Evliya "About the character of the rebellious Cossacks, or the shaven-headed people" exclaims: "May Allah have mercy on us! Those who have not seen this people, even the great interpreters of religion, cannot know what the soul of these people is: enemies of the community of Muhammad and other peoples. Having entered their country ... we drove through it with prayers ... Because once during the war for the fortress of Azov, I, insignificant, got enough of these villains and saw them battling and fighting." The Cossack people, according to Evliya Chelebi, "are a staunch, stubborn and angry people." Cossacks - "a tribe of fearless kafirs" Raids on Istanbul (1615, 1620, 1624) Bosporus (1615, 1617, 1621, 1624, 1627), Sinop, Kandira, Trabzon, Silistre (Silistra), towns of Kili, Isma'il (Izmail), Ibra'il (Braila), Isakci (Isaccea), Tulca (Tulcea) etc.

For the Ottoman Empire, the administration of the northern regions of the empire was always problematic because they were forested areas, without roads, where the locals hid and waged a guerrilla war. Most of the time, the Turks preferred to leave the locals alone in exchange for a tribute. The movement of the army in these areas was expensive and ineffective from an economic point of view.

The war took place mainly in the territory of Bulgaria and ended with a victory for Russia, whose troops were about 20 km from Istanbul at the end of the fighting. the Ottoman Empire asked for a peace treaty to be concluded in the Edirne armistice. On March 3, 1878, the peace treaty of San Stefano was signed in the town of San Stefano. In this treaty, the Ottoman Empire was forced to make great concessions. It had to recognize the independence of Romania, Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria. Furthermore, the Ottoman Empire ceded the province of Kars on the edge of the Caucasus to the Russian Empire. It is the dramatisation of the real event which goes as follows: In 1675, the Turkish army advanced to the north and attacked the territories controlled by the Cossacks in the lower reaches of the Dnieper. However, although outnumbered, the Turks were thoroughly defeated. But a great empire like the Ottoman Empire could not be defeated by winning a single battle. The very next year, an even larger and better equipped sultan's army was ready to finally break out on the southern Russian border. In accordance with the customs of his ancestors, which the Turks claimed originated from the time of Muhammad, Sultan Mehmed IV sent a letter to his enemies. In short, he offers them the option of surrendering, giving him the lands he asks for, and continuing to live by the rules of the new empire, which would swallow up their territory. Throughout history, there have been surprisingly many cases where the response to this letter has been positive, as rulers often tried to save their lives in this way, terrified by the force that was brought down upon them. To Mehmed's surprise, the Cossack reaction was different. "I Sultan; son of Muhammad; brother of the sun and the moon; grandson and messenger of God; ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, Upper and Lower Egypt; king of kings; sovereign of sovereigns; invincible knight; guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ; chosen by God himself; the hope and consolation of all Muslims; protector of Christians - I order you, Cossacks from Zaporozhye, to submit to me voluntarily and without resistance, and to stop causing me problems with your attacks." - Letter of Sultan Mehmed IV The letter that the Cossacks received could not go unanswered. Rjepin, with his masterpiece, depicted the exact moment when the Cossack champions were coming up with an answer to this letter. The central position in the picture is occupied by the legendary Cossack ataman Ivan Sirko. Around him are his comrades, who greatly enjoy their own answer. It should be noted that in the original version the letter was written in verse, which only enhances its effect. The answer that the Cossacks sent to the Turkish sultan was as follows: "O sultan, Turkish devil, accursed satanic friend, follower of Lucifer. What kind of devil's knight are you, when you couldn't even kill a hedgehog with your bare dick? The devil eats, and your army eats! Thou shalt not, son of a whore, enslave Christian sons; we are not afraid of your army, and we will fight against you both on water and on land, your mother! You unbaptised, beast of Babylon, desecrator of holy Jerusalem, goat* of Alexandria, pig's head of Egypt (both upper and lower), Armenian pig and Tartar goat, horse thief of Canayamet, villain of Anatolia, grandson of the devil, fool, you pig's brat, donkey donkey, clown from this world and the other world, butcher's dog, unbaptised bull, we are your mother! That's how Cossacks from Zaporizhia answer you, nit. You won't even herd pigs for Christians, let alone rule over Christians. We don't have a calendar and we don't know what the date is. The moon is in the sky, it is the year of the Lord, and the day is the same here as there. And you and your Turks kiss our ass." The answer was signed with "Ataman Ivan Sirko and the brotherhood of the Cossacks from Zaporozhye", so that formally this witty piece could be called a letter. And it was Ilja Rjepin's painting that best evoked the atmosphere in which this hilarious text was created. There are few Russian pictures in which there are so many smiles, as in the picture of the Cossack warriors. Rjepin continued to produce superb paintings, and was one of the most important Russian painters at the turn of the century. It is interesting that he tried to make another version, smaller in dimensions, but he did not manage to finish it. This was done by his students, and the second version of the "Answer" is today in the museum in Kharkiv. The original painting, two meters high and over three and a half wide, has been in the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg since the end of the 19th century, a museum built in honor of Alexander III, the emperor who bought the painting from Ilya Repin.

After a failed uprising led by Macedonian, Karposh, which resulted in a very bloody battle against the Ottoman Turks, and in order not to have their families killed, many Macedonians moved first to Vojvodina, and from there to Ukraine which was then part of Tsarist Russia (Russian Empire). Immediately after their arrival in Ukraine, the Macedonians wanted to continue the fight against the Turks, and joined the Russian army. This was the first creation of the Macedonian Regiment, which later fought in many other wars led by the Russian Army. Macedonians in the Russian army became known for their courage and fighting spirit, and were sent to the frontline with the bravest warriors, the Russian Cossacks.

It is literally impossible to understate that this group acts and dresses like pirates of the high seas. Makes me wonder why they don't get together with the Turkish and consolidate territory to one place. A perfect example of how to fraternize and stir other groups into a state of hysteria. Wait, that is still going on in the 21st century?

That kind of messages never have sent by cossacks nor answered by ottomans. That's clear visible on the so called answer of the ottoman Sultan, that claims the sultan declares himself as "son of Mohammad and grandson of Allah". If any sultan would say that, Ulema (the scholars and religious leaders) would declare that sultan is an infidel and that would result with dethronement and beheading of Sultan.
