In 1917, a revolution overturns Russia's long-ruling Romanov dynasty, and artists begin to seek new creative ways to remake Russian society. MoMA curator Sarah Suzuki explains how artists like Aleksandr Rodchenko, Alexandra Ekster and El Lissitzky developed a new abstract language in response.

Very lively captivating presentation! I regret to live on another continent! Such talent should be brought to even more fruition in a big docu, or a taped extended guided tour? Moreover, such "traditional historical landmarks" like the russian avantgarde, are often fashioned in a way, that serves distinct historical, political or cultural views. It looses thereby the individual artist with her or his very individual motivations! An example: Paul Celans "Todesfuge" is often discussed as one of the most important poetic responses to the horrors of the nazi concentration camps, and also as a valid prove, that poetry is possible after Auschwitz. (Adorno) But at the same time, scholars have pointed out, how this poem could also be seen Celans attempt to deal with his extreme problematic relationship with his father. This video goes back to the artist, the other big reason for above made wishes. ;-)

El Zissitzky was an architect so no surprise. He put his ability where he could

Please pronounce the word "proun" correctly: PRO-UN; 2 syllables.

I’ll just kindly overlook the fact that all my favorite artists were straight up communists

can we stop with the bullshit repetoire of muscovy/russian avante-garde and talk about what moscow/russia was doing in Ukraine at this time? Will MOMA ever drop the propaganda machine of muscovy and do a show of Ukrainian art that was a direct influence of TheHolodomor???
