I listen to these at work. It's sometimes distracting because it's one of the best examples of journalism in our times. This coverage is very important for future understanding of the events of this war, and it got me thinking a lot about historiography in general. Wars are complex beyond belief, and we've seen footage that is difficult to emotionally process to put it lightly. For me the stories out of Ukraine punch me in the gut. I think Ukraine was doing all it could to resist Russian soft power. Russia somewhat successfully got the world to move on after Crimea and 8 years of ongoing low-intensity but deadly conflict in Donbas. It's clear to see Ukraine's path before the war was always leaning toward the EU, a perfectly rational and pro-Ukrainian policy. These fundamental questions about national policies that would affect every Ukrainian - well they were an overwhelming majority. Maidan, public opinion polls. And now within Ukraine we've seen political divisions melt away, and the same is true on the issue of supporting Ukraine. America, the UK, Baltic States, Poland, and other countries have made it perfectly clear how it feels like a sea change within the West is taking place. In American politics, Senator McConnell used plain language and set the tone for bipartisanship on the issue of Ukraine. The MIC in several world powers is revving up to levels of procurement that are in line with confronting both Russia and China. I think the story that's somewhat unrelated to Ukraine but no doubt wouldn't have happened without the Russian invasion and the ensuing of what I can only call a time to choose sides for the next generations. South Korea and Japan publicly announced the possibility of acquiring a nuclear deterrent. I think these developments are inseparable from Ukraine, but it seems the deals between the Philippines and the US are a sign that there will be a massively increased USN presence and mission capability. US soldiers on Taiwanese soil. There doesn't seem to be a status quo; there hasn't been time to establish one with all the rapid changes. There has been a huge display of Western soft power in the last year. It's something I've never witnessed. The Taiwan Standoff is heating up because of Russian attempts to annex sovereign territory. Beyond the general scope of the podcast but 2022 and early 2023 have marked a major geopolitical development.

If the central Asian states, and China, are acting as intermediaries for illegal imports it will be hard to stop but western countries will, I hope, step up surveillance of this form of trade. The pre-February 2022 level of imports through these countries could be a baseline to establish more recent “spikes” in purchases.

I've wondered for a longer time how the free world will be able to help Central Asia against these rising authoritarian threats, since it had for a longer time obviously been largely forgotten by the western powers as this kind of "post-soviet Russian backyard", sharing a similar history of being under the Russian thumb as the Caucasus region or obviously Ukraine. Not even talking about Myanmar here. I'm very worried countries like Kazakhstan, home to such great freedom-loving people just like Ukraine, might fall prey to authoritarian agression as well if it can't keep strong ties outside of Russia, China or Iran let's say. There's many examples like that. I think we should learn from different past strategies and put 2 and 2 together here.

These are long enough that chapters would be really awesome and helpful.

Biden should make some trips to Central Asia. We really need allies there right now. We had a great strategic base in Afghanistan but we mismanaged that situation horribly.

The Belt and Road strategy is already in progress. China is benefiting from the diminished Russian power.

I worked in Central Asia in the early 2000’s. I agree with the reporting here. That said, on a scale of 1-10, I think Central Asia is a 2 in terms of importance. The Central Asian countries are run by proud autocrats who align for convenience, but prefer their independence above Russia and certainly more than China. They are and will be tepid supporters of the nations that solve their near term interests which is stability and independence.

Humans have had a good run, thanks for the updates on all this stuff.

Kazakhstan is really a country to watch here. The new leadership is seemingly of a similar generational mindset as Ukraine's.

Central Asia as an area of a Cold War/Economic War between China and the US offers a unique opportunity. US has little to know direct interest. However, these Central Asian countries do not want to be the “Central America” of Asia. Therefore, the US can offer management and organizational skills to create a Common Market of Central Asia. In this regard, Turkei could be key. The US can help in several ways. 1-Organized of all interested area countries in a Committee where the US would only be a consultant advisor. 2-As consultant, the US could set up a common currency policy so member States could maintain a consistent inflation level before creating single currency. It could be backed by a package of hard currencies and gold. This would give the Committee a basis that offer bonds for common development projects. 3-After 10 years of mutual cooperation, a NATO like command could be considered. 4-Of course the US could be directly involved with advice/aid on pipeline technology, railroad technology, and highway development.

China and Russia have been cooperating closely on misinformation for more than five years, but especially during the past 24 months. Russia is really teaching China how to create more effective misinformation campaigns and China is helping Russia learn how to surveil, suppress and counter domestic dissent.

If Turkey does not want to be a part of NATO with new members, we need to let Turkey know they can leave the NATO that includes the new country, but not Turkey. Somehow I do not think that position will go over well with the public in Turkey. I think that most people who live in Turkey would much rather be a part of NATO, than to get out because they are absolutely not liking being a part of NATO that will includes Sweden.

Natural resources dictates that China will absorb Russia into its orbit. Equally important for the rest of the world is that Kazakstan should be honoured by all nations on this planet for what it can provide to mitigate the immense damage that climate change is doing to all of mankind which collectively all the richest nations are mainly to blame !

Western arrogance has greatly contributed to China's willingness to put its thumb on the scales in Russia's favour. The ever present narrative that Russia needs to be defeated as essential to containing China and its ambitions in Taiwan have been monumentally self defeating. The strategy should have been an entirely utilitarian charm offensive against the Chinese regardless of the standpoint of the threat posed by China simply on the grounds that China can wait. This is not 1990. The West is nowhere near as militarily and economically dominant as it once was, nor as ideologically united. Russian disinformation over the last 20 years has been remarkably successful, Western public opinion has been massively shaken by the lies of the Iraq war era and a generation of economic hardship. Large chunks of the Western population have no fat to weather further economic hardship and the Western economic system has been kept afloat by financial sleights of hand. The West simply does not have the wherewithal to take on both Russia militarily and China economically in response to Chinese support of Russia. The West's sabre rattling at China in the current climate represents a complete failure to recognise the challenges that the West faces in this battle for ideological and economic dominance and hubris is a vanity we can ill afford.
