======== Christmas Truce LYRICS ==========
Silence
Oh, I remember the silence
On a cold winter day
After many months on the battlefield
And we were used to the violence
Then all the cannons went silent
And the snow fell
Voices sang to me from no man’s land
We are all, we are all, we are all, we are all friends
And today we’re all brothers
Tonight we’re all friends
A moment of peace in a war that never ends
Today we’re all brothers
We drink and unite
Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white
Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night
Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes
A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home
Madness
Oh I remember the sadness
We were hiding our tears
In a foreign land where we faced our fears
We were soldiers
Carried the war on our shoulders
For our nations
Is that why we bury our friends?
We were all, we were all, we were all, we were all friends
A Christmas on the frontline, we walk among our friends, we don’t think about tomorrow, the battle will commence
When we celebrated Christmas, we thought about our friends, those who never made it home, when the battle had commenced
========== HISTORIC FACT ==========
On December 24, 1914, an unofficial Christmas Truce was enforced on the Western Front. An act of trust and harmony, British and German soldiers mingled and played games together in the midst of one of the most atrocious events of the 20th century - World War I.

I'm stealing that, it's hilarious. Interesting enough, as the others have said, in both World Wars, notably more countries were on the Allied powers than the Central/Axis powers. WW1; Allies; Britain (which at the time included Austalia), USA, Italy, France, Serbia and Russia Central powers; Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the Ottoman empire. WW2; Allies; USA (E-fucking-ventually), Britain (again with Australia), France, Russia (who joined six months before America) and China. Axis; Germany, Italy, Japan.
@rashkavar
@rashkavar 2 роки тому
@@Lord_Numpty There's several other powers that signed on the Axis side. Romania and Bulgaria both their armies involved in the invasion of the Soviet Union. Indeed, the operation that turned the tide in Stalingrad (Operation Uranus - the encirclement of German forces in Stalingrad) involved cutting through the Romanian Third and Fourth armies, which were guarding the Germans' flank. Finland was also an ally of Germany in what they called the Continuation War, but unlike Romania and Bulgaria, they weren't ultranationalist nutjobs like the Nazis, they just wanted to reclaim territory lost to the Soviets in the Winter War of 1939. And if you start including minor international powers rather than the ones on the front lines in Europe (and the Pacific in WWII) you get multiple representatives on every continent (except Antarctica, due to the lack of countries) picking sides. Canada, Brazil, Peru, the fighting in Africa (mostly because they were colonies and getting dragged into the war by their European overlords)...a full list of belligerants for either war is *very* long.

If for no other reason, than to give the future a chance to shine so much brighter than it did in their day. Bless you, and especially your little one, these holidays in 2021. The Christmas Truce was a series of unofficial ceasefires that took place only 5 months after the war had begun. Gaps in the fighting took place as materiel supplies ran low and commanders began to reconsider their plans following the stalemates at Marne and Ypres. Pope Benedict XV had suggested a temporary ceasefire for the celebration of Christmas, but the warring countries refused to commit to any official ceasefire. The Open Christmas Letter was also sent around this time, being an open letter signed by a group of over 100 British suffragists at then end of 1914 as the First Christmas of the Great War approached. The letter was written in acknowledgement of the horror of war and as a direct response to letters written to the president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance by a small group of German Suffragists that also had called for peace. The week before Christmas soldiers from the German side of the trenches began to sing carols, play in brass bands, and eventually, on the dawn of Christmas Day, some German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines. Calling out "Merry Christmas" In their enemies' native tongues. Initially the allies feared it was a trick, and in some sections of the trenches the allied lines simply fired upon those wishing for peace, quickly ending the momentary ceasefire. In most areas, particularly lines that weren't British (If I'm recalling it correctly) The allied soldiers held their fire upon realizing that the moment was not an attempt at subterfuge and soon came to meet their momentary friends in the middle of No-Man's Land. They exchanged gifts of tobacco, pudding, buttons, helmets, and even chocolate as they sang carols and even had some German Soldiers light Christmas trees around their trenches and played games. Not every part of the trenches was as good natured, some simply agreed to momentary ceasefires at a distance, permitting their opponents to rest and relax in their own trenches, exchange prisoners with one another, or set about the grim task of recovering the dead from No Man's Land. Unfortunately, in the subsequent years the commanding officers on both sides had issued strongly worded orders against such fraternization, and come the Christmas of 1915, when British soldiers heard carols coming from the trenches on the other side, artillery was directed to fire upon the position the sound came from, putting a stop to any future Christmas Ceasefires.

@regi grenski I'd say that there's a large difference between the evils of men like Hitler and most common soldiers, even though they were enabling and perpetuating his evil. On the other hand, WW1 was terrible, and both sides did kill quite a few civilians (though Russia and the Ottomans take the prize). However, today we don't think of it as death camps, slavery, and fascism. Because it wasn't about that, and was not the goal. My personal takeaway is that WW2 is remembered more for the cartoon insane level of villainy than anything else. The death toll was massive, but that's not going to be the first thing we think of when it comes to that war.

I feel absolutely the same. I have heard this now 10 times. I am in tears every. Damn. Time. They have not only done it justice, they have exceeded what I thought possible. It's a whole other level of Sabaton but really shows what the 'modern Sabaton' sound is going to be: symphonic, classical mixed with heavy, metal support. It is completely baffling. This is the new song that I will show and play for people who want to hear what the Sabaton fuzz is about. WWI was a weird one for sure. Many of the pilots and officers came from high ranking and adjacent royal families... many of them were related to each other, cousins at least. So 3 months prior you may have been at a large party with all these people and not you're supposed to fight them. Hard for any man to do. Same thing with the pilots in WWI. The goal was to shoot down planes, not murder pilots. Those who kept aggressively attack planes that were no long combat capable, or shooting at pilots on the ground were seen as very dishonorable men. Many of them were reprimanded for doing things like that. It was not a thing gentlemen did. Even the Red Baron was that way. He turned it off once the fight was over.

Story Time: Days before Christmas Break, a college student is visiting Ypres, Belgium for their History class. As they walk through the field, they come across a lone wooden cross with an inscription that reads: "1914 The Khaki Chums Christmas Truce 1999 85 Years Later Lest We Forget" As they walk up to the cross, they leave a small Christmas wreath and bows their head in silence. As soon as the student is finished, they raise their head to see soldiers in various uniforms from Germany, Britain, & France. One of the soldiers walks up to the student and gives them a warm smile as if to say "Thank You & Merry Christmas". The soldier walks back to his comrades and they all leave & seemingly vanish whilst standing side by side, not as enemies, but as friends.

Perfectly happy to admit i cried over this. Those men of Germany, of Britain, of Belgium and of France (and all their far flung empires), who had been murdering eachother and the command of their government, and would spend four years murdering eachother after the 25th of December 1914, managed to spend most of a day in fellow-feeling and comradeship, in spite of and despite the will of their rulers. This story's always touched me deeply, and given me hope that we might rise above the petty hatreds that dictate our lives. That we could reach a day where there is no more war, and no more pain. And just a group of friends, playing footy and getting drunk, and having a good time.

@@Unknown_Genius Have you ever read the sci-fi book Enders Game. While I don't truly agree with it, one of the key ideas was that to defeat an enemy you must know them to the point of in some ways loving them. Most soldiers are not murderous psychopaths. In fact, I'd say those are the last people who militaries want on the front lines. Many are killing not because they hate the other side, though that may naturally develop as friends are wounded and die, but rather because it is their duty/job. War is a terrible thing, but there are reasons it exists. However, the truce is truly an inspiring story. Even if the leaders and nations as a whole have agendas, individuals can set aside their differences.

We will never know and stating such high percentages of monsters in the rows of the former eney can raise hatred of living people thinking of their great-grandfathesr or even great-great-grandfathers, remembering them as a good man to them when they were a child after the war and getting angry about such statements. What will we get out of newly raised hatred by thinking bad of alread deceased men? Right, only new hatred. We shall overcome the negativ feelings that rise in us when thinking of that cruel past of humankind but we shall never forget what humans are capable of doing against each others. We still have not changed in general. You see that by watching the news and seeing all that wars all over the world or even the little wars in our societies. Hatred and arguments are everywhere between fellow humans and even parting families. We have to develope our minds and very souls not to fail again as our ancestors did and by that I mean failing on every side of the great wars.
