========= 1916 LYRICS ==========
Sixteen years old when I went to the war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Chasing my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled and I died,
And I never did get any older,
But I knew at the time that a year in the line,
Was a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered, and we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we brawled and we fought and we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
A thirst for the Hun, we were food for the gun,
And that's what you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees,
Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother,
And I fell by his side, and that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother and she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame,
And the day’s not half over and ten thousand slain,
And now there's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier.
========= Historic Fact ==========
Resulting in around 300,000 fatalities, the Battle of the Somme is considered one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts of the First World War and in human history. The battle, which was fought between British and French forces versus German forces, kicked off on July 1, 1916, and ended on November 18 that same year.

Sergeant Stubby deserves his own song. Plz guys! One of America's greatest heroes during WW I didn't walk on two legs. He ran on four! Still America's most highly decorated war dog, and the ONLY war dog to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant for valor in the face of the enemy, and he single-handedly (pawed-ly) captured a German spy in the Argonne.

In 1916, 300,000 died at the sommes alone. My great uncle died there. In the whole war, 21 million were wounded, 10 million soldiers died, and 10 million civilians died. My grandfather was born in 1900 in England, and joined the French army at age 15 as they wouldn’t know his age. I lived with my grandfather for many years, and during the night he’d scream and during the day there’d be times where he was back in the trenches. He and his comrades were hit with chlorine gas, and he was piled up with all of the other dead bodies, where he would have been buried alive had he not roused and made it known he was alive.

The original song is Lemmy singing accompanied by a bass drum and a cellist. Very simple and very powerful at the same time. This arrangement takes nothing away from the original and adds so much depth to the story. I think Lemmy would have loved it.

I was a soldier with the US Army in Iraq. What got me, besides the obvious from the lyrics, was the end. The soldiers all moving through the crowd, because they have to finish the journey. The crowd stops, because they can't follow. And the kid, looking up, knowing that the path ahead is unknown, and he shouldn't have been able to see that far down the road yet, but he must walk it anyway. And then they silently move off into the fog, marching into forever.

My name is Michael, and I'm U.S. Marine vet that served in the mid-90s. I never saw combat, but I have family and friends who did. It really doesn't matter whatever flag, nation, or cause that your fighting for, ALL wars are brutal hell and ALL families are devastated when they get that knock on their front door (or phone call) and told that their loved one has been killed or is missing in battle. No politics here... just rememberence. All military personnel irregardless of nationality, sex, creed, color, and background who dies in battle is a fallen warrior in my book. That's how they should be remembered. Sabaton, thank you for mixing military history with metal. Your music is beyond awesome, and please keep doing what you're doing. May our loving God bless and comfort every family around the world who have lost loved ones in battle.

In case you are wondering if I am a fellow military veteran, no I am not due to being mentally challenged and unable to serve but that hasn't stopped me from honoring the men and women who have served America's military and even more so for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and never got to come home to live out the rest of their lives in peace and raise a family. May God bless you, your household, your family and your car or truck. :)

@@SoundwaveX7 Thank you for those wonderful comments. Look, don't feel bad about not being able to serve in the military. Not everyone is able to join or get accepted for numerous reasons. THE STONES ARE IN OWS, IN LAND THEY WERE GIVEN, / ALL HAD LAIN AS ONE, FOR 60 YEARS OR MORE. BLOOD AND TEARS HAVE GROWN THE LANDS UNTIL ONLY MEMORIES REMAIN. THEIR DEEDS ARE READ AS HERO'S. ACTIONS THAT WERE TAKEN THEN GIVE NOW OUR LIVES A PURPOSE. WE REMEMBER. ALL MUST NOT GORGET, THE TOTAL SACRIFICE THEY GAVE FOR US. So glad I got to know him and watch him grow old into his 90's. He was priceless. His name was Genovese Carelli and I will never forget his name. having been to the somme and felt the heaviness of the area , this is tremendous cover of an amazing song about a heart-breaking loss not only the British people felt but every member of the troops from the commonwealth , there is a stunning Canadian Elk memorial for their losses , but the mile after mile if white crosses is still ingrained in my mind 40 years later (i was 15 at the time) . not ashamed to say this brought a tear to my eye.
@phantomreaper2057
@phantomreaper2057 3 місяці тому
I agree the cost of lives that were lost not just by the British but by all of the countries involved is insane and it’s hard not to have teary eyes especially when you realise that on average during the battle of the Somme on average roughly 13 soldiers were killed every minute it’s a huge amount of information to take into consideration even though they all knew the potential risk of death it’s still not easy to accept that 12-13 possibly even 14 soldiers lost their lives every single minute that passed but even today we still remember the sacrifices that those brave souls made for all of us in the present day and respect the choices that every one of them made etc as Churchill said during ww2 NEVER IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW by this he meant that we of the civilian population owe far more than we could ever possibly imagine to those brave young men of the armed forces for all that they are prepared to risk to keep us safe and free from harm even if it means sacrificing their own lives to do so and imo that’s not just a simple bunch of words but a cold hard fact that those of us that are civilians owe our very free and safe lives to the people of the armed forces who risk their lives for our safety and peace etc even dying in the process at times etc

The Canadian Elk memorial (actually a caribou) is the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, unveiled on June 7, 1925, and dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. It is the most prominent of seven memorials to that regiment erected across France and Belgium, one in Turkey (they fought at Gallipoli before the Battle of the Somme), and one at Bowring Park in the capital city of Newfoundland, St. John's.

The closest was being able to see Russian sub pop up about one+ hundred yards behind us. That was a trip ! Being on a oiler we refueled and re-armed other ships. So we always had destroyers and air craft carriers within range. One of the worst things to hear was this is not a drill fire in the paint locker. My great grand father was a soldier for France in WWI. I never knew him, but I heard all of the stories that my grandma taught me. He was 17 in 1915, and as a medicine student, he was not in the front. Instead, his task was to retrieve the bodies left in the trenches. Every day, for years, he had to wander in the silence of the deserted fields, and pile whoever he may find in a chariot. I can't even imagine what he has seen or how much PTSD that gave him, but the look in my grandma's eyes gave me chills fir life. After the war, he finished his career, and 25 years later, he was called back for WW2, as a medic on the Maghreb front. He finally made the landing in Italy, where a bomb took his leg in the end of 1943. He dedicated his life for France, but today, as the horrors of war seem closer closer than ever, I can't help but wonder : for what did he, and millions of other soldiers throughout the centuries and nations, had to suffer ?

She grabbed him in a hug and it was like holding a statue. 😢 He suffered from PTSD depression and many health problems. problems. He fought the government 10 years for help he was always denied. Sadly he passed in 2018 age 71. I miss him very much.

@@Sabaton I do hope to see a song or two some day about the US civil war. Personally I feel a US civil war song would need to be sad and yet hopeful tune. Maybe have it be about Men walking a dirt road through a sea of blue and grey, down a trail of grim and woe, with the song ending with A tall man in a top hat and a beard joining the men.

@@hellhoundactual8201 It is difficult to imagine losing all your friends and comrades at once, and the guilt of being the one who survived. My great grandmother's cousin emigrated to Australia from Sweden shortly before WWI broke out. In 1916 he enlisted and was sent to the Western front; the Anzac troops have formidable records and I found 70+ pages about his endeavours in the war. I don't think he ever engaged in actual battle as his task was to retrieve his fallen comrades from the trenches. This was nightmare enducing and most of the soldiers who had to do this could only stomach it more max four weeks before their nerves were shot. My relative spent TWO YEARS carrying out his friends and comrades from the trenches before he collapsed mentally and was sent back to Australia. I can only speculate why he endured it for so much longer, and my best guess it that he was used to gore as he grew up in a butcher shop. After one miserable year back in Australia he used a gun to no longer relieve the horrors from the war. It took almost four years before his dad received notice about his death. Anyway, he might have returned to Australia from the trenches but he was a broken shell; he was as much among the casualties of the trenches as those comrades he had to retrieve. Just like your great grandfather was.
