Coming from the s20 I'm obsessed with this camera

I wish reviewers also talked about the photo quality at zoom levels between 3x and 10x, as there's a huge gap between these two that will be filled only digitally.

A zoom lens is a lens with an adjustable focal length. It can be wide-angle, standard or telephoto. The S21 Ultra has two telephoto lenses.

Can you guys compare with the SD888 version when you get your hands on one, to see if there is a photo quality difference vs the Exynos version? We've seen it in the past, and the image signal processor is not clear on the 2100 if it's identical to the 888's.

The really need some updates. I think most of this is processing. The hardware is clearly good, but the photos don't reflect the power of the hardware. I also think they need to include an option to take portraits from the 3x zoom lens.

I found that this camera is just AMAZING. I have the note 10+, and I thought nothing could beat it, but the s21 ultra is out of this world. One thing though, the phone warned me that the camera was getting hot(?). I took a series of wildlife photos and it is an 87° day, I am in the shade. I turned it off because yes, it was hot near the camera. I need to look into settings that keep it cooler but still give me great photos. And really, the photos were just so beautiful, they looked like I used a digital pro SLR 35mm - or even a film SLR. Night photos are much better than the note 10+ as well. Each mode I tried was about a mile better than the note. I was a note fan, I have each one except the ones after the 10+. I got the s21 ultra because it was the only one offered with 512 gb storage (but NO SD card slot - which I never use, anyway). I had too many SD cards - top end ones - go corrupt for no reason, so no - I won't use them unless it's in my car camera.

Great phone. Most complaints are preference and I hope some future software updates can improve 4k60 recording. Too bad S21 doesn't use 3x for portrait shots.

Can you comment on taking pictures of documemts? The peripheral aberrations of my S20Ultra drive me crazy when taking a picture of a letter or document. Words close to the edge are completely distorted. I always have to move back the phone and zoom in... That was clearly better with my previous S9+. What about the S21Ultra?

I would like to point out two things. 1. You missed out 108 mp shots. 2. If you use a tripod, night mode pictures improves drastically as compared to handheld. A *CAMERA* review should have mentioned that.

I'm intrigued to know how the 10x zoomed photos from the S21 Ultra compare to 10x zoomed photos from the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra. I know the S21 Ultra is optical, but only 10MP. I have the Mi 10 Ultra and the 10x zoomed photos are quite impressive. I know not optical, but 48MP and show as much quality as the 5x optical lens it houses.

Personally I'd pick this over the iPhone for pictures but I am wondering if video stabilization would be on par and whether it has the pulsating AF effect which usually kicked in vehemently in low light situations.

Great review as usual. Samsung needs a few updates to sort this out, and I think the cameras will be very good, not outstanding and maybe not commemorate with the pricing, but at least respectable. At the moment they are a bit hit or miss. Cheers!

Got the 256 GB model. Won't miss the SD card slot since I'm coming from a Pixel 4a and the 128 GB was plenty. Not too happy with lack of included earphones and charging brick but the pre-order promo of a $200 Samsung credit more than makes up for those shortcomings. Also, T-Mobile gave me an $800 credit for the 4a so I basically got the new Ultra for $400 plus tax.

I sure hope they allow you to choose what lens you want when taking pics. Is there a decent 'pro mode' w/ real control over lens options? So sick of being 'told' what I should do by the software. IT'S NOT AN IPHONE!

I have a S21 ultra and when I take a selfie, its all brushed out. I have gone and disabled the beauty face mode but it still feels like having makeup on every selfie. Its supper annoying. Can someone please help?

I have it for 3 days and I'm extremely disappointed. My P30 Pro still takes superior pictures. The phone overheats so much that the apps turn off (incl the camera) and the pictures look overprocessed and painted over. It's really bad.

but honestly this all comes down to software and hot hardware, so they can put out some software fixes and clean this up a bunch. But if it still allows for manual control, that will be awesome. but it do not see it doing what my mirrorless camera does.

I have the S20+. The images are always over sharpened. Are there good third party apps that allow sharpening to be controlled?

How is it possible to talk about DETAILS on this setup? I have the phone and by zooming pictures from the main cam even below 1:1 size everything is so processed, it looks like an oil painting rather than a photo. Besides on very luminuous days, there is simply too much light for the sensor and even taking pictures with the live histogram and keeping light detection below saturation (expert raw, pro camera) everything farther than 20 meters is pixelated and blurry. Zoom lenses are no better. It must be said that for Jpegs, the processing coming from expert raw is much less aggressive though.

I'm still waiting on night mode selfies and a better software for taking pictures and videos in other apps without the glitching. I've always had a Galaxy, but it makes me consider the new iphone

Thank you for revealing the truth about the s21 ultra real image quality ! Apart from the lens versatility the software processing is a bit disappointing. I use an S20 ultra and I hope from update to update that samsung will improve its image processing. I used a pixel 2xl for 3 years and the image quality overall was better. I was really hoping that the large sensor will save the day but even in medium light images will be soft, noisy. The night mode is also overprocesed and the portrait is more artificiall and skin appear soft. I use raw and light room most of the time and the image quality is much improved ! I am waiting to see what the 12 bit raw capabilities of the s21 ultra can do in comparison to the S20 ultra. The screen, sound, speed, software on the phone is ok, I can't complain, I got the phone for half of the price, but if I've paid full price I wouldn't been so happy. Looking forward for the pixel 6 XL.

Thanks for at least pointing out the processing issues on this phone. No other reviewer has mentioned, even in passing, the obvious over processing and oversharpening. Since I got this on the 25th I have been shocked at how bad the images out of this camera are coming. They are so over-sharpened as if I am taking photos from a low tier budget phone from 2011. There is weird artifacting and grain in low light or half shade-half sunlit areas. Even the selfies are awful as the face is turned out looking like plastic. I upgraded from the S20 ultra thinking that this phone would be a major improvement in terms of the image processing. But it is Samsung and the only thing they are concerned about is selling their products through belligerent marketing. The way they describe the “re-mosaic processing” in their keynote they made it appear like this was revolutionary and is going to improve the image quality like nothing else. The problem with Samsung is shoving down hardware with absolutely no software optimisation. They simply cannot compete with Apple in terms of camera image processing. This is a fact and an unalterable one.

The night mode is nice, some could take a trip though lightroom to clean them up better. But i want this for ease of use. the Iphone is a pain the azz, trying to transfer photos from my From my computer to the iphone. i get ERRORS and need to use itunes, and blah blah blah. But with andriod, open phone, drag and drop DONE!

Ahh man! What a mixed bag the camera has turned out to be (for me). I have the 256GB Exynos, here's my findings on the photography front... In general I think it's fair to say this phone expands the shooting possibilities far beyond any other device I've had to date, which most recently include the S20 FE 5G, Pixel 4XL, Pixel 2XL. For me the choice of focal ranges is what i've been looking for and something I didn't ever expect to see in a package like this. I thought triple lens cameras would be the limit, so the S21 Ultra came as a surprise and I hoped mistakes made in the past generation would be ironed out. The hardware itself is definitely more than capable of handling a multitude of shooting scenarios but it is ultimately let down by the software that I VERY much doubt will be fixed, ever! My first impressions were of the sensor & lens choices themselves, all seem very capable, all include massively improved stabilization and autofocus capabilities and even the pixel sizes are promising particularly on the tele lenses. A clue to Samsung engineering decisions comes with the assumed improvement over to the 108MP pixel binning sensor compared to the S20 Ultra last year, but it serves far more than just taking photos in the wide setting. Samsung are clearly borrowing ideas from the AI kings at Google, but their implementation is weak and in many scenarios I have found using the cameras terribly frustrating. Overall, in brightly lit daytime shots indoors and outdoors with all lenses I cannot complain, but that's as long as you're pointing the camera at certain targets that are deemed ideal for the lens mode you are in! When I venture outside these ideal scenarios I'm ending up with unexpected and awful results. In medium and low light scenes my problem is exacerbated further through Samsungs smart choices that you have no control over whatsoever, giving me further disappointing results. So what am I banging on about here Well in a nutshell it's Samsungs focus assist mode. As an end user you only know it exists because you can selectively turn it off between the 0.6x UW and 1x W lenses when moving a subject much closer to the lens itself...But, you cannot turn it off between the 1x W, 3x tele and 10x tele lenses! In scenarios Sammy deem fit for telephoto shots, ie. extra long focal length scenes (generally) in good light the tele lenses are always picked at the set 3x and 10x magnifications. Pictures are often impressive but at times smoothing could be better and sometimes I get light haloing around objects, but still a big improvement on anything i've had before. It all goes terribly wrong when I bring my subjects much closer to the lenses in either the 3x or 10x tele modes. These lenses have great autofocus and are more than capable of handling this scenario, but what the software does (after a second or two) is pick the next sodding lens down and then upscale the flaming image! Some might say, that's my fault because I've pushed the ISO or shutter speed too much, but no, it's happening when there's more than enough light available to these lenses and even if it wasn't, night mode would overcome this in dark scenes anyhow! Which moves me onto the 108MP sensor, Sammy picked it not just for the 4x binning extra light crud. It also makes for a great cropping in option when deemed necessary, and you'd think the results would be comparable to the 3x tele, but sadly no, in almost every shot i've taken where it's used the 1x to crop in the results are still very disappointing compared to the optical lenses. Smoke and mirrors people, smoke and mirrors! Focus assist should be optional for ALL lenses and if you do turn it off, all it needs to do is warn you that a shot might not come out as well as you expected. Although to be blunt the results with it permanently on are terrible anyway! In fact I personally feel it shouldn't be doing what it's doing at all. Anyone who has ever held a camera and taken a photograph will know these things cannot work miracles, and Samsung are literally trying to trick you into thinking it can, with awful results! If you get the over processed, smushed images they are all coming from the lenses dropping down and upscaling or cropping in from the 108MP sensor. Utterly awful engineering decisions that make it all look seamless and magic but you more often that not get terrible photos.

Thank you GsmArena, as always, honest and reliable reviews i can trust. I've been saying this for the last week now, "S21 ultra just bring extreme processing and overexposure" to the party. The rest of its features, the ones that matter, is no different to last year's S20 ultra. Mi 11 beats this phone, Samsung just added as much features as possible but nothing new that actually works.

the processing on the 3x and 10x lens is just meh, Huawei is doing a much better job with the P40 Pro 5x lens not looking like a oil-painted cartoon once inspected on a PC and not on a social network, and that 4k60 for 1250 euro is appalling on all cameras, i'd take Mi 10 Ultra any day over this, if only it were available in Europe officially
