The Samsung QN90D 4K Neo QLED TV faces some stiff competition this year, but we have a feeling Samsung knew that when designing it. While the QN90D carries over much of the picture quality performance from its predecessor, the Samsung QN90C, there is a long list of new features to consider. In this first-look video, we talk about what Samsung brought to this model, consider some key measurements, and get some first impressions on picture quality. Still, as we dig in, we discover new questions to answer in our forthcoming review.
Oh, and as a bonus: Samsung is tossing in a free 65-inch TV to anyone who pre-orders the QN90D within the first three weeks of its coming out, links below.

Im still lovin and rocking my 1st gen neo, the QN90a! I gave my younger brother my LG BX oled and got the qn90a....night and day difference lemme tell ya! When my room is totally dark and free of any light source, and everytime my qn90a screen would go black, u cant even tell the tv is on or off the black lvls are that dang good, oled good even! I would consider a newer qn90 model, but according to reviews the newer ones havent been quite as good..almost! But not quite as good as the 90a. Maybe if this 90d is better i will get it. Would like one with newer features and a little brighter and a bit better picture quality then ya, ill definitely get this new one. The 90a has been very hard to match, let alone beat.....at least in my opinion anyways...

I dont know what size was measured here in the charts, I assume 65", correct me if i missed it somewhere but I got a 50" qn90d from Amazon last weekend and its already back in the box. Just way too dim for me with using it as a PC monitor. It was maxed at 50 brightness/contrast in game mode out of the box and it still looked no where close to 700-800 nits full screen so maybe the one I got is defective or they use different panels on smaller sizes. My Hisense 55" u8k just blows it away with brightness and contrast.

I own the first edition flagship Qled, the 2018 Q9F. Wow I am blown away by that Nit number and colour accuracy. Previously I have been somewhat un moved by peak nit numbers in newly released qleds and nqleds compared to the around 1500-1600 of the Q9F. This has my mind wandering into ‘is it time for an upgrade’ mode 😬😁

2018? So that's the Q9FN? such a legendary TV. QLED. No wide angle layer. *SUPER* deep blacks that created a 3D effect in some scenes. As soon as that wide angle layer came in, they lost that ability.
@TheNickoslicK
@TheNickoslicK Місяць тому
@@cronoesify Yes that’s the one. Hooked up to even the mid/high range Panasonic UDB820 4k Blu ray player it still looks real nice. It’s only downside is to get 10bit 444 chroma u have to mess about a bit with the settings (typically put on 24p frame rate) due to the 18gbps bandwidth limit, or make do with 420 if the disc doesn’t support the lower 24 fps.

Yet the S90D OLED which peaks at around 1300 nits is brighter 99% of the time. Not trying to push you to QD-OLED but trying to illustrate just how misleading nit measurements are on a FALD LCD television.

The big question I have is have Samsung reduced motion blur with their latest QLED? Looking at the video displayed on this first look - it still looks like there is motion blur. (I upgraded a 6 year old QLED to a 2 year old QLED. (The newer QLED, while having better image quality, black levels and colour has more motion blur than the older set)

I have a LG C1 OLED TV with a ZOOM button that lets me zoom in on part of the screen, which I use often. I think Samsung has a feature on one of its TVs that lets you change the size of the TV image on their 80 something inch TV from 80 something all the way down to 40 something. I think this is a great way to not have to look at giant faces when watching talking heads, just change to 40 or 50 something marches, then for movies or cinematic TV shows, which to FULL SCREEN SIZE. Does this all make Sense? Know of any makes and models of TVs with these features? Thanks!
@jonathanparle8429
@jonathanparle8429 Місяць тому
I use the cinema zoom function on my old LG TV to drastically reduce the black bar real estate on the top and bottom of the screen. What I lose on the far left and right of the picture is to me a very small price to pay. Of course I would not admit doing this to any videophile, let alone post on the internet for all to see that I do this given that it is considered to be cinematic sacrilege 🙃

They won't ever do that because doing so would be admitting their error/mistake - and admitting defeat. They would "lose face" in the eyes of the world (in their minds) and that is entirely unacceptable to them. Keep in mind here that to add DV to their TVs would have only cost them less than $3 per unit. That's what this is all about. Less than a $3 licensing fee per TV sold.

The QN90C used to be pretty high on my TV buying watchlist but with Dolby Vision steadily becoming the premium HDR format of choice for most streaming services as well as making its way more and more to 4K blu rays, I decided to scratch it off the list. I know that to a lot of people think the exclusion of Dolby Vision is not a big deal, but if you're paying a lot of money for a premium TV then you'd expect all the premium features. I doubt that Samsung will ever bow to pressure and finally start to support Dolby Vision but I kind of feel like they'll start to get left behind if they don't.
@michaelbeckerman7532
@michaelbeckerman7532 Місяць тому
Agreed. All of Hollywood is moving in the direction of Dolby Vision now. Very few films are being released in HDR10+ today. It's really just a matter of time before Samsung will have to finally cave in and support Dolby Vision. Now, Dolby Vision isn't perfect and it still has its flaws and shortcoming, of course, but it is what the film industry has settled on for their default HDR format now it appears. Samsung can only try and buck that trend for so long.
@bpowick
@bpowick Місяць тому
@@michaelbeckerman7532 it’s kind of similar to the old blu ray vs HD DVD battle. Technically HD DVD was slightly better but blu ray had more backing from movie studios so it won out in the end. HD DVD went the way of the Dodo. I guess it’s the same with any competing technologies within the movie industry, eventually one will win out. Dolby Vision is winning the premium HDR format race and if Samsung continue to refuse to support it they could end up getting left behind.

On my 43in QN90C, Filmmaker mode, in SDR, does not seem to be an dimmer than Standard, in HDR though, Movie and Filmmaker are much dimmer, even with Settings tweaked for full panel brightness. I have to use Standard mode for HDR movies cause the others are just too dim for my taste. (i still prefer SDR content though)
@Mariarosa-id3cg
@Mariarosa-id3cg Місяць тому
Other modes will just over brighten the image. hdr is supposed to have only the highlights very bright (like real life) adding three dimensionality to the image. By making everything brighter you lose that effect, that’s why filmmaker mode is better.
@Tibadude
@Tibadude Місяць тому
@@Mariarosa-id3cg Disagree. HDR has always looked like one is wearing sunglasses, at night... Filmmaker mode makes things too dark and has lots of black crush. You can not see any background details at all, or is always just s dense black fog. SDR versions of movies look far more realistic to me. Furthermore, I can not stand the very yellow color tone of Warm 2 they default to. Standard tone looks natural to me, whites are white, not tan/yellow. In the end, set your tv to what looks best to you, not what someone else claims is "best".

@@Tibadude mini led tends to crush shadow details in order to suppress blooming in hdr, instead sdr gives you more control over the image. Maybe that’s why you prefer sdr, Warm 2 is correct because is usually the closest to the scientific standards and objectively closest to real life.

They don't tell you because they don't want you to be able to make your purchase decision based on a criteria that they don't think you should be making it on. Just knowing the number of dimming zones doesn't tell you which TV has better/more advanced local dimming capabilities. If the processor can't control those zones effectively, then you could have one million zones and it wouldn't do you a damn bit of good. This is why TVs with lower zone counts but better processors (like the Sony LED's) consistently outperform TVs with higher zone counts and weaker processors.

Actually, AR headsets and glasses like we are starting to see come out now will likely wipe out about 90% of the TV panel business over the next five years. Companies like Sony, Samsung, TCL, Vizio, Panasonic and Hisense will come out with their own headsets and glasses that will offer 70% of the functionality of the Apple Vision Pro for 30% of the price.
