Meta Quest's upcoming iOS app on iPhone will natively support Apple Spatial Video, a.k.a. MV-HEVC, without transcoding into 3D side by side or sideloading with a USB-C cable to a PC and then to your Meta Quest 3 just to watch them! You can use the iPhone App to upload spatial videos on Meta Server for cloud processing and then watch them directly on your Meta Quest VR headset! And it’s FREE!!
This will be rolling out at the Meta Quest v62 update (confirmed by @MetaQuestVR )

It is confirmed by the CTO at Meta that v62 will fully support Apple Spatial Video on Meta Quest directly!

Btw: The films I like the most are the travel-videos/documentations. The catacombs in France and Salem/George Washington reports were one of the best things I saw in the Metaverse.

I love how the Apple Vision Pro and iPhone are going to start encouraging 3-D videos to be made. I’ve always loved them, but they never encouraged creators to film in 3D due to the limited audience who can view them. Vision Pro is not for most people, but it’s going to project a better future for us long time VR users.

Thanks for this, Hugh! I tried it today. I think the quality falls quite short on the Meta Quest 3 compared to the Vision Pro. The low resolution of the Quest 3 materially impacts the experience. Furthermore there is quite a bit of frame stuttering. You don't have any of these problems viewing in the Vision Pro. That being said, I think the depth you get from the iPhone 15 Pro footage tends to be pretty good. Regardless, a great way to get a feel for what Spatial Video is like. I think that Apple may do some very interesting computational photography enhancements (using Gen AI) when they bring Spatial Photos to the iPhone. Qualcomm has already demoed some cool features that could be applicable. BTW, I'm not as impressed with the Spatial Photos. I think this is a great near-term area of innovation for Apple.

Very good feedback! Thank you. Yes, this is for people can only get the Quest 3 still join the Spatial Video fun. More platform support the format meaning it will grow and get improvement faster. I think it will push Apple make it even better

@@hughhou It turns out Spatial Video is a big deal. :-). I think it will drive the next big thing in smartphone cameras. To most consumer, it is a great experience. Volumetric, please Apple. Again, the Apple innovation here is that they made it so easy for all of us (with an iPhone 15 Pro for the moment) 3D content creators. I’ve been watching your videos and they just remind me of how much Apple has simplified things. Genius. Of course, that takes nothing away from you and other 3D video pros and creators. Exciting!

I ordered a AVP but I’ve been debating if I actually keep it now. Spatial video on Quest would be great because it actually has UKposts on it.

I think you should keep it for a week or two at least to validate all the theory, play it to see if you like it or not. The return period I believe is at least 2 weeks?

@@hughhou yeah it is but I'm getting on a flight on the 4th and won't be back for a month. My goal was to create a ton of spatial travel content. I even used a lot of my points to fly business class so people can get a better idea of the flight experience. That and some smaller things like showing all the unique cuisine in Vietnam. I guess I'll have 2 days to play with it an decide.

I don't think they use something like that on vision pro. They just record 16:9 and show a square so they can move the inside around when you move your head → not real 3D or even the try to fake it with Ai, just feels a bit more as if

I agree, it looks just like a parallax window effect. I belive they do the same with the panoramic pictures to increase the immersion but it's just a ux trick for now

Where does this leave the VR180 format that Google created 6 years ago? Dead? Is Quest even compatible with it today?

Yes Quest 3 is prefect compatible with it - just check all my VR180 video on UKposts VR - play fine on Quest. On Apple it called "immersive 180 video" - different name, exact same thing!

1. Can I convert my Insta360 Pro 2 :?videos to MV-HEVC format (still 8K3D 360° videos)? 2. Is it enough to have e.g. a 4090 for mv-hevc hardware decoding/encoding (so is hevc hardware decoding/encoding enough to also encode/decode mv-hevc?)

Finally someone who has the courage to doubt an Apple product, for me from the beginning everything they showed was nothing more than fake demos and this 3D video has nothing 3D just a square frame with an illusion of depth similar to traditional parallax.

It will be. This is NOT release yet. We just exam the code and making prediction :) When it is officially out, I will make an indepth tutorial on this.
