We need to stream kids to math and to arithmetic as separate school subjects. We need to re-introduce history, philosophy, literature, grammar, political science and psychology at the elementary and secondary school levels and we need to challenge the kids. Today, many underperforming kids are just moved through the system.
@jsikarwar

Arithmetic is essential for all. It should be taught separately from mathematics, as part of "Life Skills" which would include some basic science. Mathematics should be optional.

I spent many a night on top of an Observatory looking out into the Universe that evolved the ability for me to do so. Yes it's complex but the underlying matrix is really quite simple. No matter what dimensions exist they all start from a simple base that is restricted to physical laws, that's why it's knowable. I'm an artist/ gardener but I love all disciplines of scientific inquiry, it guides me to understanding the amazing World we live on and how it came to be. Oh by the way - I've always wanted to have lunch with Lewis at Carnegie Del, best Corned Beef on Rye anywhere, unfortunately they recently shut down

I think Lewis Black is underestimating what humour can do. One of its most potent powers at the moment is to ridicule the nonsense we get from some of our politicians. It can also help put things in perspective, and do so many other things and I've noticed Lewis Black do many of those things.

Math and logic should be taught together more And or basic computer science Symbolic thinking is a major help to critical thinking. Most people are put off by the fact they can't read the language at all. It's not just math itself that is the issue. We are drifting into a highly technical world with only the tools of rehetoric.

@DavidAndrewsPEC

"NO ONE ever told me math was a language" Same for me - then I took a course in very applied maths at college ... blew my fucking mind: I discovered for myself that it was both a language and a toolbox ... a language for describing problems precisely a toolbox for solving those problems a language for describing those solutions precisely ... if that makes any sense.... What I do with my students, when I take any on, is to explain to them that they're going to be learning this language and be getting a toolbox ... and that they will be learning how to use both appropriately.

Light is the smallest curvature of space. When you take matter or geometry curves are extremely small space of entrapment. Usually the ratio of radius to that of circumference is 22/7 approximately. This ratio remains the same for most circles. When you reduce the radius to almost zero and calculate the speed of bending it gives the speed of light. So curvature is always associated with speed. Normal ratio calculations of length space gives the speed of that in the matter world. That's why frequently of matter is unique like frequency of hydrogen atoms and that shows brownian movements. Even black holes have unique frequency based on size or diameter. They mostly show in gravity range and even earth has a kind of gravity. Climate is a kind of curvature and cause disturbance like weather conditions.

I find it interesting that the debate around science versus religion centers on the one (I believe mistaken) belief that the Bible says that the universe is only about 6000 years old. What would happen to the debate if creationists were to concede that one point? Would they all suddenly realize that in fact science appears to support the idea that the universe may actually have been created and not just appeared on its own? "Fossils, people!" - Lewis Black

Well, there is the constant argument "we will survive. we always have". Until we don't. And there is no one there to argue that we didn't survive. Sort of like the "God was looking after me" argument. Because those that would argue against that opinion no longer have a voice.

The wide-held belief that mathematics is completely certain is untrue. Just as physics has unanswerable questions, there are problems in mathematics that we will never be able to solve. The fascinating thing is that this has been proven, i.e., we are certain that there are uncertainties in mathematics. 🤯

Bill Clinton said it well in his 2012 speech at the Democratic convention. He said he had been asked many times how he got four straight years of budget surpluses, and he said, "It was inconvenient for my opponents that I was just a poor boy from Arkansas that understood arithmetic!" He was telling the nation that numbers really do not lie. People can lie using numbers - statistics in particular, but there IS a bottom line that is undeniable.

I’m going to have to disagree with Dr Brian Greene (whom I have upmost respect and admiration for) regarding classical mechanics and medical school. Classical mechanics (physics 1 and 2), in my opinion, it is absolutely necessary to fully understand essential concepts such as flow or velocity and apply it to practically everything; such as respiration, blood distribution, nerve conduction, etc. But beyond that would be overkill. I agree with Brian on the fact that Calculus is overkill, additionally, it’s not even necessary for physic 1 and 2. An argument can be made for having small crash physic course interjected throughout an extended-physiology course, opposed having to learn a full physic course; which I am not in favor of. This can change when technology in the sector of machine learning and AI improves. On the other hand, I, 124% agree that Math is not for everyone and it shouldn’t be taught unanimously to every individual. Simple arithmetic (including fraction, decimals, and percentage) is a good baseline. students should have control of their learning from there. I’m all for bringing back classes (in its most basic form), such as, wood shop, physical education, nutrition and environmental science, cooking, etiquette, communication skills, financial literacy, modern psychology, etc.

Math Joke: An engineer proved that all odd numbers are prime. He empirically tested all the odd numbers up to 13 and found them to be prime, so he then took the inductive step to conclude that all odd numbers are prime. Well, except for 9, but that doesn't matter because statistically you would expect at least one bad data point in a sample of that size. A math prof told us that one. Mathematicians have a low opinion of engineers and tell engineer jokes like the general US population would tell Pollock jokes.

comedy has always been a great way to change minds, scientists may tell you facts, but if you don't accept or like those facts your brain reminds unchanged, comedy can make you laugh at stupid notions and then have you go "hang on a minute, that's right, that's ridiculous" in other debates the question of "without god where do we get our morality" can be answered "easy, without rules events occur that harm society" you don't have to be moral to know child molesting is going to screw with every aspect of life, the same with truth, it's no good cherry picking what you want to believe and what you want to deny because that way leads to breakdown of society, a bizarro world where no one tells the truth, we HAVE to strive for truth or again we just fall apart. when AI get going for real, schools might be about sitting around debating the meaning of math, rather than learning to pass tests.
