Forgotten Shine Restoration

Forgotten Shine Restoration

2 роки тому

In restoring these rusty scissors, I used simple techniques and machinery. To restore these old scissors to their "forgotten shine" I had to derust them with a needle scaler, soak them in rust solvent, sandblast them, grind them, powder coat them and make a new screw on the lathe. If you don't have a sandblasting booth and a lathe, there are plenty of other ways to get where you want to go. I especially liked being able to work on the lathe again for this restoration. I bought these old rusty scissors again from a flea market internet site. Please be sure to also note that this video is not just to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from the daily grind!
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The scissors were in very poor condition, I suspect the seller (who I bought this item from) found it deep underground. In the first step I removed the rough dirt and rust with the needle scaler. Following that, I put the old scissors in rust remover and sandblasted them. With sandpaper I sanded the inside to make them even again. Now I coated the parts with a black powder coating to protect the scissors from future rust. I painted the sanded surfaces with cold bluing to prevent rust from occurring there as well. Since the old bolt (which held the old scissors together) is no longer there, I made a new bolt on the lathe. These parts I boiled in brandy vinegar, so that they are also protected from external influences.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: Needle scaler, hammer, pliers, propane torch, pin punch, rust remover, sand blasting cabinet, corundum blasting media, file, vise, sandpaper, clamp, tape, knife, Powder coating equipment, compressor, oven, cordless screwdriver, drill, Isopropanol, cold bluing, brush, lathe, lathe chisel, oil, Internal thread tap, external thread tap, hot plate, spirit vinegar, glass jar, tweezers

I love that while you made sure they were in perfect working order, you didn’t “over” restore them to look aesthetically new. They still look like they’ve been torn from a page of time, and that gives them some really nice sentimental value to know they’ve been around so long and still work.

Personally I like watching old things made like new or functional but with signs of age, even if there is no ‘financial gain’ or if it’s ‘cheaper & easier’ to go get a new item. Sometimes the journey is what’s important, & a lot of people seem to forget that nowadays.

I'm so, so happy that you left it rather pitted and worn down and just repaired it enough to be functional and still beautiful, in my own opinion. I'm tired of all the channels that breaks things down and build them back up artificially until you cant ever tell that it was ever flawed or restored in the first place. I know many people like that kind of thing, but I find it gorgeous when you can see the life something has gone through, the damage and wear and decay it has suffered, but you get to see how someone has loved it enough to bring it back from the brink of destruction while still letting it be its own unique item. I find the finished result perfect in it's own imperfect way.

Its funny how describing my complaint about this i would need 4 different versions of a word to convey my meaning. Sure i could of used other words if i was a writer writing a book but for a comment on the internet its best not to assume that everyone reading it is going to understand the synonyms for a restoration topic. Since I love collecting scissors and use very old scissors as I work with a lot of different types of mediums. Those scissors are “bookbinding” shears and that’s why they’re riveted and not screwed, and have the one blade flat. They cut heavy materials. I would have been surprised if you were able to restore them to working condition (able to cut leather and bookbinding board). As is, they’re a nice decorative piece! So much better than rusting and disintegrating, lost to time.

As impressed as I am that they even opened, let alone survive the rest of the restoration process, I feel like the only way to get them to a point that everyone would be happy with them is if you built up the metal to the point where there would be more new metal rather than the original metal. So that would kind of defeat the purpose. On a project as small scale as this, it was probably best just to melt the scissors down.

The finished product isn’t perfect, but considering what lengths you had to go to to get it to where it was that’s pretty impressive. Sometimes you just can’t restore it to a completely smooth surface sometimes you just have to make it look as good as you can and make it work again.

Hi, I was just wondering where you get all these rusty tools. I would love to do something like this myself so that is why I am asking. Love your videos, have a nice day!
@happydillpickle
@happydillpickle 2 роки тому
I'm as mad as the person who makes these videos and have a collection of all sorts of rusty tools. I have found them in all manner of places: skips/dumpsters, on walks in cities, towns, thrown behind bins, in the woods, at council rubbish tips. Sometimes people put stuff out on the pavement/sidewalk with a "help yourself" sign. Some things, people had cleared out their garages or sheds. Once you start actively looking and asking around you will end up with a boxful so big you will be able to restore to your heart's content! Good luck!
