I do not remember when NSF started to use the chapter title _"Work Continues on the OLM."_ Was it three years ago? When the sections of the orbital launch mount were first delivered to the site and the assembly work begun, nobody imagined that it would take *so much work* to get it in shape. Probably not even SpaceX themselves.

While there is some great camera work here, and many hours of filming and editing invested, the days are numbered for streams like this. The best views are all but completely obstructed and the highlights have now become focussed on concrete pouring and pipe fitting. NSF’s shift to live streaming of commentary could benefit from a good dose of credibility. With lightweights like EJ providing inane comic relief, it appears NSF is grasping to reinvent themselves for the day when the cameras are all but useless.

@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 Місяць тому
Since the idea of catching returning vehicles is going to be off to the side of the OLM it won't be a problem. So another OLM will be built with the tower to increase the launch cadence. Launches can alternate from each pad so one pad is refurbished after a launch to prepare for the next one.
@richfeist
@richfeist Місяць тому
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 I agree with you down the road. But you can't launch at all if you damage the tower or mount. The catch is never been done so why risk everything until it's proven reliable.
@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 Місяць тому
@@richfeist I don't know how Space X transitions from soft water landings at sea to catching the vehicles with Mechazilla, but is going happen somehow. The booster will be caught first and the ship later as that is harder. But I really don't concern myself with how its done to avoid a RUD on a landing attempt. Space X has repeatedly proven that it can accomplish what was previously thought impossible so I suspect they will figure this out too.

Are there any advantages to a hydraulic system over an electrical system? Just curious.
@cogoid
@cogoid Місяць тому
The system still begins with an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. It's just a different way to deliver the power from the motor to where the motion must occur. You can use gears and fancy screw mechanisms and electronics, or you can use a very straightforward hydraulic cylinder, hoses and control valves. For very high force linear actuators there are many companies which will sell you a custom made hydraulic cylinder. With the power electronics and custom electro-mechanical linear actuators it is not that simple. That's why so much construction and industrial machinery uses hydraulics.

@David-yo5ws Місяць тому
The water is fresh town supply water. Any contaminants would cause abrasion. Due to the low water table, there will only be a flame trench for the Starship tests at Massey, rather than the use of concrete with titanium wires in the mix. (I forget the name it's given)

i hope they can figure a better design for the OLM before too much more construction goes on, i hate to criticise but there has to be a more efficient way to deflect the flames away from vital kit than we have at present, and if they want to turn around ships every day someone has to come up with something better than "everything gets fried every launch". i want to go to mars, so i'm rooting for the enterprise.
@Vatsyayana87
@Vatsyayana87 Місяць тому
Well, to be honest the system has been working extremely well. There are two main evolutions that will be happening to increase the robustness though. First, once they gain confidence that the rocket wont just fall back on the pad right after lift off, which will be soon. They will likely stop doing the "Pad Avoidance Maneuver" which is why half of the pad gets directly blasted and roasted black each launch. Its inefficient and obviously rather rough on the setup compared to just going straight up. I expect that to not happen within the next few launches. Secondly is a small scale of what you are talking about, each launch they are making small upgrades to things that show they wont be able to handle a hundred of these events. So far the water system has worked incredibly well, and the design of it is really quite genius. Using the huge momentum of the water to capture and change the direction of the plumes energy outward while simultaneously absorbing much of the sound energy and converting heat into a state change from liquid to gaseous water. Overall yeah they are certainly using this as it was intended, as a test platform to learn how to build future ones much more robust.

I would think cryo consumable processing would be a higher priority since it will continue to be in such massive demand and only a few kinds. If they could just do O2, N2, Argon and CO2 which could be done from the atmosphere (So on site). It would save 10s of thousands of truck orders over the years. They tried this on small scale and gave up on it not too long ago. Im hoping they have been drawing up proper plan to do this large scale and a pipe network to the launch site for the N2 and O2. A side thought on this same ball park that would be amazing: I would love to see them using the same conversion system they plan to use on Mars to make propellant in situ. This way they can begin understanding and perfecting the process that will NEED to be extremely well understood before they even consider relying on it to work on another planet in order for Starships to come back to Earth.. If i remember right they only need the atmosphere to provide CO2, H2O and a relatively small amount of supplemental hydrogen in order to create the CH4 and O2 needed to fuel Starship. This will be a crucial part of colonizing Mars. Unless they end up deciding to leave every ship there..

If you would like, look up RGV Aerial Photography, they do fly over photos all the time.
