Honestly would have loved to see her react to the 'DC attack scene' in Olympus Has Fallen, since Antione Fuqua planned it all out with a friend/technical advisor who themselves were former Secret Service... It's quite interesting on the dvd extras, how when they sat around planning out every stage of the attack, their tech advisor repeatedly mentioned that during their time in SS protection details, part of their duties involved basically sitting around & thinking up the craziest gak imaginable as to how a group/foreign power might conceivably attempt to attack & take down the White House. So certain things in that film, such as the '15min window' are for the most part "accurate."

You'd be surprised. Back in my time in the military, I was working a security job temporarily and I got called in on one of my off days to stand guard while Donald Trump came to commission the new aircraft carrier. I got to meet a handful of secret service agents including one of the snipers on the scene. They were all pretty friendly, even the sniper I met. They mainly talked about us becoming agents after we were out of the military. Apparently, it's pretty common to recruit from the DOD.

Confirming the sniper thing - there was a presidential visit to my school and I didn't get a ticket, so I ended up chilling at my dorm window taking pics of the action. I noticed on the building across the way that there were people on it... I zoomed in closer on my camera and it was snipers. I started looking all around. On several balconies and tops of buildings there were other snipers stationed with binoculars. One of them was looking at ME. Then I looked down to the balcony below me. Snipers. Just a few yards away. I slowly backed away from the window and called my Mom. Then a few minutes later, I looked out the window again. The snipers were already facing me, looking up, guns ready. I waved and said hi. They said hi. It was really surreal and my first time realizing how much protection the President really had.

One of the most common misunderstandings about the secret service, and this is largely because of Hollywood, is that their number one job is NOT to be good with a gun or great at fighting. Yes, they train so they're good at those things. But their #1 job is THREAT DETECTION (or arguably to create those layers of security she talked about and control the environment). And I really liked that she talked about that. When the president is around people her job was to watch them and notice the person who is acting weird or who is looking down at their hands while they try to get a weapon into their hands or so on. So I really appreciated her talking about that aspect of things.

Occurs to me that IF someone made a movie accurate enough to get a 10/10 then Secret Service wouldn't let it get released.
@corruptangel6793
@corruptangel6793 2 роки тому
Not necessarily. There are prison or heist or so on types movies that (at least in the past) did get things accurate or found loopholes for the things being portrayed. In those cases, the groups being protrayed (whether that be a prison or bank or what have you) would modify their defences or tactics, often before the movie even hits theaters. I imagine the SS would do the same. Refusing to let the movie get released would just signal to the world that it has something they don't want getting shown. At which point everyone, especially those with bad intentions, will do everything they can to get ahold of whatever information was in that film.

I was a little disappointed that "The West Wing" got a low review; however, I understand the reasoning. I have to confess that Ron Butterfield was my favourite fictional Secret Service Agent of all time given the seriousness with which he played the role every time he appeared. I am glad to see that these highly trained people are watching over people in the public eye. Not an easy job especially when your protectee is not the compliant type you'd want to see. Grab the steering wheel indeed!! Shaking my head. Enjoyed your insights Agent Poumpouras. Be safe in all your do.

About training to take a bullet as a bodyguard: an important factor is to know that unless someone is aiming at you specifically the likelihood they will hit something vital and hence fatal is lowered. If you are already shielding their target the likelihood of them firing again is also lowered. It is still a risky job (as was clearly demonstrated by the agents protecting Reagan) but your deterrent is enough that the rate of fatal incidents is lower than that of a US combat soldier.

Also, I'd be SHOCKED if the agents aren't wearing ballistic plates. Back in the day there were only kevlar vests, which won't stop a rifle round, but ceramic plates have proliferated to the point that even many civilians have them. So the agent throwing themselves in front of the president would be just fine unless they took a round to the face

A friend of mine was a US Secret Service agent out of college. I asked him to share what he was allowed. He said he spent 8 hours in a black suit, on a super hot asphalt runway in Waco, TX guarding an empty Air Force One for 8 hours a day while President Bush 43 was at his ranch. He also would guard an empty stairwell at hotels while the president slept. He is now a local police chief.

Also, if it's really Rhodey in there, he would have The Avengers on the other side of his comms. Who needs a Sniper when Hawkeye is watching your back? The other thing about Rhodey, as well, is the fact that he's an Air Force Elite Combat Pilot. He would know how to fly in a way to protect the President and, more than likely, allow him to eliminate the threats. Tony? Yeah I might be a little worried because he doesn't have the experience and training that Rhodey has. And he's far cockier so, yeah, I could see maybe taking the Secret Service over Iron Man. His name is synonymous with treason. My point is, all of the agent's training, competence, confidence, and whatever else go out the window if they get drunk and accidentally give away trade secrets. Accidental treason is still treason. Congress felt it was bad enough to have the director of the secret service brought in for a hearing. Oh, and by the way, this comes from the secret service handbook. The Secret Service’s own training manuals specifically warned against adultery, because from a security standpoint, “the potential for undue influence or duress exists.” In other words, blackmail-the same threat that could have been used against the Cartagena crew.

Even heavily armored vehicles and stuff. However tbf, I don't think you could make a thermite incendiary that worked the way it does on screen, like that controlled downward burn. I'd imagine you'd get a bigger spread and more of a flaring effect that would present a serious danger to anyone near the car more than just something that melts straight downward like that, though. The whole scene delves kind of into sci-fi territory at that point. I really wish Mythbusters was still a thing cuz I'd love to see what happens if you used Thermite on the hood of a car like that.

This was one of the best ratings done by a professional. Felt like she actually spent time with the video/movie and not just saw a 5-second clip and start harping on what is wrong with everything. She breaks down each and everything. You can see the level of professionalism effusing out of her. She takes any task seriously and will do her research.

If they are going to comment on the movies and the way things are represented, I prefer they take the time to watch the entire film. So it takes a few more days to prepare before they shoot the video... Then their critiques can be accurate. But that's just my opinion.

Worth noting that the war machine suit is supposed to only be possible to be operated by rhodes. Since the president know that in that scene, it makes sense for him to think it cannot be anyone else.

UK Prime Ministers don't have the history of assassination attempts that US Presidents do. Spencer Percival was shot in 1812 on his way into Parliament, he's the only PM to be assassinated. There are two other attempts, one was the IRA bombing the Brighton Hotel trying to kill Thatcher in 1984. And an attempt on Sir Robert Peel in 1842 got his secretary instead.

Concerning DI's after the training day is over (that the CSM commented on last), I remember my Head Drill on our first night, when he had sat us down after the "Shark Attack," talking to us in a quiet time. He said something to the affect of: "We Drills are up before you, go to bed after you, and then somehow have to make time for our families. It's a hard life and we have the highest rate of divorce in the Army, so be prepared that sometimes we can be a bit 'cranky.'" 😉😬
