I truly think that Adam and Scarlett gave the performances of their careers in this film. It seems so under appreciated by casual audiences. I know the critical acclaim was phenomenal, but this film deserved so much more publicity and advertising than what it received.

Laura Dern didn't win that Academy Award for nothing. She was phenomenal in this movie. She shines despite Scarlett Johanssen and Adam Driver having such a strong roles.

2:54 This point is so important not only for Nicole, the character, but also Scarlett, the actress. She's tried for so many years to be seen as more than her looks that I can imagine it's why she never wears makeup or does her hair in this movie. I can't imagine how frustrating it was for her to be taken seriously. She was phenomenal in this movie.

this is an excellent breakdown. I have said multiple times that Marriage Story is the best movie I've ever seen that I will never watch again. It is one of the most realistic and heart wrenching movies ever made.

The costume design here is brilliant. The shoes alone are minimum $600. Anyone who knows the brand, Louboutin, would know they’re expensive and uncomfortable. And they’re not just black or nude, which would be more subtle; They’re scarlet red. The costume designer, and by proxy, Laura Dern’s character, wants us to notice the shoes. In any red carpet even, those shoes are high end and impractical. The fact that she describes her outfit as “shleppy” tells us all we need to know.

So I watch ALOT of video essays, and after watching all 3 of the video essays you have produced I would say you are one of the most brilliant video essayists I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Awesome content, can’t wait to see what else you create :)

I love your articulate and artistic focus on the female manipulation of another female. Female manipulation has had a higher success rate, strangely enough, on me than males. Male manipulation is way easier to pick up on, where female manipulation involves emotions and empathy. I’m fine now and love the males and females in my life now, tho 💗

I’m afraid to watch this movie after being married for 10 years and divorced recently. The pain is still raw. Revolutionary Road gave me a panic attack. Awesome essay tho.

This movie was a masterpiece, my wife and I cried a lot.

It was my top 3 films of that year, but only watched once because of all the emotional heaviness. I only felt that Nora was not entirely sincere, but your breakdown really dives deep in to the methods used. At that state, Nicole just truly wanted someone who took "her side". Even her family members appreciated Charlie and she felt powerless. Nora's manipulation was somewhat wrong, but it did gave Nicole the strengths to regain her power.

I cry every time at Adam reading that letter. Absolutely perfect scene. I love this movie too.

Wow. This is so insightful. As a Psychology student I can definitely see the social engineering and manipulation, symbolisms. Counseling is really messed up here. These directors are amazing! Haven’t really seen the movie but I’ll definitely watch it soon. Got loads of screenplay vocabs. Awesome review!

The way Nora is framed when talking to Nicole (very close and higher up than her) really drives the message home.

This breakdown of the manipulation is so spot on. I can't even count how many times I numbed my judgement or an intuition because of small acts of niceties, especially ones that hit things I desperately needed validation for.

This movie is one of those that seem to get better with each watch. The pain and the laughs while watching is always hard to handle bc it all feels so real! Great great video, love listening to ppl talk about things I love!

Like most I came from a broken home, suicide attempts, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and sometimes physical. I witnessed two grown adults destroy themselves, each other, their children and the family. It changed my brain forever. I watched this and felt that little child all over again. Utterly terrifying. This movie is a fabulous education tool, for how hurt people hurt people and create the same madness generations over, if self actuality is not present. As for the telling end result of exposure to adverse childhood experiences, all children within my family have chosen no children of their own. The cycle ends with us, end story.

A Marriage Story: a lesson in preventing denial and avoiding red flags way ahead of time....

It takes talent to analyze a film to such fine detail without it coming off as a disconnected surface-level perspective. You, sir, have earned yourself a subscriber.

The painting behind Nora is so interesting. It's of two people watching another visual art-piece and there is a 3rd chair that's empty. I wonder what it truly means but I think it's symbolic of how shrewd & manipulative lawyers like Nora show clients like Nicole an entirely different view of their own marriage modifying each & every detail & making the person feel like their marriage was a sham when really it just needed some work. What if Nicole and Charlie had continued their sessions with the marriage counselor, as shown in the beginning of the film? Maybe their marriage wouldn't reach the point of divorce if they had given it an honest and dedicated chance.

oh my gosh, I saw a completely different scene and character for Nora in this. It is so interesting to see everything she does as manipulation.

I had brought this movie up saying how great I thought it was to a group of aspiring actors/ theater students, and they all shot me down saying the movie was cliche and that it was to by the book. Having been a child who witnessed my parents relationship devolve strikingly similar to this movie, I stand by my opinion that this movie is so so good and breaks my heart every time

It concerns me that I didn't notice that Nora was intentionally manipulating Nicole, and I wonder how much my autism makes me vulnerable to being manipulated in every day life because I can't pick up on social cues that are apparently very obvious to NTs. Even re-watching this I was straining my brain to detect the dishonesty in Nora and I kept coming up with an internal error message because her behavior looked 'just like' someone I would assume to be sincere.

This was an excellent analysis and you actually helped me see what I liked about this movie. I remember when I watched it I was left with an odd feeling. It was really bittersweet and contradictory. I realize now that I absolutely love the director's work and that what feels off to me at least are some of the performances. For some reason, and although she does a terrific job of exploring shades, levels, moods, tones, etc., I feel that SJ approaches some really dense traits of her character only on surface. There are times in which there is a mismatch between text/script and how it impacts her character. I see something similar in AD's performance. There is a cleanliness to this couple that is at times difficult to see the weigh of theater frustration and the desire of "making it" without compromising your beliefs about theater, acting and the arts. However, I can see how the director's choices still conveyed the message. I kinda wanna watch it again now, honestly. Thank you! Keep doing these reviews!
