What I typically tell people is that my nationality is American, but my heritage is Scottish.

What does pass as haggis in the USA given that haggis proper is legally banned from being sold there? As a German myself I feel sorry for Americans since haggis is delicious and reminds me of a few German sausages which are very, very similar. We have haggis regularly in my household, sometimes Scottish style with neeps and tatties and other times with potatoes and kale as per my Friesian heritage.

I love your videos and Scotland. Often attend local and major Scots events here in USA. A big thrill was, long ago, meeting the commander of the Black Watch, Major General Wingate Gray. I gave him a WW1 bayonet that had the Crest of the regiment and initials of a subaltern. I wanted to return it to its home. This was in Madison Sq Garden in 1963. He gracious accepted it and reached down and gave me his own silver dirk. He looked like a taller huskier David Niven. Radiated dignity. If it is somebody local, wh6had grown up there and knows what is going on, they might be able to place people by skin colour as well as spoken accents.

With a last name like "Shaw" there's no denying irish history. My children carry the Gaelic spelling of our family name, which ironically was changed after my grandparents moved to America several generations ago. Now my children carry the name of not Johnson, but of MacIain. That way there is no denying where their ancestors are from.

I too, am an American, descended from Scottish people. In fact, my 9TH great-grandfather was Alexander Drummond.

As an American or Scottish, Irish, Danish, English, and pretty much every European nation other than France, I agree. The more we know about where our families came from and WHY they came to America (The Halls have been in north America since 1620...) the more we can see why people want to move from one place to another now.

I would say enjoy living in Scotland and once you become naturalised British call yourself Scottish but honestly is that important? Being Scottish English Irish Welsh is really where your heart feels right i think . I have family with direct European parents but they now think they are Australian. Dna wise most of us would be shocked . Are there any pure Scots from 5000yrs ago ? @Tigerman writer no mate, I know a lot of black people see themselves as Black British but race politics predates the Windrush generations and even Pax Britannica. It begins in the Carribbean at the outset of English/British colonialism when Irish indentured servants were sent there to work alongside African slaves. The Irish and Africans joined forces a few times and rebelled against the English colonialists. Obviously sharing the same oppressor will do that so the English had to come up with a way to divide them and thus race politics were born. Only after these rebellions do you start to see the idea of a ‘white’ race and its used purely to make oppressed white people think they’re better off being oppressed than uniting with their fellow oppressed man (who’s apparently stealing their job and all that racist tripe the media vomit out.) Emma Dabiri’s latest book touches on it so maybe give it a read if you think I’m chatting guff. Also, the reason a lot of black people see themselves as Black first and foremost is down to racist arseholes othering them not because they think being Black is better, or more important, than being British. If it wasn’t for Enoch Powell, NF, and the rest, these people would see themselves as British Jamaican etc. and that would be the end of. Instead, just as they did all those years ago in the Carribbean, the British establishment baited poor white people into thinking black people were their enemies (as opposes to them.) As a result, regardless of whether you were from the St Lucia or Nigeria you were always ‘Black’ first so black people stucked together and thus you get the ‘Black British’ which is borne out of the racist reception they got when they arrived (and still do for the most part.) Personally, I consider myself Lancashire Irish which isn’t even an ethnic identity last time I checked but it sums up me and my family’s past and present up quite well. Bruce might see himself as Scottish Ghanaian, or perhaps even Ghanaian Scottish. Notice how none of these identities indicate race though? You can presume if someone is Scottish Ghanaian they will probably be mixed race on account of Ghana being in West Africa but does the race even matter when it comes to nationality? Not at all, so why do we have to point it out? Who wants us to point it out? Those are the questions you have to ask yourself and, in my opinion, it is just an extension of the age old British imperial tactic of divide and conquer. Besides, what actual the fuck is British anyway? Technically speaking, the Britons are the Welsh but when someone says British they mean English, don’t they? But they don’t mean a Geordie, or a Scouser, or even a Midlander. When they say British they’re talking about the people they see on TV who, more often than not, comes from the Home Counties and had what’s known as an elite upbringing. Which is to say boarding schools and a ticket to Oxbridge. ‘British’ is a fantasy concocted by colonialists and it’s a dying identity. By the end of the decade Scottish and Welsh people won’t think of themselves as British, they barely do now. Nobody wants to be tarnished with the toxic British exceptionalist attitude anymore.

@Tigerman writer long story short, race politics is not ‘identity politics’ and began in the 1600s as a result of colonialism. If black people see themselves as black first and foremost it is because of racists not allowing them to simply be ‘British’ or ‘American’ or whatever. I don’t see myself as ‘white’ anything, personally, as I’ve got very little in common with most Europeans.

I was working in west Texas circa 20 yrs back two guys walked out into the parking area as I was getting into my car. I stopped dead in my tracks as I heard them talk, “Madainn mhath a bheil thu a ’bruidhinn Gàidhlig”? Seadh cò às a tha thu?,came the reply. Gàidhealtachd na h-Alba, cò às a tha thu? Nova Scotia. It ended up with me talking to one of their fathers that was from my village and knew my family!!

@@fearnpol4938 there were actually more Gaelic speakers in Nona scotia last century than there were in Scotland. My grandparents’ born in Nova Scotia in late 1800s and early 1900s spoke only Gaelic until they went to school. Where they’d be punished for speaking Gaelic I. Earshot of English teachers.

I've heard this from my family (Scots from Ayrshire who moved to Nova Scotia before heading to Missouri in the late 1890s). Thats awesome the language is surviving even outside Scotland

I've lived in Scotland for most of 23 years, I love Scotland and know a great deal about Scottish history and culture, but strictly to some I am not a Scot, as I wasn't born here and have an English-type accent. Stuff-em I say, especially those dour and grumpy, mainly urban Scots, I wouldn't want to relate to them anyway. I prefer stomping around the beautiful Highlands and Borders, visiting castles, country estates, revelling in the history, wildlife and landscape.
