Michael Pollan joins us at Penguin to answer some Big Questions on the power of caffeine, the war on drugs, and curing addiction with psychedelics. Order your copy of 'This Is Your Mind on Plants' here: amzn.to/3TZ0lCu
Of all the many things humans rely on plants for, surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate, calm, or completely alter the qualities of our mental experience. In This Is Your Mind On Plants, Michael Pollan explores three very different drugs - opium, caffeine and mescaline - and throws the fundamental strangeness of our thinking about them into sharp relief. Exploring and participating in the cultures that have grown up around these drugs, while consuming (or in the case of caffeine, trying not to consume) them, Pollan reckons with the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants, and the equally powerful taboos.
In a unique blend of history, science, memoir and reportage, Pollan shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively. In doing so, he proves that there is much more to say about these plants than simply debating their regulation, for when we take them into our bodies and let them change our minds, we are engaging with nature in one of the most profound ways we can. This ground-breaking and singular book holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations, the operations of our minds and our entanglement with the natural world.

For anyone having a bad trip I have three tips. 1. Sit in a lotus position 2. Try to sing. 3. If you're afraid think of something Holy. Angels,Jesus, Gaia.

6:50 - Wish my dad would listen to that, he is one of those guys who says he can have an espresso and go to sleep, I've told him that it might be true but he is not getting real quality, deep sleep. Unfortunately not only he has never listened to me, he is extremely biased against psychedelics so I can't refer this video to him. This is great, thanks for sharing, Mike Pollan's interesting insight about the responsible, medically supervised therapeutic use of psychedelics.

If a psycadelic drug is not habit forming than a psycitrist giving a single dose of said substance under controled conditions to help somone with severe issues should be legal if its more likely to help than to harm

Yes, but government of any country would not be happy. Because when you are coming back, you have plenty of questions about every aspect of your life and most likely you'll be striving to change yours into a better one. Mush love

I know somebody who regularly takes magic mushrooms. She looks a mess, talks a lot of nonsense, slurs her words, and her brain and reactions are slow. But she thinks she's found the key to the universe, and everybody should take them. Her life is not enviable. Sometimes we think one thing, but the actual reality is different.
@jonstewart464
@jonstewart464 Рік тому
@@phily8093 The cause of her problems, if you report them accurately, are extremely unlikely to be the mushrooms. She may have problems, she may take mushrooms, but you need good reasons before you can decide whether one caused the other. There's a whole scientific literature out there on psychedelics, the results are in: they're safe.
@phily8093
@phily8093 Рік тому
@@jonstewart464 I did report them accurately. I know her. I see what she does and how they affect her. You don't. Nothing is "safe". Life is not "safe". People abuse things, and they get abused back. You only know what you've seen, read and want to believe. I could find many articles to the contrary.
@jonstewart464
@jonstewart464 Рік тому
@@phily8093 Scientific knowledge is not subjective. There is a systematic method for gathering and evaluating evidence. In your single case, you need understand what else is going on with this lady and the timecourse of her symptoms. Does she drink? Other medications? General and mental health history? Your conclusion is at odds with the systematic clinical evidence. Try to find some peer reviewed research showing neurological damage caused by psilocybin and if you can, see how it stacks up against the rest of the literature.

Disgusting all this is tested on animals who have no say in the matter. What does it have to do with humans. Humans interventions and drugs should be tested on humans. If not 'ethical' for humans thwn its not ethical to be done on animals either!!!
@28Pluto

Testing psychedelics on animals is nothing compared to all the man-made products tested on them. Have you ever used soap, shampoo, medicine, diapers, condoms, toilet paper??? Guess what? All tested on animals, and they caused a LOT more suffering than psychedelics.
