Taking a moment to look ahead at the music makes such a huge difference too. Even for simple things like Time signatures, key signatures, accidentals, repeats... When I first had to sight read for jury, I used to get so nervous, I would just play, not even knowing my key!!! Stop. Breathe. Look ahead & you'll have less surprises :)

Oh yes it helps so much! I totally did that too when sight reading for choir...sightread with the same sharps/ flats as the piece before...not good 😂 looking ahead, and taking a moment to look over the piece before starting to play is so important!

I don't know how I missed such an awesome video from you, Angelika! These tips are really good - I watched it to make sure that I'm doing everything right. I love sight reading and noticed it gets easier and easier now to learn new material. As you mentioned, I'm trying not to look at the keys as much - but when I rewatch my performance videos, I realise that I still have occasional glances even when I'm unaware of those!

Thank you Lena! I love sight reading as well! It’s fun to go through a lot of music and hear how beautiful different songs can be. With looking down at the hands, I find that certain songs it is easy not to look down at the hands while other songs that move more around the piano, especially constant big jumps, can be very difficult to not look down. I mainly use this rule for sight reading, not necessarily everything.

Is there a list of “eye movement” tips? My present weakness. Tips such as: 1. Read bottom up ( bass clef to treble). 2.. 3… ? Thanks

Hi Art, that is such an interesting question, and something I have honestly not thought about. My initial thought is that if you are sight reading on the spot, reading bottom up may take too long. If you are on your own, you can always take a much slower tempo so that this works. When I sightread, I try to see the bigger picture, reading the shapes of chords and shapes of lines. So I guess I’m looking at the full measure at once. Sight reading is a skill that takes a lot of practice and time.
