I EAS'ed from the Marines 8 years in at the height of my middle management career as a Sergeant. I remember many times having fond memories of the days when I had so much less responsibility years before, and I also thought about how much easier Staff Sergeant and higher had it easier because at that rank and higher you leave the platoon management (like up in the business every minute of the day management) and only need to pop in once in a while to check on things. I was due for promotion but I denied myself that before I had made this realization deciding I had had enough of the upper ranks and didn't want to see myself become one of them.

You cannot lead through negativity. This may appear to be valid in the short term but other issues will occur and productivity will drop. People want to feel valued and part of what's going on in their workplace. Leading through fear may appear to be effective to the the instigator but in the long term people will only work to the bare minimum and not be invested in the workplace.

There is also the issue of the vacuum at the top = we've all worked with leaders who were unqualified for their roles and had simply moved through the company getting promoted but never quite achieved the skills of leadership. It drives out the qualified and talented middle management layer. In my experience its the top leadership failing has made most of my colleagues leave their otherwise great jobs!

I think the answer is simpler: we aren't productive and waste time because we don't have a good "connection" with our goals. We just do many things without REALLY thinking about them. WHAT WE NEED is to spend some time with ourselves everyday planning the next day. Best way is to have a walk ALONE thinking about things to do tomorrow. Visualize.. not write and make notes, etc. Just a broad visualisation of who you are and what you'll do tomorrow. Make that connection. Countless of my students have found this working better than different MODELS and STEPS and other complicated ways.. JUST have a walk and visualise. You'll also move a bit that will release the right hormones for you to have a positive connection with the next day's purpose!! Best of luck guys!!

Thats because they don't know any better either, because if they did then the opportunity/risk would be sufficiently evaluated to be considered an option. Its the willingness to see things through that counts even if done hypothetically, and it trumps over any applicable forms or methods of disregard.

In my previous where 3 managers left one by one due to pressure. So I managed the team, and my boss brought in a guy from outside who was a puppet. He would not ever side with team and make us over work after our office hours endlessly. He was a pure "manager" he simply managed and never lead

So what's the solution of point 1
@robertdickson2083
@robertdickson2083 Рік тому
People don't want to be managed, they want to be lead. Who ever heard of a world manager - world leader yes. church leader, scout leader, municipal leader. They lead they don't manage. If you want to manage somebody - manage yourself. When you learn to do that well, you will be ready to stop managing and start leading. Leaders lead with aim and purpose - others follow through self interest. The carrot always wins over the stick - ask your horse. Get it thirsty and it will even find it's own water - your horse will agree with that too. When goals are valuable and there is learning and growth - -everyone cooperates aspiring to manage themselves. So the leader can go on leading. Written under the heading HORSE SENSE by myself Bob Dickson in a career management and personal leadership business for several years.

“If you’re really good at it, you eventually get promoted”. I have always had trouble with this particular myth that Simon propagates. I have worked in the tech industry for 30 years at 7 companies in health care, banking, legal administration, and real estate, and all of them only hire managers from outside the org. I have heard of companies that will promote business analysts and developers to management roles, but very few companies have the discipline and leadership to actually groom and promote these roles from within.
@ProductivityACE
@ProductivityACE Рік тому
I'd have to agree with that, at least in part. For sure it seems like in big corporates that someone's ability doesn't play that much of a factor in whether they get promoted or not. Or at least not as much of a factor as it should...

Maybe this is in a different presentation, but just a little bit of history for Mr Sinek. He's slightly off when he said that handwashing came in because of Dr Holmes. The reality is that a medical professional called Ignaz Semmelweizz came up with the idea that doctors needed to wash hands after post-mortems, and before they conducted deliveries. It was called puerperal sepsis. He was hounded out for that reason, till he died in a mental asylum. It took 300 years for that concept to even come to it's right. As an Indian, I'll just state the right way to do caesarian deliveries, was stated and written by Sushruta, an ayurvedic physician, from times three centuries BCE. The western world took over 100 years from the 19th century, to get it right. 😄
