That same year Schumacher was disqualified from British Grand Prix, along with a 2 race suspension for ignoring a Black flag. In spite of no points in 4 races, he still just manged to win his first championship. Not unlike Max & Red Bull's first championship in final race of 2021, it was also highly controversial.

'THE IDEA' to make sprints exciting - replace them with a spec car race, all drivers in the same car (an F1 version of F2). Expensive yes BUT super interesting races where we find out who is really the best driver and qualifying in different cars would obviously be make it not a replication of normal quali. And if done every race points could form the true drivers championship. Sky throw that idea out there!

Sprint Races should be solely for the reserved drivers and f2 drivers that are affiliated with F1 teams and their academies. If we have 4-5 sprint races each year and they say that a rookie takes 2-3 years to fully develop a good amount of experience as an F1 driver, then the possibility of making it a separate championship to highlight the youth coming into the sport and also probable replacements for better silly seasons then... I don't see how that can be an issue for all parties involved.

It is *never* a weekend format issue. Do you even know what rules and regulations are? The safety margin for the thickness of the plank is built in. The rules are clear that the onus is on the team/drivers to not wear the plank down. Cars have to have a minimal ride height. Pushing cars too low is part of what let to the development of the unsafe cars that got Ratzenberger and Senna killed. It's not there to be obtuse or anything. The plank is there as a simple, low-tech indication/record of all the times the cars failed to maintain the regulated ride height. Stewards visually examine if any cars are likely to have failed to obey the regulations and they measure those. Think for a few seconds, think how much regulations there are and how much time is need to check and double-check everything.
@JJAdams86
@JJAdams86 6 місяців тому
And you don’t think that there’s a coincidence between it being an extremely bumpy track and a sprint weekend where the teams run an extra 25% of laps, have limited setup time and can’t change the setup of the car after Friday? You don’t think that this might have caught some of the teams out considering the last time anyone was DQ was nearly 30 years ago, but on Sunday TWO cars were disqualified and were 50% of the cars tested? You don’t think it *might* be a format issue? Granted, the teams are ultimately liable, but I’d lean more to the side of the teams having to make impossible predictions with incredibly limited data, and ultimately some not getting it righ, rather than outright flagrantly breaking the rules.

Yes, if 2 out of 4 fell foul of the rule then surely they should have checked all. Problem there is, half the field may have been disqualified which would have made the whole thing a farce. A few nasty bumps could make a big dent in the wear rate is my guess. I also guess the teams should try & allow for this but with such fine margins it's a gamble.
@FrancisFjordCupola
@FrancisFjordCupola 6 місяців тому
No, dude. Sigh. Take the whole pile of F1 regulations for the cars (the formula where formula one comes from). How much time do you need to read it all? How many time do you need to check if a single car follows them all? For sure. How many time do you need to eliminate your false positives. What the stewards do with the planks is to visibly inspect them first. The plank is there to visually indicate whether or not a car was in breach of regulations (cheating on low ride height). Some races there is so little wear on all planks none of them are even measured. Why measure when you can see it's in order? So the stewards pick several to perform the exact measurements on if they do not look robust. After every race the stewards report on which tests were performed on which cars. Pérez's car had its whole aerodynamics package measured, for example. You can look all that stuff up. Instead of repeat what pundits blather on about. The whole shtick of the other cars whataboutism is to be able to claim that Hamilton was not the only one cheating next to Leclerc. Hamilton cheated, Hamilton got caught. It's that easy. And just because Leclerc cheated too, does not make Hamilton any less of a cheater. This also comes after Hamilton ramming out his teammate in the previous GP, and things like knocking Piastri out at Monza. Hamilton is not a clean driver.

Sprint weekends are the same for all teams, some get it right others don’t, there are even differences in the same team. Did Mercedes with their new floor try to gain too much, miscalculated the effect of weight of fuel etc. or was it a calculated risk to gain points and got caught out. Why the difference in performance between Hamilton and Russell?. As for 2024, I don’t believe Red Bull are sitting on their hands believing they have a good car now for next season. Ferrari have lost the plot, and Mercedes aren’t far off. Maclaren are doing good, but obviously some tracks are better than others for them.
@LimeyTX
@LimeyTX 6 місяців тому
Finally someone said something intelligent about “Sprints”. These sprint races are a total joke. What fans would like to see is all the F1 drivers competing in spec cars so the car difference is eliminated. It shouldn’t be for points, at least not F1 points. And it would save potential costly damage to F1 cars which matters in a cost cap world. The current format is a joke with Saturdays being for the kids to watch with serious F1 fans watching on Sunday. Back when I started watching F1 drivers would race in multiple races on race day. For example Jimmy Clark would race in the Lotus Cortina and the Lotus Elan before winning the F1 race 😀 Watching Jimmy hold off Jack Brabham in the Ford Galaxy for a few laps in the Lotus Cortina at Brands Hatch was really good fun.

All reactions here claiming the DSQ’s were unfair because they only checked 4 cars, have no clue about F1? First of all, teams were all in agree with the rules knowing there are random checks. Second, checking all cars would inmensely increase costs and time. Funny that only brits and Lewis fans are complaining

It is my understanding that the plank was introduced to control ride height for safety reasons and not to control performance. The fear twenty five years ago when ground effect first started that a broken skirt in those days or bottoming out could result in loss of down force and the car could go straight off the track at high speed and endanger the driver. In 2022 Mercedes was also relative quick in Austin and Brazil (Russel even won that one). So, it might be a bit dangerous to think their package is now working just because they were able to keep up with Verstappen that was driving an sub-optimal car. Mercedes is on a good track, but I'm not sure if they are there yet already. Because Mercedes was running the car too low, it is possible that the performance gain and even the handling was a result of that... I don't like sprint races, but mostly because it is very hard to follow it from the US. Were 6 hours earlier than central Europe, so a sprint qualification around noon in Europe, means a night qualification for me. This was the first Friday qualification that I was able to see live, the previous ones were always in the early noon part when I'm still working. F1 is very conflicting at times, they say they want more American viewers, yet do almost anything to make it impossible for Americans to watch it...

@brrrake
@brrrake 6 місяців тому
Ride height is for performance. We've had the porpoising which is the car abruptly losing downforce (and then regaining it). And last year we even had a techincal directive which was about the cars being too low (and smashing into the ground) - that was a safety issue to avoid driver's backs being injured. But the skid wear was not enough to police that (also some of that was due to the rear suspension being limited, not just grounding).
@brrrake

The skid blocks are there to limit ride height and ground proximity, which in turn is a performance limiter. I didn't say anything about their tragic and unfortunate deaths. Have a good day.

Merc have always been naff with strat, they never seem to make the decisions quickly enough and always want to hold off pitting whereas RB are decisive and if they see a glimmer of opportunity they pit. How many times should Merc have pitted under SC and then they've been scuppered by staying out. Really need someone in there that goes, go for it. Pit now! Especially against the RB they need to be right on the attack with strat not waiting to see what the competition does. Also with two cars being illegal, the other Merc and the other Ferrari at least should have been checked too surely? Or more so the whole grid.
