They try to play to the fear of the unknown to much, and while that is an important part of storytelling, so many things rely on it to be scary, and if the only scary thing about your killer is that we don’t know what it is, it kind of lessons the impact.

What if there's more than one? Like person number 2 is the getaway driver, or just a lookout. Could be just as risky leaving the house as staying inside. Also have to consider the area you live in.
