Time signatures with a thirteen on top certainly live up to the name “odd” time signature. In this video we’ll take a look at some songs in 13/8, 13/4 and even the much rarer 13/16 time.
And, an extra special thanks goes to Douglas Lind, Vidad Flowers, Ivan Pang, Waylon Fairbanks, Jon Dye, Austin Russell, Christopher Ryan, Toot & Paul Peijzel, the channel’s Patreon saints! 😇

Honestly, 13/16 is a really natural feeling time signature to me, actually. It might be the proximity to 12/16, but especially in the 3-3-3-4 clave, it is a very smooth time signature to my ear.

@@DavidBennettPiano Thanks for your channel, David. I would suggest (and maybe someone else has) that the Weapons Factory has 6 beats in it, but the 3rd beat is 1.5 times as long as the other 5. 6/8 has two beats in it, right? And they're 1.5 times as long as the beats in 3/4 - assuming eighth notes are constant. 7/8 often has 3 beats - maybe 2 + 2 + 3 (i.e. a long 3rd beat - common in certain Balkan music), or 3 + 2 + 2 (i.e. a long 1st beat - super common in lots of Greek music). In that part of the world 9/8 can be an irregular meter, 2 + 2 + 2 + 3, very much 4 beats, just one of them longer than the others. And BTW, I prefer irregular to odd. Irregular more descriptive, odd has other connotations. lionandtheeagle.bandcamp.com/track/postupano-and-eleno-mome-andy-busuttil-and-philip-griffin Here's a Macedonian tune in 13/8 (2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 2) segued with another Macedonian tune in 7/8 (2 + 2 + 3)

It's probably because they are not actually rhythmically coherent. Think of it like the art people make that's just a few lines and dots and people say yep looks like art to me. It may seem like music but in reality it's just a made up signature that doesn't follow the rules of math which is what makes music rhythmic in the first place. It feels like playing along with someone who doesn't count and misses a beat so you gotta compensate and just skip one yourself

Antarctic Reinforcement by DM Dokuro off the Calamity Mod soundtrack for Terraria is the first example of a song in 13/8 I think of. The song primarily has this chopped up breakbeat which helps disorient your sense of time and you seem to get lost in the rhythm of the song. Tam Lin by Fairport Convention, and (much of) Robbery, Assault & Battery by Genesis are in 13… Although whether it’s 13/4 or 13/8, I can’t recall. Thanks for making these time signature videos! Very enjoyable.

Robbery, Assault & Battery is the first (and the craziest) thing that comes to my mind in 13. That absurd solo right in the middle of a fairly simple joyful song is pretty weird even for my Genesis fetish.

Tam Lin is mainly in 3/4; in the verses, every fourth bar has an extra beat. So one could say that the verses vary between 6/8 and 7/8, but not 13. The instrumental passages are firmly in 3/4.

I love how Fairport played with time, at the beginning they almost sound always the same but then you begin to notice how much they put in the rhythmic section doing apparently very simple things that are actually very particular

Oh, very good video. Two Genesis songs (and a cat!). Well done. I'd be interested if you could look into Down and Out from their album And Then There Were Three. Unusual drum pattern, so I wonder what time signature that is.

Down And Out uses one bar of 4/4 and one bar of 6/4, of course the chorus is in 4/4. It sounds more complicated than it actually is, thanks to the complex and whacky drum beat that Phil plays there. And Tony as usual plays a billion different chords over that d-pedaltone, which doesn't make it sound any easier. Add Mike's guitar riff there and you have some pretty proggy stuff.

I've always counted the verse in Down & Out in 5/4, chorus 4/4

@patepulkkinenvtec2403 Рік тому

10:26 On the topic of alternating time signatures, Mastodon's "Sickle and Peace" verse section has three 7/8 measures followed by an 8/8 measure, which finally feels "complete". Then, they stop with the 8/8s before changing to 6/8 for the chorus. Really interesting use of this concept.

Apart from the middle section of 'Starless' by King Crimson (as mentioned previously), there are a few more gems from the British progressive rock music of the mid-70s (I know, before you were born): 'Childlike faith in childhood's end' by Van der Graaf Generator, and 'Siberian Khatru' by Yes.

One of my favorite examples is Heat Distraction by Women features an opening riff in 13/8, verses in 5/4, a bridge in 4/4, and then goes back to 13/8. I think it really leans into the uncanniness of the odd meter by starting odd, getting progressively less odd, and then coming back to it

The song that comes to mind for me is From the Flame by Leprous, which has verses in 13/8 with a pulse that almost feels like 8/8 + 5/8, and a second verse that feels like it's in a polymeter with the snare being on every 8th beat. It's a weird song but it works in its execution.

This is fantastic! Thank you! I nominate two songs to add to your 13/8 list: The tag of Skimbleshanks from the musical Cats (forgive me since it’s Cats LOL) - 3 3 3 2 2 On Snarky Puppy’s latest album, Honiara is in 13/8, but largely 7+6 (a la the subdivisions you talked about at the end of the video)

Damn I was too late. The third track in my next album (in development), called Fight or Flight, is also in 13/8. I used to claim it as "the world's first song entirely in 13/16 time," but I realized that it wasn't fast enough for that. Out of all the songs in said upcoming album, it is by far the most experimental, with the aforementioned odd time signature and a sort of tacky drum solo. It could possibly be better notated as two bars of 4/8 followed by a bar of 5/8, though. It's one of the more forgettable songs in that album, but for such a weird time signature, I would say I did a good job! Also, cool video.

My favourite song in 13-time is Pete Shelley's "I Generate a Feeling", off the "Homosapien" album, but it's probably better described as alternating bars in 6/4 and 7/4. Much of Tori Amos's "Spark" also has 13 beats. The sax break from "Starless" by King Crimson and the first part of "The Man With 100 Cells" by Stereolab are also in 13/8.

Another song that is technically in 13/4 is the opening number from the Broadway show “13.” It’s about a bunch of 13 year olds in Indiana but the opening number’s chorus is literally a 13 beat phrase repeated over and over again. One of my favorite music Easter eggs.
