SpaceX FINAL Launch Preparations For Starship IFT 4!
SpaceX is preparing for the fourth integrated test flight of its Starship rocket. The Starship program is moving forward with plans to fly Ship 29 and Booster 11 on IFT-4, possibly in May, following the historic IFT-3 launch in March. Future iterations of the vehicle are also beginning to take shape. And so, in today’s episode, let’s find out what are the recent updates in Starbase.

Both vehicles are now being worked on at the Starbase production sector in anticipation of the fourth flight of Starship itself, which is scheduled to occur after the ship and booster underwent successful static test firing campaigns.
In order to ensure that Ship 29's systems and engines were fit for flight, the ship briefly fired all six of its engines on March 25 during a static fire test at the suborbital launch pad B.
Two days later, probably to test the procedure for firing an engine in orbit during IFT-4, a single-engine Raptor was fired from Ship 29's header tanks. After this fire was completed on March 29, Ship 29 went back to the Starbase construction facility to be ready for takeoff.
On April 3, booster 11 was moved to the orbital launch pad, where it was raised overnight onto the orbital launch mount (OLM). Booster 11 was hauled back to the production site two days after it completed a successful 33-engine static test firing on April 5. While both vehicles are getting readied for takeoff, there is still work to be done before they can return to the launch pad.
As of right now, the hot staging ring for Booster 11 is still not installed on the vehicle, and many of the tiles on Ship 29 have been removed following its rollback. Since the tiles in some places of the ship must be put on, adhesive patches have been seen in those regions.
It is possible to mechanically join tiles to other parts of the ship. Large portions of Ship 29 remained tile-free as of mid-April. On the other hand, fresh nose tiles have been installed, and preparations are underway for a deployment in a few weeks.
According to a statement made by Elon Musk on the social media platform X (previously Twitter), the primary objective of IFT-4 was to get Ship 29 back into the atmosphere and keep all of its systems operating past the point of maximum heating. More work on the heat shield is being done by SpaceX in an effort to offer Ship 29 the best chance of entering the atmosphere undamaged.
IFT-4 is designed to closely resemble IFT-3's mission, including a reentry over the Indian Ocean and a comparable flight path. An in-space restart of a Raptor engine was one of the primary objectives of IFT-3 that was not accomplished, so keep an eye out for that throughout this mission. How well the booster returns to a location in the Gulf of Mexico close to the launch site is another thing to keep an eye on. Booster 10 on IFT-3 descended almost all of the way before experiencing control problems in the last seconds of the mission.
