How similar are the French and Spanish language? We got two native speakers, one from France and one from Spain, to see how similar their languages are. Spanish vs French - it's on!
Did you know that French and Spanish are said to have lexical similarity of 75 percent? This is mainly due to their latin origins, but they are very different in sound because standard French has a Celtic substrat and a Germanic superstrat.
Do you know any other Spanish French similarities?

Latin origins of French and Spanish words: panis = bread lac (lactem in the accusative) = milk * framboise / frambuesa = of Germanic, not Latin, origin camba = of Vulgar Latin origin, meaning 'leg' vinum = wine * patate / patata = of Haitian origin, potatoes were only introduced into Europe in the 16th C papa = papa i.e. father pullus = chicken * television = modern word, from Greek 'tel-' (far) and Latin 'visionem' (act of seeing) frigidus (adj.) = cold dormire = to sleep pons (pontis in the accusative) = bridge lentus (adj.) = slow armor = love arbor = tree * gant / guante = of Germanic, not Latin, origin

If you speak Spanish, it is easier to understand French written than spoken. They barely pronounce that final consonant, and that is why so many words sound alike in French.

Excuse me but in my opinion, their mother Latin language is the prettier one but Spanish is the most dynamic out of Romance languages even surpassing Italian. Italian may have lots of Latin words but it was also influenced by non-Latin languages like Oscan and Umbrian. Both Vocabulary and Syntax and even pronounciation, well, Spanish got all that category that's why it is the closest to Latin. French is the least due to the pronounciation contrasting to Latin. Even the pronounciation of letter S is missing in French and the letter R in Latin is pronounced alike the Spanish "R" and "R" in French is sort of soft sound. Sardinian the theoretically closest to Latin is very closed to Italian and not even sounds like Spanish. Hearing Spanish is like hearing its lost mother Latin. #RespectMyComment

Been learning both languages on Duolingo. Spanish comes off easier if one already knows some French. But I'd say, Spanish is closer to Portuguese than French. Although many words feel like an extension/limitations of the other. French - etudient , vie, musique Spanish - estudiante , vida, música Interestingly, some words remain common like apprendre (French) and aprender (Spanish) - to learn Thank you.

The difficulties that french language presents to spanish native speakers is not exactly pronunciation but the writing systems (many vowels and consonants don't keep correspondence with their sound in the alphabet). Besides other letters are not used with the intention to be pronounced but as a tag to remind something)

Truly depends on where you live, what is your mother tongue, and which countries you want to visit. If you want to visit North America (Québec or Canada), Europe, or Africa, you should learn French (unless you especially want to go to Spain or Equatorial Guinea). If you are more interested in Central or South America, then it should be Spanish of course (except if you're especially interested in Haïti or the French islands in the Caribbean). I'm Québécois so obviously I'd be biaised if I said you absolutely should learn French first :P

If you already speak English, start with french cuz 50% of English words come from French. Otherwise start with Spanish it's easier, all the letters are pronounced and there are less tenses.
