Gaelic with Jason

Talking about specific times of day in Gaelic is pretty straightforward but there's a little trick to talking about nights...
Thanks for watching! Take care.

@@GaelicwithJason Hi Jason, I wanted to add that I teach Human Rights to English speaking students, but I have managed to use some Gaelic anyway. I have numbered presentation groups from Aon to Coig, used some greetings and one class is on language and history and includes some Gaelic.

makes sense about the oidhche Luain. Now I am questioning every other language I know that has the word day embedded in the week day names (French, Italian, Catalan - but not Spanish or Russian) We say TuesDAY night without realising what a non sequitur it really is. Tuesnight anyone?? tapadh leibh a thidseir

I totally agree with you that Gaelic is gorgeous 💛! Thank you so much for the repeated clear pronunciation of the words. It takes me a while to get my tongue around many of them! I find it particularly helpful when you face the camera whilst speaking so I can "see" the pronunciation, too. 🙏💫

As far as I can find out, feasgar isn't a loan-word, but it's related to the Latin vesper = evening.
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason 2 роки тому
Ah, that makes sense. Madainn is too (matins). 🙂From what I remember, the idea of dividing a day into specific times was to support the monastic daily schedule. In a sense, it was an imported concept, which gives us 'madainn' and ' feasgar' . Fascinating really.

Hi Andrew, interesting. In south Germany the word Vesper means = eating bread, slice of sausage, cheese... in the late afternoon/evening. Nice story: My little son didn' t know the word vesper, so he asked for a Spätfrühstück (late breakfast) being hungry in the evening.

Interesting. Why doesn’t “madainn” lenite the days of the week, like “oidhche”? ...and in that case, drop “di-“, too?

Hi Jason, if a Scot wakes up in the middle of the night and wonders which day is today he wonders about the night? Just asking ;-)

This could be confused with the month of March. How do you differentiate between a March night and a Tuesday night?
